- OKPAN’s Tribal Histories Series presents a webinar by Dr. Ian Thompson, Tribal Historic Preservation Officer for The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. Every biweekly installment in this series features representative(s) from a different Tribal Nation. Each community has their own distinct histories and practices, so by giving each Tribe their own space we hope to highlight their diverse perspectives.

This is the first in the series I've watched and it is impressive. As my wife (Chickasaw/Choctaw) said, Dr Thompson was able to put SO much information into this hour and still kept it interesting and easy to follow. Nice graphics, too. Can't wait to visit the new cultural center. Yakoke, Paige and Leeann!
My Granny is Choctaw and you guys do not look like Granny😮
@@nonyabidness1838 they are mix-blood Choctaw thats why. Some light complected Choctaw are married 2 full-blood Choctaw, so they bring up the blood degree of their children by marrying Choctaw with a higher blood degree. Doing it this way ensures Choctaw dont go extinct.
@@nonyabidness1838 Why does being a light skin Choctaw upset U? They R mix-blood Choctaw & R family & belong 2 Choctaw nation. Every Choctaw has relatives that R part White & don't like blacks thinking they aren't Choctaw just Bcuz they look white. They share same relatives as Choctaw do. Many Choctaw had white babies.
@@stormy-le6pb 🤣 go away with all your deception.
@@nonyabidness1838UR the 1 thats deceptive, insinuating that there's no light skin Choctaw, when Choctaw been having babies with whites 4 500 yrs. Havent U noticed Choctaw always vote N mix-bloods 4 president. They prefer them Bcuz they seem 2 get a college education. Light skin Choctaw R proud of Choctaw
Yakoke, your presentation was very informative. I am a direct descendant of Louis Durant. Louis, Pierre, Fisher, Dixon, Mollie Reese Durant.
The Choctaw presence is very loud where I live in Louisiana. Streets, rivers, lakes and my Grandma. My Grandma grew up speaking french but she did teach me a Choctaw game with pecans. I saw a similar game with elk teeth in Montana which makes me think it is a wide spread native game
What's the game?
@@sonusanimus3987 Each player starts with the same number of pecans. you hold an unknown amount of pecans in your hands and the other person has to guess how many you’re holding. If you guess lower the holder gives you the number of the difference and if you guess higher you have to give the holder the difference. If you guess exactly then you get all the ones in the holder’s hand
@@davidcanatella4279 yokoke!
@@sonusanimus3987 Sorry i thought i sent a reply but i can’t find it. The game starts with the players getting the same number of pecans. One player holds an unknown number hidden in their hands. If the other player guesses lower the guesser has to give the difference to the holder. If they guess higher than the holder has to give the difference. If they guess exactly then the guesser gets the hand full. I may have lower and higher guesses turned around but that’s the basic idea. I haven’t played since before i was twelve so i may have mixed up the rules
Ian is awesome, I met him at the Choctaw cultural meeting in Phoenix. His display was next to my table where I was selling my Choctaw crafts. He had a lot of info on the Choctaw traditional religion.
I would love to go in Phoenix next time, my ancestor is Chief Sorrel Horse.
My Great-Grandmother was at least half Choctaw. She lived to be 100 years old. She grew up in Northern Texas. I never met her, and didn't know she was native American until I was in my 40's. Grandma never talked about her heritage. During her generation I think it was taboo to not talk about it. I'm still learning more about her heritage. Grandma told me that my Great-Grandfather fought for Texas during the Civil War. I also learned that the Choctaw allied themselves to the Confederacy because of their deep family ties..I hope to live a long and good life so that I can learn more about my family ancestry in Texas.
Thank you for your presentation.
I really enjoyed this presentation and learned a. lot from it. Thank you.
Nice presentation. Dr. Thompson, can you recommend a good book for Choctaw history? My great-grandmother was a Mississippi Choctaw. I'd love to learn more about my history.
anyone in chat have any info on William Beam and Hannah Choctaw? Id appreciate it greatly.
Hello thank you for the information and video.
So one day I was praying and meditating for the safety and healing of Earth and I had a voice spoke through me very loud and very slow and it said CHOOOCTAAAAW. I felt a very peaceful and very powerful energy even as I'm writing this now it's bringing back the same feeling and I'm getting teary-eyed. I obviously have a connection, would like to learn more. Suggestions?

The black Choctaw were granted citizenship after the civil war, First Nations owned slaves and were given tribal rights after
@@liltexazboi361 All freedmen wouldn't even have same DNA that connects them together as family, since all belong 2 different African nations, but Choctaw have same DNA that connects them together as belonging 2 the big Choctaw family. Blacks can't B Choctaw unless his ancester was Choctaw.
Anyone have change for a $5?
Exactly!
People forget that not all Choctaw will marry & have babies with just Choctaw. I hate 2 admit it but there are more mix-blood Choctaw than there are full-blood.
