    The scary thing about the Emperor's speech is that it has a cruel logic behind it. People are born different so it's easy to argue that it is pointless to try and force fairness and equality. It's a idea that successful people can easily be pulled into; thinking that it would be unfair to you to force you to be equal with someone at a lower level than you.

    • @alizaidi2893
      @alizaidi2893 Před 3 lety +10

    • @Nostripe361
      @Nostripe361 Před 3 lety +70

      @@alizaidi2893 You are misunderstanding me. I am talking about how some people are born smarter than others. Or, as the emperor puts in his speech, swifter of foot then others.
      For example if you think of the world with RPG stats, everyone does not start out at an equal number. Some people have better stats in fields like luck or intelligence than their fellow men. This gives them an unfair advantage in things like being an investor or a scientist.
      It was this unfairness that lead to social Darwinism viewpoint that people like the Britannians believe in. Its a cruel argument that states the ideal that if you have an advantage over your fellow people, then it is only logical for you to use that advantage to your benefit; even if it hurts others who are less fortunate. And that there is nothing wrong with that cause that is just how the natural world works and who are we to stand in the way of progress and evolution.
      The issue I was stating is that it can make a lot of logical sense to someone hearing it if you disregard the more immoral parts of this belief structure. You reply only makes sense in a modern context where we are taught to care for others but to a person who views Social Darwinism as true what you say is illogical. Why should the successful care what happens to the losers. Its their fault they lost even if the board was stacked against them.
      I will also say, as a personal point, that I do find your viewpoint a bit too pessimistic. While it is easier to "Step on the backs of others" and a great many people do do that, not all successful people step on the backs of others.
      Some treat their work force great or give them morally appropriate compensation for their work. There are also some people who are successful outside of the corporate world like researchers or inventors who discover or invent great things in their homes or garages.
      While I do agree that no one becomes successful inside of a vacuum and requires some aid or resources provided from somewhere and/or someone else, I don't think everyone succeeds by standing on the backs of others. Some succeed by standing on the shoulders of giants.

      We've had people born capable of greatness from a very young age. There are people who ARE inherently more intelligent/smarter/intellectual than others. People are NOT born equal, nor are they created equal. Some are born with crippling genetic disorders like cerebral palsy, and some people are born with muscles that generate less fatigue toxins than the average human, making them "swifter of foot", as one could say.
      The human race is an exercise in diversity, an exercise in DIFFERENCE. It doesn't justify enslaving others, and it doesn't justify racism, but it's an inescapable fact, a part of the cold, harsh truth that we call reality.

    My hatred for Nina wasn't till she came back in R2, and more specifically during the Chinese Arc. It really shows how much she let her obsession to avenge Euphemia gets to her and showing an ugly side of her.
    Though one line does get to me, she accuses Kallen for pretending to be her friend. Even taking account of both audio and picture dramas, these two rarely interacted with each other. Not to mention her other obsession with science to make her this universe's Albert Einstein (I have my own issues that with this that relate to Code Geass' own history being a huge headache to understand, but I digress). I think this line would have hit nearly as hard as Nina's outburst to Milly (which gave insights to both those characters) if we had seen these two interact more. But I guess Nina has a different way of internalizing who is a friend and who isn't; which for an antisocial character, who may or may not have had a horrible experience in the ghettos, and a long time friend like Milly looking over her would have her view things differently.

      Kallen say she "hate" britannians and see some of them as monster, but she pretended to be britannian, to be their friends and classmate while considering herself as their enemy. isn't that evil too ? how will you react if you sudenly find out that one of your classmate was working for a terrorist organisation and fighting against your countrymen, her countrymen as well in a way ? that while she was smilling to your face, she was insulting and belittle you behind your back ? it is natural for the students of Ashford to feel betrayed because she did betray their trust

    • @strategicperson95
      @strategicperson95 Před 3 lety +9

      @@clementpetillot9383 while this is true; I still stand by Nina and Kallen having little interaction. 95% of Nina's on screen showing in R1 is with her face in a computer screen. And don't forget, Kallen was also able to distinguish between the everyday citizen of Britannia from those in higher positions of power after Narita.
      Not to mention, there is one fellow student that does understand Kallen's position and had one thought about that in said Chinese Arc.
      But as I said, someone from Nina's position probably interprets something like Friendship differently, like since the Student Council is mostly filled with a tight group of friends she feels safe. So I guess from that view, upon learning Kallen is a Black Knight and half-Japanese (or Eleven from Nina's view) that would be viewed as a betrayal.
      Still doesn't change R2s ugly side of her, willing to kill even a child through crushing them in a tomb, even risking more political/diplomatic issues/violations just to fulfill her obsession.

She had an Obsession that led to a Vendetta that led to a Mistake that led to a Breakdown that led to a Regret that led her to support the very person she originally had a vendetta against. But everyone just seems to clock out at the Breakdown and write her off as certifiably insane. Her insecurity led her to admire Euphemia, whose death drove her mad being the only person she ever looked up to (because Euphy was I think, all the things Nina was not but wanted to be), and then that grudge against Zero drove her to this much until she realized just how much destruction her insecurity and grudge caused….

