      My car keeps saying low-voltage and going into limp mode I did a ton of research and I went to the junkyard and pulled a TIPM from another Chrysler 200 and I put it in and connected the ground battery and the car alarm started going off and the wipers and everything so I immediately shut it off and I am doing what you said. I’m in the parking lot though, so I don’t know if I can leave it for hours.

      @@Bonbonbon739 Do the part # of the TIPM you pulled out of your vehicle and the one that you got from the junkyard match? If so, then I would recommend trying a soft reset first. If not, then this could be the cause of your issues with the vehicle after installing the replacement TIPM.

    Touching the positive and negative cables together to do what now? To do what exactly? Discharge capacitors... That's what your saying. Lemme think this over a second... nope it didn't take that long. I recommend not doing that. Just disconnect the battery and leave it set... turn on the headlamps and turn the ignition switch to the on position with the battery disconnected. A capacitor is the same as a positive- negative flow system, touching the cables together to "Discharge capacitors" is the same thought of touching 12 volt battery cables together with a charged battery hooked up on the other end... it can, or may, destroy the capacitors much like it might fry the 12 battery.. Turning the ignition switch on, with the battery removed from the system, and operating most of your electronics with the battery disconnected, drains the capacitors correctly without taking the chance to short out capacitors.... Before you put the battery back to hot, make sure everything you turned on... is turned off...then hook the battery back up... It wont take 2 hours to discharge capacitors doing it this way. It'll take less than 5 minuets. Just sayin'....

    • @makcabessa9178
      @makcabessa9178 Před 5 lety +3

      That's great news!
      But I would remain cautious for a while. It may come back. Overnight resets are good for temporarily clearing symptoms, but often an underlying cause is still there. So just be on the lookout for a while that the problem may come back. If you do find yourself stranded, know that to clear the "won't even crank" condition, often you may only need 5 -10 mins of tying the cables together to get you back on the road. It may last for a few weeks or just that one session before coming back. It is also possible that your battery posts had merely built up too much oxidization/corrosion, and by the act of removing them and re-attaching, it made for better contact between the cables and posts and you'll be fine from here on.
      If it ever comes to it, know that we do have the '11 Durango TIPMs in stock.
      Good luck!

    Just wanted to say this works for a 2008 Dodge Avenger. I had a headlight go out because of a bad TIPM. After a 45 dollar charge for a used TIPM on EBay and the hard reset described in this video my headlight is working fine. Even noticed that my power windows and windshield wipers are more responsive. Thanks for making this video, the dealer wanted to charge me a $1000 to replace and "reprogram" the TIPM. What you do really saves average folks money.Thanks Mak!

    I have 3 Chrysler/Dodge Caravans, 2001 to 2007. All of them had electrical issues when I got them [probably why they were sold cheap at auction] Mainly battery drain down and gauges going bonkers. I disconnected the battery and pulled all the plugs off the electric brain, TIPM. I carefully cleaned the male plugs with a brush or q tip and then coated all connectors with NO-ALOX a common electrical corrosion preventer and connection enhancer. Problem solved permanently on all three. Never did the battery cable connection to one another, obviously didn't need to at least in my 3 cases. But great info here, thanks

    I was working on a 2012 town and country that had multiple issues, including a battery drain, the right brake light on all the time, the fuel sendor signal was erratic, had a code for ign/run circuit, so we bought a used TIPM and installed and it wouldn't start! , I start reading online and heard you can't even program a used tipm, so we're just about to order a brand new tipm, but I kept searching online and found mak's website, so I emailed him and told him if he could help me figure out why it wouldn't start even after the hard reset procedure, he asked me to double check connections, but I kept thinking to myself that all the connectors were installed right because I made sure I heard the "click " on every one , but sure enough one wasn't seated all the way, the van started and all I had to do was an abs intialization procedure. Thank you Mak so much for everything i will definitely spread the word to all my fellow shop mates!

