Can you beat Pokemon Leaf Green with Only Trapinch
1. Dont cheat because if u do u are no diffrent from a lot of people that are cheating.... just play as u always play.
2. Why arent u doing hgss or b2w2 runs?
@Mah-Dry-Bread Thanks for the link, it's always nice to see people supporting struggling channels.
I think it would be a good idea to use the rare candy cheat you mentioned at the end of the video, yes it is cheating but your main limit is time, and I'm sure the vast majority of us viewers appriciate how much effort you put in to the channel already. I think so long as you wait until post game and limit levels to a fair amount (maybe equal or slighlty less than the opponent) then it shouldn't bother most people, and these challenges have always been about the strategies rather than the grind. It won't take away from our viewing experience as we rarely see the grind anyway, and anything you can do to make things easier on yourself without making your content worse off or even make it better should be a no-brainer.
Speed-up, levelling cheats for the post-game fight etc. wouldn't bother me at all. If it saves you time without doing anything about having to figure out tactics etc. I don't see a problem at all. If anything, you reducing your workload a little for the same amount of videos is probably a good thing.
I agree with everything, except the levelling cheats they would be fine for every challenge except a nuzlock because accidents can happen in the grind.
@@Xapheion101 most nuzlocks only go to the champion and then are never played with anyway. I think even for nuzlocks it should be fine unless it's like Gold and Silver.
@@Xapheion101 honestly, not if you do it smart. There is nothing stopping you from grinding against underdeveloped and safe pokemon, so the only difference is time.
I agree. I trust MDB to use it only when it will save him time
Agreed. I have mentioned it in other videos and would go further, just spam rare candies for any super long grinds needed. Doesnt change anything for anyone except saving MDB time
Edit: Also, I would argue that NOT using rare candies and essentially not completing a run due to time like in this video is way worse than using the candies
Rare candies are definitely fine for post game boss fights. Like you said, it doesn't take away from the difficulty, just the grinding. Grinding in video games isn't difficult, its just tedious
finally sonone that understand what difficulty in rpgs especially pokemon means, making a fight harder does not make the gqame easier or harder at all all it means just more grind to beat it is all if only the rest of the community understood that
@@BeanSparrow see smallant videos where tactics matter most

@@rebeccaconlon9743 that ones bad too yes, i'd rather have 15 joey plugs in gold/silver/crystal than any of those, and i hate the joey plug
"do you want that?" Yes simply yes, the challenge will be more complete if you don't have the time to grind, and curiosity is just left unsatisfied if you don't, like for example what level would you need to be if you made it, could you actually make it with only normal type moves etc. Great challenge tho.
Ooo
If you ever find yourself using slaking again, I would like to recommend putting hyper beam on it. Hyper beams recharge is on the same turn as truant. The only downside is lack of pp, but 5-8 150 power moves used as often as all other moves on slaking seems worth it to me
Also in gen 3 its physicals based not special, which means on anything with super high attack stat it absolutely destroys. Slap Hyper beam on a slaking with silk scarf and watch everything fall. I miss hyper beam Gyarados and Slaking T_T.
@@mrsinbad6048 yea. Nowadays I slap giga impact on em. Never gets old
Other downside is you can't switch out while recharging, whereas you can switch out on Truant turns.
@@ferrishthefish AND THE MISS CHANCE! Never forget the 99% for a move with less than 100% accuracy to miss at a critical moment!
True, if you have to skip a turn might as well blast them with Hyper Beams
To quote what PokemonChallenges says:
"Grinding for the entertainment, as well as seeing someone grind, isn't all that fun, so rare candies cut the time to get to the entertainment"
Sure he was talking about nuzlocks but i think it fits
Also, rare candies don't grant EV's, so if those aren't full, they are strictly worse than grinding. I say use them.
considering he doesn’t incorporate level caps rare candies could be problematic but MDB has shown he doesnt want to overlevel his Pokémon to make these challenges easy so I think using rare candies would allow him to put out so much more content
@@Schwazoom not really, he always grinded on Pokemon that were a lot lower level and couldnt kill him even with multiple crits in a row. This does of course make it even more boring though
@@Schwazoom Not if you grind on route 1. Leveling up in a nuzlock require absolutely no skill. If you lose a Pokemon during grinding in a nuzlock it's only because you didn't backtrack enough to make it trivial.
I think if you feel like thepost-game fight is winnable with a grind, leveling with some rare candies is perfect. No need to waste time especially when you've likely capped out evs for those pokemon
About the Rare Candy thing; It's entirely up to you. I really don't mind if you use Rare Candies so you can relax a bit between challenges and finish them quicker, maybe focus more on editing and RELAXING. You are such a hard worker and you deserve more rest. Take care!
