Hot take: I loved the 2014 movie designs for the Turtles. Up until that point, there had been very little to distinguish between the different turtles except for their mask colors. 2014 gave us unique, fleshed out designs for everyone and made it possible to tell them apart even with their masks off. It helped establish each brother as a unique identity that could never be replaced.
The Nick cartoon reboot did exactly that though, and that came out a whole two years before this movie. So no, I don't give this movie credit for that, especially when the cartoon looks infinitely more appealing.
@@felixdaniels37 But the 2012 versions don't look too different from each other. Sure, the 2012 versions had different shades of green to them but it's barely noticeable compared to the 2014 versions where they had unique accessories and different body types from buff to skinny. So no, the 2014 version definitely deserves credit for making turtle designs very unique compared to each other for the first time in the TMNT Cartoons/Movies
The wildest thing is that he's calling out Michael Bay for being racist, but like he doesn't realize he's looking super racist for even doing that shit. It's so funny, his lack of self-awareness.
I honestly would've liked to see Eric Sacks as Shredder in the film. He was strange and acted weird in the film so it made sense for him to be the Shredder, but we got a boring tool to be the Shredder instead
Honestly even back when I saw the designs in the first trailer. They didn't look that bad to me, I mean does everyone forget what a real life turtle's face look like ? Now make it look humanoid and you get this. The only I would change is maybe make them a little shorter and leaner except Raphael since he's suppose to be the muscle of the group and bam.
Though a lot of it was CGI, they actually did some live-action shoots for the Mountain Scenes in my hometown of Tupper Lake, which is in New York, just 6+ hours away from the City. My aunt even got to meet Michael Bay at a screening they had in our local theater for it!
Pan, I know the chances you see this are low however I just want to say this was an incredibly nostalgic video! You were one of the first youtubers I ever followed, and that happened in correlation to me being really into the TMNT 2012 show back when i was in middle school. I enjoyed the Michael Bay movie a little, but my friend and I also loved shitting on it because we liked the TV show more. Kinda crazy to think I've been watching your videos for roughly 10 years now!
speaking of the 2012 show i remember watching out of the shadows in theaters when i was 12 thinking it was based off and was set in the 2012 show continuity
It's amazing how the first TMNT was such a nothing-burger because of all the course-correcting they had to do behind the scenes. So when they actually decided to listen to the fans with the sequel, it was too little to late.
they even did that wrong since while they tried to follow the 80s cartoon more they still wanted to follow the things established in the first one ending with a mix bag that never commits to either side which in my opinion is even worse, like going to your favorite restaurant but only be allowed to eat bread also they have the worst casey jones period
The fact that splinter learning ninjitsu from youtube being more believable than learning it from a book just shows that even animated movies can be more matured than a edgy live action blockbuster
Hey, they even had him had a sloppy style that even pays tribute to his VA, Jackie Chan. It's stupid and silly, but it was a lot more fun and surprising to watch than the Bay films efforts to make his fighting seem "Badass".
...how? Learning from a book is more mature than from friggin' CZcams videos, that's just cringe "modernized" crap. I swear, you wouldn't be saying that if this was the movie where they learn from CZcams videos and Mutant Mayhem was the one with the book.
Wait, how does Disney own that design? that movie was always paramount. I'm pretty sure they just let Disney use it as a joke in Chip & Dale. Disney to my knowledge has no involvement with that movie or with sonic as a whole. other none Disney stuff appears in that film doesn't mean Disney owns (women cosplaying as Wonder Woman at a convention)
@emptyglass7867 but there’s not Paramount credit in the Credits for Chip n Dale. By that Logic, Disney owns Ugly Sonic. He should have been in Once Upon a Studio.
I don't know if anyone's ever brought up this point yet but… anglicizing "Oroku Saki" into "Eric Sacks" makes absolutely no sense when you really think about it.
It doesn't, it would be closer to something like "Erriku Sakushi", but I could totally see a writing room full of people who know nothing about Japanese coming up with that and thinking it was clever.
Are you all fucking serious? It's already been a full week and yet none of you are going to ask what the actual problem is? I left this comment open ended so that one of you ungrateful bastards would do that and you all just ignore it? Fine, I'll just say what it is because I've already lost my patience. The problem with his name is that… "Oroku" is his _surname_ . This shows that the filmmakers don't know how East Asian naming conventions work!
I remember seeing the memes around CZcams I find it funny how this movie is the opposite of the Sonic Movie where nothing changed and everyone hated it.
I remember how controversial this movie was before it released. Everything, from the alien turtles to the Halloween costumes to the trailers to the 9/11 poster. It’s so funny this movie was surrounded by controversy, only to barely be talked about a decade later.
tmnt have always had aliens, they come from dimension X. reble taxi disappointed me for the first time today, but not knowing enough tmnt lore :( also splinter was originally a human ninja turned into a mutant rat, thats why he is human sized
I know Splinters origin changes depending on canon, but I thought since he started as a rat here, he should be compared to the other origins where he was a rat. Also I'm aware of aliens and dimension x and all the utrom stuff, I saw a bunch of the 2003 TMNT.
13:08 no, the anglicized version would be something along the lines of zack orock or olock since japanese names have the surname first and first name last
I feel bad for hating on these designs now. Honestly, they're alright but like, there are sooo many extra details that just are too much for me. They scream "concept art" but Bay's busy as fuck visuals make it clear that he saw how busy they were and said "NO, no second drafts, GIVE DONNY A MILLION GLASSES CUZ HE'S A NERRRD". It's just...a lot.
Is a nice "turn off your brain movie", if it's on cable I leave it there and the action flows nicely in the later half, but yeah, the ambient is WAY too dark half the time as to really drink in all the little details and knicknacks and charms plastered all over the turtles and then when they're finally outside in the daylight and they move is like a blur of bullshit, I can't distinguish anything from the neck down
@@Homodemon That's honestly another reason I was so harsh on it, dark, murky and overly detailed was something I'd grown to hate even to this day. it's why I much prefer the aesthetics of something like Dragon Quest over the style of Final Fantasy or many gritty fantasy games. Simplistic and stylized just had a greater appeal to me, it's such a shame these fine designs had so much weighed against them...
Interesting video but how did you mix up Michelangelo's voice actor and Raph? I mean that is a really big mistake there. Robbie Rist did not voice Raphael in the live action TMNT films he voiced Mikey. In the first movie that was an actor named Josh Pais who voiced Raphael.
Ngl for the designs, i personally really liked all the random crap they had DIYed onto themselves, the faces were just the weirder part to me, i wish they leaned more on the turtle aspect. Not too much as to make them too animal-like, but just enough to give them some kind of monstrous psuedo beak or something like what that one animated movie with Batman did.
To be completely honest, I think I might've liked the original concept for this movie. It seems completely crazy and stupid. But a fun kind of crazy stupid.
Honestly for me it's basically the same vibe as that superman flyby script where as a elseworld story or or as a story on its own its pretty fun but as a mainline adaptation no just fucking no
This is really late and hindsight is 20/20 but it would’ve been so cool if they had used Utrom Shredder from the 2003 TMNT show. Like have Eric Sacks be a disguise for Ch’rell. Would be a fun twist and would at least salvage the changes made.
ive noticed that a lot of 2010s reviewers and critiques liked using that "this media got r***d by the execs" terminology, and overall that never sat right with me. seeing it being used by so many fans back then for this film hits that close to home. (this was typed out before the end of the robbie rist text, so it turns out you brought up the same thing lol) asides from that though, very good video!
The turtles are already a bizarre group of superheroes, it would seem too hard to tell an origin story supposed to be faithful to the cartoons or the comics in a Live Action movie. I guess the turtles were supposed to be aliens on the original script just to somehow simplify how their origin story was going to be told. Like in the Sonic movies, where the writers made Sonic, Tails and Knuckles as aliens. I am not sure if the viewers would receive well if Sonic was a blue hedgehog that somehow was born on Earth. It makes sense in a videogame, but not in a Live Action movie, I don't know. EDIT: Of course, it's easy to make a Live Action about mutant turtles, but I guess it would be too hard to adapt Master Splinter's origin (a mutant rat who was once the pet of a ninja in Japan), for example.
Megan saying she would marry Leo and have a one-night stand with Raph is messed up, consisted that April in this version is an adult and she is one herself