    I have a 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee and recently it had not started. This wasn’t the first time this had happened, in fact about a month ago I had went to a salon and was in there for about 4-5 hours and when I came out my car wouldn’t start. There was no turnover when I turned the key but everything inside worked that was battery powered so I knew it did not need to be jumped. I ended up having to get it towed and the dealership could not find anything wrong with it the next day. (It started right away for them) So about $400 later for the tow and the full inspection they had no answer for us but said that it could possibly be water damage in the TIPM. They said it would be $500 just for a new one not including the installation. This time around I found THIS VIDEO!!!! I followed the exact steps and tried to let it sit for two hours the first time and no luck. But when I let the tipm sit inside over night and put it back together the next morning, the car started right up. It’s a great feeling to have saved probably close to $1000 by doing something that took 10 minutes to take out and then 10 minutes to put back together. THANKYOU FOR THIS TRICK!! So awesome

    I bought my '08 Dodge Avenger on August 4th 2017 and it seemed fine up until September 5th, when I got an oil change at Jiffy Lube. They told me my rear turn signals weren't working, which came as a shock to me, since I always signal and would have noticed the dash blinking double-time prior to that oil change. I knew my trunk lid used to fill up with water, so I changed my bulbs, removed the plugs from the bottom of the trunk and sealed the 3rd trunk light fixture with silicone to prevent water from getting in during heavy rains. None of that worked. From there my troubles grew to no brake lights, trouble starting (I had to use a jumper pack 90% of the time and even then, it took 2-7 attempts) and even my car completely shutting off on me while I was driving. Last symptom was my passenger side window refusing to close and having to fight with the switch for about 5mins.
    I got my car diagnosed at a Dodge dealership on 9/20 and they told me I needed a new PCM, TIPM, tune up, trans service, battery, cam position sensor, and valve cover gasket. I was completely unwilling to invest that much into this vehicle and they seemed adamant about getting me to just trade my car in and buy one from them OR pay $3300 (almost double what I paid for the car) and wait 2months for them to receive backordered replacement parts. Absolutely not. However, I did go ahead and buy a battery from Sears on 9/23. They said that it was grounding out and that there was an electrical issue in my vehicle that was causing the TWO brand new batteries they placed in it to test badly. They even upgraded it to a Diehard Gold for me for free because they were simply baffled by the issue. That new battery ended up reducing the frequency of my startup troubles, but all the other power issues remained
    I spoke to Mak Cabessa and Jason Bell, the TIPM experts, on 9/28. They recommend I change the TIPM module, so I ordered a used one for $40 on eBay (with the $6, 6-month warranty) to install for myself. It arrived on Tuesday, but I waited until Friday after work to install it. I followed the steps on the verticalvisions website and IT FIXED EVERYTHING!!! It's like I just woke up from a nightmare and I couldn't be more proud and relieved. DO NOT LET DODGE FOOL YOU INTO BUYING A TIPM FROM THEM!!!

    2008 Chrysler Town and Country with 158k miles. On Christmas Day while 700 miles from home, our van wouldn't even attempt to turn over using key fob or ignition switch. Radio would turn on, lights would turn on, and key fob would even open sliding doors. However, the horn wouldn't work, door locks wouldn't work using either the key fob or internal buttons. Even though my battery was only 2 weeks old, I placed it on a trickle charger for a few hours just in case. No change. I disconnected and reconnected the battery and still couldn't start the van. I started researching my symptoms and came across this video. I disconnected the battery, shorted the cables together, and removed the TIPM. While the TIPM was removed, I re-validated each of the fuses and then let it sit for about an hour. Upon re-connecting the TIPM, I let it sit for another 30 minutes before plugging the battery back in. Once I did that, I noticed my door locks began working and my van fired right up! Although Christmas turned into frustration, I'm so happy to know I'm not showing up at a dealership in a desperate state to make it home. I may still replace the van soon, but at least I have time to make an informed decision. Thanks!!!

If it does come back, and you need to clear it more quickly to get home (particularly the brake lights issue), you can try just doing it for 15 minutes or so to see if that is enough to clear it again (and at least temporarily) get your brake lights back to get home. Good luck!

    A friend of mine is having typical TIPM symptoms on a 09 Grand Caravan. She took it to the dealership and they said she needed a new TIPM. Her problems (so far) have been with the wipers and lights, no drivability issues (again, so far.) I found a tipm from a junkyard that they say is good. Just so I'm clear on this, your saying it won't need any programming from the dealership? Just a "hard reset"?