I can believe it's happened but without seeing it for myself I can't connect or sympathize with her struggles. This whole telling, or rather implying instead of showing can be applied to many of the other side characters as well making them feel very underdeveloped. Secondly I'm not sure if Nina siding with Lelouch was suppose to be her redemption or attonement but it falls flat to me when you realize she went from serving one madman to serving another (yes I am talking about Lelouch). I also have a hard time believing she truly cared about her so called friends when she was willing to put their lives in danger on two separate occasions just to kill one man. If I was her friend I'd probably never want to talk or see her after that.

    Nina might be a racist, but in her case it's not rooted in a superiority complex; it's rooted in fear. As twisted and crazy as she is, it might have become more understandable if the writers had expanded on how she got that way. From my point of view, she seems afraid of the Japanese, and I think it stems from a traumatic event, rather than a manipulated upbringing.
    I actually feel pity for someone like her. She's psychologically damaged, and it prevents her from changing for the better. I think fans tend to throw the book at her excessively, and the fact that she's the least attractive female character in the series doesn't seem to help. People are naturally less likely to sympathize with a character that's considered ugly, and when compared to the other women in this series... yeah she's not exactly up there. Her whole crush on Euphy is just kind of a cherry on top the squick cake.
    I'm not trying to say she's a good character, but I think fans tend to slam her more heavily than she deserves. There's characters in this show that I hated far more than her, and to be honest, it's kind of hard to remember her without watching the show, at least in my case. I'm more detesting of Lohmeyer for being a hateful old witch who tried to start a second massacre, Bradley for being a barbarian who wanted to rape Kallen, and don't get me started on the Chinese Eunuchs. Nothing was more satisfying than seeing Xingke blast those monsters into oblivion.

    • @Kat-uj6rp

      Well, she's not ugly, it's just that her style of dress doesn't suit her, when you see her in the second season with a new style of hair and clothes gives her a more refined air, she just lacked confidence, maybe her friends should have been more attentive but good mistake of any human, even so, after seeing how her xenophobia and her idolization of Euphy led her to create a bomb dedicated to the princess made me hate her, sometimes I wonder how she would have reacted if:
      1- She realized that Zero was Lelouch, who is one of the few friends she has at school.
      2- That Lelouch is a very dear brother to Euphemia to the point that because of hers, along with Susaku and Nunally, they are the reasons for her to create the SAZ.
      3-That Lelouch killed her because she was going to suffer from her because of the slip of Lelouch's fucking Geass.
      She would probably be worse off than Susaku, no matter how you want to put it to me, how fucking convenient that the Geass failed at that precise moment just when she said "kill all Japanese" as an example. In my point of view it was too forced. If they planned to make the protagonist kill his beloved sister, at least they would have done it in a more natural way as he had already been warned to put on the lens but it was defective. Someone does not come with it is not possible because we could see something similar with Shirley but the misfortune was better executed.
      But I'm with you that I don't think she is the most disgusting of this series, I hate Lelouch's parents more, those damned ones were not only heinous rulers, they didn't even bother to take care of the family they said they loved, my heart broke see as in reality those who are Shneizel, Cornelia, Euphimia, Marybell and Clovis if they had love for Marianne with her children, especially that they had a special affection for the main character for being very special and all that soured because Charles and Marianne left Lelouch and Nunally at the worst time and place, as a consequence the brothers hated the Japanese to the extreme because they thought they were killing their poor little brothers while Lelouch turned sour and also created the idea that his brothers were bastards narcissists who crushed anyone to get the position of emperor/empress of Britannia.
      Compared to what other characters did like the eunuchs or V.V, Nina was just the equivalent of a monkey with a gun

      Most racism is based on fear. Most of the racists arent superior. They are in fact inferior amongst their society and even to those they want to believe is inferior because they are too inferior. Most racists in the US are uneducated rednecks working blue collar jobs or none.

    For me, she feels like a highly unnecessary character and is the only time that I am annoyed watching the show. Why? Every character in Code Geass has a believable implied or explicit sense of morality and ideals, except Nina. Nina always came unintentionally racist, xenophobic, crazed and unsympathetic. Why is she like this? Well...she was "inappropriately and physical harassed" by Japanese men when she was younger has PTSD triggers despite having the financial means of getting the best therapy possible.

    as a Black person (literally a person of color) I never really liked her- honestly her character made me realize uncomfortable. Not because of her *cough* obsession with Euphy (though that was somewhat disturbing on its own) but just her blatant xenophobia, that simply hit too close to home with me

      I believe that’s one of the things I enjoyed of the show, not because I agree with their xenophobia, but because the discrimination of the Japanese and lack of care to even cause genocide on episode one to clean up an experiment gives the show an extra _sauce_ I don’t support racism in any way, but in a show about rebelling against a nation who is absolutely horrible makes it more interesting

    Honestly i never felt hatred for nina. I just found apathy and mild amusement. I also find it interesting that the arguement over equality vs inequality is usually a feelings vs feelings debate. Yes everyone is inequal, no no one deserves to be equal, does that mean you can or should treat people like crap? No.

    I think you're looking way too deep into the homophobia thing. Milly is the most popular girl in the school and she acts super gay all the time and everyone basically just thinks "oh, that's our Milly".
    Also, Nina is completely open about her homosexuality in season 2, and Kanon easily makes implications about him and Schneizel.