@@Eternal_Sky_Tardis
No, I mean the 2012 cartoon that Nick had before Rise. Rise only pushed what that show started even further.
I can’t believe Doug Walker did that on camera
What hasn’t he not done on camera lol
He remembers it so you don’t have to
The wildest thing is that he's calling out Michael Bay for being racist, but like he doesn't realize he's looking super racist for even doing that shit. It's so funny, his lack of self-awareness.
Wow playboy magazine not just let you write an article but on a super big moment in pop culture that’s super cool
And playboy still being around is also amazing
Everytime i see the Bay version of TMNT, Im just reminded of the version of tmnt Sick Animation draws like in his Green Lover and Rolangelo videos.
I honestly would've liked to see Eric Sacks as Shredder in the film. He was strange and acted weird in the film so it made sense for him to be the Shredder, but we got a boring tool to be the Shredder instead
The biggest weeaboo ever
Honestly even back when I saw the designs in the first trailer. They didn't look that bad to me, I mean does everyone forget what a real life turtle's face look like ? Now make it look humanoid and you get this. The only I would change is maybe make them a little shorter and leaner except Raphael since he's suppose to be the muscle of the group and bam.
Shell Shocked is an underrated song.
My mentality was forever changed when my uncle was reading one of those holed cutout books as a kid.
That book sequence killed me
Though a lot of it was CGI, they actually did some live-action shoots for the Mountain Scenes in my hometown of Tupper Lake, which is in New York, just 6+ hours away from the City.

