There's a constant refrain in stories like this, "How can anyone do such awful things, especially to children?" Well, I think I have an answer, but you're likely not gonna like it.
These people, who hurt kids, who do their appalling things, do they make you angry? Do you want to visit harm upon them, even if you never actually would if you could, but you have that desire, in your anger? Consider that feeling, the complete lack of empathy, the self-justifications for it ("They deserve it! It's karma!" "At least I'm an adult trying to harm someone who could defend themselves!" "No child deserves to suffer that!" Etc etc), the desire to hurt, the satisfaction that is mirrored with the idea of it, and you'll have your answer, in a dirty water and toxic waste are both liquids sense. The core feeling is the same, it's just a matter of direction and degrees. In you, it only arises when exposed to such horrors. In them? It arises from much more selfish and banal things.
That's, sadly, I suspect, the only real answer that anyone could even begin to understand. The rest is basically trying to comprehend stuff that for one reason or another, we have no context for and damn well wouldn't want to begin with, methinks.

by these stories, CPS sounds utterly worthless. Even the ones where they ended up helping the kids, it was way later than they should have. I really hope these are outliers, but deep down I know the system is utterly fucked and children are suffering all over the country--heck, the world. Damn I wish there was more I could do.