I think that as a Christmas gift to MDB, we should give him a “can you defeat pokemon emerald with only a rayquaza” run
Or for a real break, a Q&A on Pokemon challenges. Or even just a general Q&A
I’m okay with an overpowered team beat down of any version...MDB needs a “fun” run
Yeah
or give him 6 legendaries of his choice
Yes
Definitely use rare candies for any super long grinds in the future! Grinding just wastes time and they don't give you an unfair advantage unless you overlevel.
In fact, if you not overlevel, candies give you a handicap from not giving pokemon EVs.
@@MarshallLeeFlames if I'm not mistaken, he doesn't EV train unless absolutely nessisary. Usually 1 Pokemon runs
@@SoggyCoffeeAddict he doesn't. But grinding old school grants you more buffs on your stats either if you run for a 256, 256 EV training or a diverse spread.
@@SoggyCoffeeAddict the challenge is more about his patience. So I don't find it fair. Just my opinion I guess
"I need other Pokemon to use NON-NORMAL HMs..."
Me, 55 seconds into the video: I think I see where this is going
Using speed-up/rare candies for postgame is like when Mythbusters busts a myth early on in the episode and then goes "but what would it take for it to be actually true, though?".
Comopletely fine to do and also enjoyable to watch.
Fun tip with using Slaking in gen 3: Just teach it Hyper Beam! It's no different from having the Truant ability and yet you're doing 150 base damage that does physical damage and gets STAB, not to mention silk scarf.
I think rare candies should be allowed to bring your team up to snuff with post game fights. They shouldn’t be allowed during the normal run pre-hof but to speed up the post game to see if it would be possible would be cool to see!
I think that Rare Candy x999 for Steven and Red makes sense, though first attempt should be pre-candy. I'm always in favor or anything that improves your QOL. Great run.
I personally think rare candies are fine, especially for post game fights. It's more interesting to see if it's possible to win at all than to see if you end up with enough time to grind to a sufficient level
Serious question, why didn’t you consider guts facade Swellow? The damage potential on that thing is insane
The only thing I can think of is that prepoisoning/burning can get tedious, but I can’t say much because I advocate hyperbeam slaking
Toxic/flame Orb aren't in these games and it can be annoying having to poison/burn it every time. I wouldn't use it in these games. Also, no Roost.
I'm currently using a Heracross with Atk+ SpDef- Nature, and Guts in BDSP. Already have Swords Dance on it. That is some serious attack output.
@@syndere6755 Aaron’s got the same plan
I was thinking the same and it's defently 1 he should of used
A really useful normal move in this challenge would've been super fang. It reduces the enemy's hp to half regardless if it's super effective or not.
I'm also surprised I didn't see flail or endeavor.
Facade too for the skarmory poison.
Any type of time saver is perfectly fine by me. Especially on the runs where you need to match a specific team I would say use something like pkhex to simply edit the team to the appropiate level and moves.
I agree for candying up for the post game fights, that said it is nice to see how low a level you can manage so giving it a few goes every couple of levels instead of spamming straight to 100 is ideal.
I was confused how this would work with ghost types, but then I realized, this run is finally the time where Odor Sleuth and Foresight will Actually Be Useful (and I expect Mudkip as the starter since it gets Foresight by level up)
I agree with your name

For the post game fights I see no issue with using rare candies. It can even be fine for elite 4 as long as the rare candies aren't used to ridiculously over lvl.
Great video, good job with that challenge, seemed interesting, keep it up!
The key to keep lianoon competetive is to use belly drum using it, as long as ypu can set it up, it is fast enough and hits like a truck
Yeah but it doesn’t learn that until 53 in Emerald, that’s endgame only.
im fine with you using rare candies for the post game red/steven/league rematch fights, just dont level all the way to 100 right away xD, start at the opponements level, then increase by a couple if you lose or something
Aggron quad resisting you at the end was pure pain
Really enjoyed your background music choices in this one! Also a very fun challenge!
5:11 Ah yes, Outrage, the normal attack XDDD
I would be OK with a rare candy cheat for the final challenging battle. After you've tried your best, you should deserve to try it at a higher level.
Hey Mah-Dry-Bread I think that Can I beat pokemon gold with only a aipom or Can I beat pokemon platinum with only a buizel can both be fun runs
I came back looking for this week’s video and remembered you had to prepare for the holidays. I’m sad, but happy you can take the time to prepare now so that you might actually get to enjoy the holidays my man!
