  • John from www.okraw.com/ tastes tests the rare subtropical champagne papaya that he grew in his backyard in California.
In this episode, John takes you on an exciting taste-testing journey with the rare subtropical fruit known as Babaco, or champagne papaya aka Mountain Papaya. Grown in his backyard, John emphasizes the unique qualities of Babaco, highlighting its ability to thrive in cooler, drier climates, unlike the common tropical papaya. He explains that the Babaco's rarity means most people will never taste it unless they grow it themselves. John discusses its robust aroma and complex flavor profile, likening it to a blend of kiwi, strawberry, pineapple, and papaya, and notes its high vitamin C content and beneficial enzyme, papain, which aids digestion.
Viewers will learn about the growing conditions and care required for Babaco, as John shares his personal experience of cultivating it with minimal maintenance in an unheated greenhouse. He highlights the fruit's resilience, as it can survive with infrequent watering and still produce high-quality, tree-ripened fruits. John also delves into the importance of consuming fully ripened fruits directly from the tree, explaining how this practice ensures maximum flavor and nutritional value. He further educates his audience on proper storage techniques, revealing that Babaco can last up to a month without refrigeration and offers tips on how to prolong its shelf life using optimal storage temperatures.
Additionally, John introduces a practical demonstration of enhancing fruit consumption through smoothies. He showcases a ninja portable blender and demonstrates how to convert it into a vacuum blender with a specialized lid kit. By vacuum blending Babaco with sweet tangerines, John creates a flavorful, low-glycemic fruit smoothie. This segment not only highlights the versatility and benefits of Babaco but also provides viewers with a useful tool for integrating more fruits into their diet.
Through this episode, John inspires viewers to explore new fruits, grow their produce, and utilize innovative methods like vacuum blending to elevate their raw vegan lifestyle.