Pan. As a long-time subscriber. This video did not appear in my feed or recommendations. Glad to see it now.
At 7:26 finally someone made a reference to MAUS in a video.
I love your reference Pan
It's amazing how the first TMNT was such a nothing-burger because of all the course-correcting they had to do behind the scenes.
So when they actually decided to listen to the fans with the sequel, it was too little to late.
It sucks too, I legit loved the sequel, but hated this one
they even did that wrong since while they tried to follow the 80s cartoon more they still wanted to follow the things established in the first one ending with a mix bag that never commits to either side which in my opinion is even worse, like going to your favorite restaurant but only be allowed to eat bread
also they have the worst casey jones period

I gotta say dude as a long time viewer your aesthetic and production value is just awesome ❤

Thanks for reminding me that these movies existed, Pan.
You mean than more mature than the comics, since that’s how he learned in the og comic
Mutant Mayhem is anything but Mature
I love the inclusion of giraffesketball at the end. That video is hilariously accurate.
Consider that Ugly Sonic is now owned by Disney, you think they locked him in the Disney Vault only to let him out in a hypothetical Wreck-It Ralph 3?
Disney doesn't "own" ugly sonic. They had the rights to use the character for a single film. The ownership still falls under Paramount and Sega.
He’s not owned by Disney 🤦♀️

I don't know if anyone's ever brought up this point yet but… anglicizing "Oroku Saki" into "Eric Sacks" makes absolutely no sense when you really think about it.
It doesn't, it would be closer to something like "Erriku Sakushi", but I could totally see a writing room full of people who know nothing about Japanese coming up with that and thinking it was clever.

The problem with his name is that… "Oroku" is his _surname_ . This shows that the filmmakers don't know how East Asian naming conventions work!

Crazy to think they were gonna be aliens at one point
tmnt have always had aliens, they come from dimension X. reble taxi disappointed me for the first time today, but not knowing enough tmnt lore :( also splinter was originally a human ninja turned into a mutant rat, thats why he is human sized
I know Splinters origin changes depending on canon, but I thought since he started as a rat here, he should be compared to the other origins where he was a rat. Also I'm aware of aliens and dimension x and all the utrom stuff, I saw a bunch of the 2003 TMNT.

7:18 was the best part lmao
13:08 no, the anglicized version would be something along the lines of zack orock or olock since japanese names have the surname first and first name last
I feel bad for hating on these designs now. Honestly, they're alright but like, there are sooo many extra details that just are too much for me. They scream "concept art" but Bay's busy as fuck visuals make it clear that he saw how busy they were and said "NO, no second drafts, GIVE DONNY A MILLION GLASSES CUZ HE'S A NERRRD". It's just...a lot.
Yeah, the problem is like 1% how they look physically and 99% how overly visually busy they are.
@@ExaltedUriel It's the same problem as the original Bayformers before Bumblebee.
Oh great now I have to remember that this happened again
been awhile since ive watchd your vids and I gotta say i still absolutely adore your style of editing, humor and aesthetic of your vids
10:05 😂I think you mean the voice for raph not Mikey, that was bothering me
Interesting video but how did you mix up Michelangelo's voice actor and Raph? I mean that is a really big mistake there. Robbie Rist did not voice Raphael in the live action TMNT films he voiced Mikey. In the first movie that was an actor named Josh Pais who voiced Raphael.
Not sure, I THINK I googled his turtle and saw red and instead of orange. The script says Mikey but the graphics say Ralph
@@RebelTaxiIt's cool. Everyone makes mistakes. Big fan of your content by the way. Keep up the great work.
It’s crazy to think that at one point, the turtles were gonna be reimagined as aliens.
Honestly for me it's basically the same vibe as that superman flyby script where as a elseworld story or or as a story on its own its pretty fun but as a mainline adaptation no just fucking no
its neat to think that Robert Barone & the voice of Big Dog from Two Stupid Dogs voiced Kang in Out of the Shadows
(this was typed out before the end of the robbie rist text, so it turns out you brought up the same thing lol)
asides from that though, very good video!
Raped isn’t a swear word
This shit just raped my eyes, I've never read something so bad.
Genuinely really love your intro
Weird. I was just telling my friend (who's a huge TMNT fan) that Micheal Bay tried making them aliens.

I can respect that