I've been listening to your vids all day while I work and a few times you'd mentioned a disability which I really took to heart as someone with a disability myself (spina bifida). Really appreciate your enthusiasm and positivity and seeing someone push against the odds. Keep them coming and I'll keep listening. Great work!
I can only imagine how chaotic Phoebe's fight is going to be: a concussion of Pressure and Odor Sleuth spam.
Foresight
Metronome
@@mahranislam3554 I'm pretty sure MDB is gonna avoid Metronome like the plague, lol
@@mahranislam3554 I don't think there's a Pokémon that learns metronome by level up in RSE.
@@twistednipzz Snorlax?
Yes, if time is getting tight, I think it’s fine to use a candy glitch.
I always love when you call Gyarados ‘Water Onix’. That is so funny
I really like this "only one type move" challenge. I did RBY with just grass type moves once and it was a lot of fun (Blane was almost a challenge. Almost.)
I suggest a Red/Blue run with only Magmar. If you look at its move list you’ll understand why.
If you want throw in no Tms for added challenge I’m pretty sure magmar would have one of the highest base stat totals for a mon in a single run that you’ve done so far.
I think it's like
Lvl 1 Ember
Lvl 1 Leer
Lvl 31 Fire Spin
Definitely feel free to skip the grind, especially for the end game fight when it wouldn't otherwise happen. Way better than missing out on that result and we don't really see much of the grind anyways
Hey glad to see this challenge. I remember commenting it on one of your video when you asked for idea.
I enjoy watching your runs, go for it!
Rare candy dupes for the postgame fight makes sense; you've spent the entire run developing strategies permissible under the restrictions set, by the time you're at the postgame fight the strategies are usually locked in and it becomes a numbers game. Making the numbers go up is just a sheer time investment, no clever tricks or strats can make remove that factor.
Maybe try it at the level you're at after the champion, if it looks like you only need to get a couple more levels grind that out, but if it's a multiple team member challenge or a straight up "even level 100 is a maybe", then bring out the candy spam.
For the post game fights I see no issue rewarding your team with well-earned sweets.
I think level cheats for post game exclusively would be great. You've already won by that point anyway so it's just to see how your team fares against an additional challenge, there's no reason that should require a huge time investment
Love these videos!
Why didn’t you just use the belly drum strat with linoone, all of the elite 4 always waste their first turn or using protect or set up weather, and just use extreme speed or return, same with Steven, it’s probably gonna use toxic but if the linoone has guts it’s pretty much a sweep until the toxic damage takes him out
So much this
Linoone can't have Guts.
@@andreaverone9377 oh, yeah, i confused him with raticate in that sense, my bad, but still the X4 atack should be more than enough, if not use also a pre burned sweillow and a zangoose with facade
I feel like the steven fight in emerald is a total justification for rare candy cheats, possibly even red on gen 2 runs but i feel like the grind there isn't as bad of the emerald grind
This was a very fun run to watch. You get to use so many moves that you wouldn't normally use like screech and yawn, which leads to cool strategies. GG
I would love to see you doing a vulpix only run in a gen of your choice! You are awesome and vulpix is awesome! So a perfect fit!
GG! Nice Run as always!
How about a Run with only Poison-Moves?
For me, it is okay to use Rare Candies, to the end and to minimize Grinding Sessions. ✌🏼
that would only be possible in gen 7 onwards, no poison move has any effect on steel types so you would need salazzle's corrosion to deal with them.
@@EsoiTheGrumpyMawile I know that ;) But since MDB is not running the latest Gens, he should be "fine". ;)
Could work in a gen 1 run, no steel types and the moves are terrible enough to be funny
It would be really interesting to try similar runs with different move types (e.g. “Can I Beat Pokemon Platinum with only Fire Type Moves). The only problem is it wouldn’t be entirely possible to do that for the whole game, and it might not be as difficult as Normal type moves.
Even so, normal is my favorite type, so I’m totally down to see more. As for rare candies, if you only used them in moderation and only for the post game fight, I see absolutely nothing wrong with that.
When you say it’s not possible, do you mean without over leveling and if not, what makes it impossible? I’m not the best at Pokémon in general so I’m really curious
@@tysonmaddox1090 Flash Fire ability makes it impossible
@@tysonmaddox1090 What I mean is that there’s probably no way to get a fire type move right at the beginning without editing a Pokémon’s moveset. It’s not the end of the world if that’s the case, but it does make the challenge marginally less exciting.
Also, @LilDiamondJc is correct. Any Pokémon with Flash Fire would render the challenge impossible.
@@TheBestEver1998 There is mold breaker Cranidos with flamethrower in diamond/platin
i think the rare candy thing is completely fine. mostly for the post game fights. i feel like its more of a "this is what you would need to actually do the challenge all the way to the end" rather than a cheat if that makes any sense. love your vids they've really helped me out of some tougher spots like today.
