She is. But if you look closely, there are places where her hands don't match what's going on. Watch the intro. She starts with that repeated roll pattern, and just as the intro ends, there is a snappy little descending riff that happens just before she starts to sing, but neither her left nor right hand changes one blink during that riff. She's probably playing "along", but she's not the guitar you are hearing.
Guitarists can see she is not plauing that guitar. Could be many reasons for that... Like her nails for instance... I cant play with acrilic nails too..

Coldsmoke it depends on what lvl u are gonna play this in. Just using pick will be easiest coz u won’t be using fingerstyle. Then comes the fingerstyle , even in fingerstyle there are two ways to play with thumb independence or without thumb independence. Dolly here in some parts is doing independent thumb. Even just doing that takes years of skill

@@russellsmith8506 The tricky part is to be able to play the palm muted notes while finger picking. _THAT_ part is difficult, to be able to still get your thumb in there without blocking other notes while they are supposed to be ringing out, and no one (and I would assume yourself as well) I've seen play it either realizes that some of the notes are muted, or don't bother to do it. I'm guessing other people just aren't observant enough to notice it. I'm kind of an OCD perfectionist, note-for-note kind of guy -- perhaps even to a fault.
Am I the only person here who knows the history of Dolly Partons method for playing guitar with her nails? I’m a super beginner guitar player but I have longish natural nails and wanted to learn to play with them so I don’t have to keep them short, so I’m committed to eventually learning her method. Essentially she exclusively plays barre chords and uses open tuning to play major chords without needed to use individual fingers to fret out a chord. And she’s clearly one of the best at doing it! Whether or not she’s playing live here is anybody’s guess, but if your doubts are coming from her nail length please know that’s not an issue for her.

You can hear her breath hitting the mic, etc. Plus, to the "trained Dolly fan" ear, it is always very obvious when she is miming her vocals (which she has been doing on tour since 2004). This is one the of the rare instances in the last 15 years where she is actually live (vocally), so please let us enjoy it! :)
It’s probably because she donates so much! And absolutely, a hauntingly beautiful tone on guitar; what else did she have to do growing up so poor, she always made the best of everything, and her guitar reflects just that.
This is not Dolly playing the guitar. I think she’s airbanding it there. The real guitar work is done by a guy behind the wall. And yes she plays a classical guitar, and even though there is a classical guitar on the original recording, it is not her playing it either. The real classical guitar work done on the original recording was by a session player named Chip Young, while the acoustic guitar on the recording was being played by Wayne Moss.