It will not start the vehicle or anything, but anything electrical in the system will use that energy. Thus draining it, resetting the fault codes and causing a hard reset to the TIPM. @guesswho242 Před 7 lety +16

    Shorting the battery cables should cause any charged caps to discharge completely in minutes. Not hours and certainly overnight. IF you disconnect the FUSE box, you're essentially accomplishing the same END, however, disconnecting it will cause you to have to wait longer but certainly NOT SEVERAL HOURS as the charged caps SLOWLY lose their residual charge! There is IN FACT NO NEED to do both. And most certainly you only need to short the battery terminals for a few seconds to maybe a minute or so. Really, you only need to disconnect the NEGATIVE Battery terminal for a few minutes and that should be long enough to any charged capacitors to discharge completely.
    Peace

    • @guesswho242
      @guesswho242 Před 7 lety +7

      If you've rebuilt them, then you should know where the capacitors are and discharge them and it will be reset and function normally. What you are doing is resetting the TIPM the hard way in my opinion. Shorting the battery terminals isn't enough by itself because of a bit of impedance caused by minor to major corrosion, wire length, common +/- connections a the Starter motor. The charged capacitors need to be completely shorted out and or allowed to die over time. I would think that if you leave the battery terminals shorted for a few hours - in the case of resistance - that should do the trick. You could figure out which wires that plug into the TIPM are the power wires for each section, and short them to kill the caps. The only place residual charge will remain is in the caps, or anywhere there is capacitance in any of the lines.
      It is convenient and simplified to have the TIPM under the hood but it's best to have inside the vehicle where it's completely out of the harsh environment being exposed to the elements including constant oxidation!
      In any case, your solution obviously works, I personally wouldn't go that route but, your method does work!
      Good work and Godspeed young man!

      I don't suggest buying any front wheel drive GM vwhicles from 2002-2014, all their batteries are in the trunk under the floor boards, and if you have stuff in the trunk, may the powers that be bless your upper body strength and patience. Because if you have battery or electrical issues, it's a royal pain in the azz to move and remove things just to get to the battery or spare tire.

    Did this and it worked fine.
    It's doing it again. I have an 09 dodge avenger (pos) I think my wife bought the wrong gas cap . Will a faulty gas cap cause the computer to trip and idle funny again. So I just did this again and purchase a better gas cap.
    The gas cap light always turns on.

      If the cap is totally a wrong fit I can imagine that issues related to cap closure sensor status or tank atmospheric pressure conditions could have an impact on some vehicles. Not familiar with this issue. I’d be sure I had the right cap and then see if the problem persists. Could be completely unrelated to the cap. Does original cap have an embossed part number? If so, give us a call. We probably have it. If not, I’d be surprised if a cap that makes such a difference didn’t have a unique well-identified part number

    Once the two leads are connected turn key to start and depress the brakes (lights are why) afew times to drain them capacitors real fast and reset keep alive memory.

    I have a 2009 Jeep Compass that needed the passenger side headlight replaced. Bought a new lamp and installed it to find it still not working. I tried the new lamp in the driver's side and it worked fine. Also tried the original 'faulty' lamp and it worked as well. Put a multimeter on the plug and found the right voltage to both passenger and driver's side. The ground read bad on the passenger's side so I checked the connection at the frame and all looked ok. Then I ran a wire from the neg battery post and tapped into the ground wire at the lamp plug. Read with the meter again and all seemed good. Plugged a good lamp back in and still no light! I should add that I've been getting seemingly spurious codes and indicators (low tire, ESP and oil pressure indicator, etc.) for some time but they were simply annoying. Car also began bucking now and then but not consistently. I tried the hard reset of the TIPM following your instructions to the letter but that didn't work. I hate the thought of taking this to a dealer. Any thoughts/suggestions?

    • @sonof1954
      @sonof1954 Před 6 lety

      Another odd thing. When I scan for codes I'm told there are 5, two of which are repeating so in fact there are three. When I try to clear them in the usual way when I scan again immediately I get codes again. I can't clear all of them sometimes 1 or 2. Weird, huh? I have never had this issue and my scanner works flawlessly on other vehicles.

      @@makcabessa9178 Hi Mak I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee 05 Hemi, the battery light stays on and doesn't let me turn it on, it says check gauges, everything seems to be fine but when I disconnect the terminals of the battery for a while it works fine but later it happens again, do you think that the TIPM is faulty?

    I got a 2018 ram 1500. No headlights and parking light issues in the front.

    Replaced the headlight switch any wasn't the problem.

      These issues could be TIPM related, but unfortunately we cannot say if the TIPM is the cause unless we have it in our shop for testing.

      @TIPMRebuildersKevin I've done a few tipm. Those had wiper, door lock, fuel pump issues etc.
      There's no fuse or relay for headlights in this thing? Never seen that. All the fuses are good.. none are designated to lighting at all.
      Weird. Just don't want to pull the trigger on the tipm and that not correct it