I like knowing that some challenges are done. Like you gave it your best shot possible. Now if you came back to it later maybe idk
There is absolutely no issue with spawning in rare candy if you can. Sure, it's technically cheating but it doesn't actually make the game easier if you just use them appropriately and it probably can save hours per playthrough. And if anything it makes the game a little harder because using a rare candy doesn't get you stat exp/ev's.
I would rather see what a legitimate attempt at post-game boss looks like than see attempts the are at a reduced level due to time constraints. Rare candies cut down on grinding when evs are spread the way you want them.
I find these types of runs far more interesting than ones like Magikarp Only, which are basically hit A until you die. There was a surprising amount of strategy in this with the move variety!
Rare candies for the normal run, is a no, but for post game fight like steven and red pls do.
No need for you to grind. Rather u slowly level them up with rare candies so we can se what level it might or might not be possible. Like 3-5 tries each 5 levels. Use the grind time for that ❤️ Amazing video as allways
Just use some rare candies, you´ve been grinding for almost three years of glorious Pokemon Challenges. You deserve some shortcuts, especially in the post game when rare candies literally don´t impact the gameplay at all.
For Postgame fights, please use rare candies like in similiar situations. Would be very interesting and entertaining to see the full fight.
Speed up is always allowed imo. Rare candies for the last fight also allowed. Keep up the good work!❤️
I don't mind rare candy for post game at all! If anything, those really hard post game fights, the question can become more "what's the highest level you need to be in order to win with this pokemon?" or "is it even possible to win this fight with the highest level pokemon?" But yeah! If it's after you've already beaten the game, I don't see a problem with using rare candies to do the extra bits. Especially if it saves you time! Good video today!
Yes. Just use rare candies for the post game or whenever the grind is reeeeaaaalllyyyyy steep. It still keeps teh video entertaining to watch and it gives you more time to spend time on other more meaningful things :)
I actually did this challenge a while back, gonna be interesting to see what different strategies / pokemon we used!
*Yes, use Rare Candy cheat for Steven*
but only if grinding is the only thing left to do to beat him.
Nice video as always, you should try Pokémon Pearl with only one cleffa, bonsly, or riolu. Could be interesting!
I think rare candies would be fine, it would help reduce the amount of time you have to sink into grinding on every run. Especially once you get to a Steven Stone situation where you get walled, I don't see why you couldn't level up a few times with candies and then attempt to see what level you'd need to be at to actually succeed.
I'm surprised no guts facade swellow. Seems like a good way to round out the team. Did I miss an only pure normal type part of the challenge?
Same here. He was worrying about Brawly with his Normal-type Pokémon and I just went “…you know, Taillow learns Quick Attack and Double Team”, lmao
He sucks at pokemon lol
Yeah that confused me too. He says only Normal-type moves, not only Normal-type Pokemon. But even so, Taillow and Swellow are part normal lol so idek.
I think that rare candies for post game fights are 100% fair for this kind of video. By that point you have found your strategies, you know about where you want your level to be (although it often seems to be quite close to 100), and that is when time is the biggest constraint. I would balk at using them through the run, because I also share a lot of your misgivings about such "Cheats", but the postgame fight seems to fall on the right side of the line. It will allow you to try that extra challenge, without having to work in the hours of extra grinding that it can require.
Great content as always! Slaking is my favorite gen 3 pokemon, so I always like seeing him get some use!
If using Rare Candies make the post game or grinding quicker then I say go for it. I like watching these so anything that makes it better for you to make videos and keep your schedule is fine by me
I say rare candy use for the post game fight is acceptable in situations like this where it’s nearly impossible without being on level (or above)
Could be cool to see some stats on when you lose (like how many tries per boss)
Dame this is actually a really good challenge idea I'm definitely gonna try it in the new remakes one day
So happy to see the old border on the video! This is much better.
An interesting idea for a challenge would be gen 5 with only deerling. It’s about as strong as a first form starter.
Fun run to watch. I also agree with the other comments, speed up just saves grinding time during the main game while still allowing effort values to have an affect on the pokemon's growth.
And at the end if you fail due to a lack of time to grind then a rare candy cheat just let's us know if it would have been possible if time wasn't a factor.
A good combo of normal moves you can use is belly drum, substitute and return, even a linoone can sweep the elite four with that
Hey, wanted to chime in about r/s/e runs, rock tunnel only has whismur, which give 1 effort value to hp. It's a really good way to make early mons bulky while grinding without too much trouble. This is always my saving grace on these runs as it makes my mons much tankier, while not doing it gives vary random effort values for simular time spent.
Using speed up for the main game is fine, and I would full on recommend it to save time. Likewise, using level up cheats in post game is a good idea. Can't speak for everyone but it doesn't bother me at all.
Same here. For the life of me, I can’t understand how or why anyone would come to the conclusion that speeding up the emulator is cheating.
The evolved form of zigzagoon is lie noon.
This was an amazing run! Thanks for uploading all of the pokemon content throughout the years.
The root fossil is my second favorite fossil.
*in McCree's voice*
It's Lieee Noooon...
Rare candies to skip tedious end game grinding is very reasonable. You usually would grind a few levels and do some attempts before grinding more, and I don't see any issue doing that with rare candies instead.
Also, for a romhack challenge to do something a bit different, Inclement Emerald could be a fun one. It's a difficulty hack with tons of quality of life changes, and hundreds more pokemon to choose from. It also appears very well-balanced, as I'm at gym 4 fighting level 40s, and my team has kept up in levels with no major grinding (and even skipping several trainers).
I feel especially for full team runs, you should givw yourself a break with the post game grinds and use rare candies. I cant imagine how long that must take
I feel like if you actually were to use the rare candy cheat that would be ok. But only for the post game fight and no over leveling past Steven's highest level Pokemon.
I don’t mind the rare candy cheat as long as it’s postgame.
Still pitching Pokemon Gold with only one mareep! Awesome video as always.
for the postgame using rare candies is totally okay. Looking forward to some interesting final battles!
It's Friday, it's payday, and it's week 38 of asking for Pokemom Sapphire with only one Absol. What else could you need?
Absol is very cool but why not in emerald?
@@jens7066 honestly, I just really like Sapphire
You know I'm surprised you don't mention, but do you remember which fossil you picked up?
Linoone was always a part of my team during my childhood play-throughs of ruby. For fire red, I always included Persian on my team.
I would have liked to see names on your team, the cute or funny names are always nice to see. Though I do remember you mentioning that names sometimes make my ou fall behind, so can’t be too upset about it. My stance on the candy cheat; go for it. If it saves you time, and for the postgame fight, it should be fine. You beat the elite four, which is the true goal of the challenge.
Regarding the rare candy question. I think for the Red or Steven post game fights maybe do what you've been doing (Grinding up some) but when you reach a point where it clearly isn't going to happen maybe just increase your party by 5 levels each until we can see if it ever would. Like when Mythbusters try to replicate the results. I was also surprised you didn't give Slaking facade at the end with it always getting poisoned and maybe a shell bell or leftovers (if there are leftovers in RSE) to counter the poison.
28:30 yes,we want that because we love your content we waiting for your videos is a huge time to wait for . You can at least use rare candies in post game fights plz...
A speed up for leveling at end game fights would not bother me at all! Good luck on the Christmas run! Can't wait!
for the post game fight after you have tried it a few times. also maybe stopping the lvl up process at the points where you would try if you where grinding but don't have the time.
I really wish these videos would get put out when they are ready rather than sticking to the strict weekly schedule. Steven would have been one of the most difficult and interesting parts of this challenge but it had to be skipped due to time constraints, which don't feel like an organic limitation. The weekly schedule really holds back a lot of the runs you do imo
this run was fun :D also I think you can totally use a rare candy cheat to max out your levels :D it just cuts down on grinding time
Only use the rare candy cheat AFTER you beat the elite four. So you can match Stevens Pokémon’s level. Great video keep it up!
I think the rare candy thing is about like this: if you're on the post battle, and can't beat it within 5-10 levels of the elite 4 battles, just max em with rare-candy and see if the team can achieve it
One thing I would've suggested I you ever re-tried this run is getting a Tailow. You wouldn't be able to use it to its fullest potential, but once you get Facade, you can get it burned from wild Slugma with Flame Body before each major fight and sweep with Silk Scarf+Guts+stab double power Facade
I would honestly love to see a Linoone only run after seeing just how well yours performed this run. I've always loved that pokemon ever since I got my first shiny, a zigzagoon named Ziggy.
It can pretty much sweep the Elite 4 and Champion with Belly Drum / Substitute / Return so it's probably too good. Check out FlygonHG's video about it.
For me the theoretical legit winnability is more important than real hours sunk into grinding. If all you've got left is the E4 and/or postgame, go for the rare candies.
I think once you’re in the post game like the Steven Stone fight in this or the Red fight in Gold/Silver it’s 100% alright to use a rare candy code. Cause (especially in Red’s case) he’s a way higher level than the league. That way you don’t gotta grind for 40 levels