@dedication666 UR a racist black. B4 whites came, Choctaw were 100% N.A., but after whites came, they been intermarrying, so there R many mix-blood Choctaw that look white, but they didn't give Choctaw $5, they were born N the tribe & R family & belong 2 clans.
@dedication666 Even with the right change, Choctaw won't accept UR $$. UR not blood related 2 Choctaw that were Choctaw 4 over 10,000 yrs & U think U can use Ur change 2 buy Choctaw clanship? No clan will accept a non-Choctaw. No Choctaw knows of a $5 Indian.
Blacks are hypocrits. DNA proved every A.A. has on average 10-24% European DNA, so all blacks have white man genes in them & not every N.A. N America has white man genes N them, since there are still many N.A. that are 100% N.A. All blacks are part white, but not all N.A.s are & blacks hate it when they see N.A.s that are part white, when they themselves are part white.
I am Choctaw thank you for this message. God Bless all .
I’m damn near 100% sure you are not a real Choctaw
@@chefbay3943 She don't have to be a full Choctaw to be a Choctaw. Remember Choctaw been mixing with whites since the 1700's, more so with white than with blacks.
@@chefbay3943 I can't understand why blacks can't understand that Choctaw do have babies with Whites & have been doing that for 400 yrs now, just about all Choctaw have a white ancestors if they aren't a fullblood Choctaw & some Chctaw do have babies with blacks too, I'm not saying some don't, but many whites have Choctaw blood & R proud of it.
@@chefbay3943 Farrah Fawcett, Ruth McClanahan, Roy Rogers, Billy Bob Thorton, Oral Roberts, (2020 Miss Oklahoma) Mariah Davis. They all look white but R part Choctaw & there R millions more of whites that have Choctaw blood spread thoughout the world. Some dont want to claim it but others do.
This guy is,the so called five dollars indian!
U don't know his family. They are Choctaw & he's a mix-blood Choctaw. Blacks sure hate it when they see light complected Indians as if Choctaw are not allowed 2 have babies with white ppl.
His family are Choctaw & he's a mix-blood Choctaw. Choctaw nation keeps records of Choctaw people & if he didn't have a Choctaw ancestor, he couldn't have gotten that job & his wife is a full-blood Choctaw. By marrying her, he brought his Choctaw blood back up N his children.
I am interested. . .
5:00 does this apply to those associated with the Freedmen? I’ve been trying to reconnect to the nation , as my family in the past was disconnected (not on their accord), with much difficulty. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Look up the Choctaw & Chickasaw Freedmen Association. Along with the Freedmen descendants of the Five Tribes.
Love it. I'm one eighth Choctaw. My 2nd great grandmother arrived in 1903. Her name was Leona Thompson.
Great content, thanks so much!
How come Oklahoma doesn’t recognize the Chahta BLACK skinned, original native American Indians? How come every time I look at information on Choctaw tribes in Oklahoma, the only photos of physical people that I ever see are the people that look like they are of Asian, Mexican, Mongolian descent? You can easily CZcams search “chahta Chief” and see many videos of Chief, running horse, speaking about the history of the tribe. And when you go through the Oklahoma Indian museum, you do not see any black native tribes listed. In fact, there is a separate museum somewhere in Oklahoma that houses the freedman artifacts, photos, and history and many of the tribes at the time were not freed slaves they were the original black native people that were there before the Asian Mongolian phenotype of people came down from the Canada and mixed in with the black Chahta, as well as before the Mexican Indians came and mixed with them from the south. To not include the black natives in any of these photos or museums is erasure by omission and you should be both held accountable and shamed
😂😂preteindians gone wild
@@choctawwarrior1587 who you? You are the one with a fake ass name
Chahta acknowledges there R mix-blood Chahta thats mixed with African. the newest Choctaw princess is part A.A. Choctaw didn't discriminate against her just because she has A.A. N her ancestry. She won fair and square.
@chefbey3943 Just about every Choctaw has a relative that is part A.A. & part White,so there will B many different shades within the Choctaw nation from: white (mix-blood White), tan, brown, dark brown & chocolate (mix-blood A.A.). Choctaw R a mix of shades & R all related 2 each other N clans that is a part of large family .
@@stormy-le6pb wrong! Chief queen Warhorse does not claim any type of racial mix. To claim that everybody in a tribe has already been mixed with some type of black and white, without any kind of proof is to purposely erase some people out of existence who are already here with a normal black skin complexion that is not mixed with any Africans or whites. Many of us have records going way back to before the Dawes rolls, and many of the people on there were not mixed with any kind of white. Directly on the Dawes Rolls itself, there are a lot of Black people who do not show any kind of racial mix, and that was just at the end of the 1800s. So to say that there can’t be any full blooded black native Americans because they were all somehow mixed in with some white people is to purposely put out propaganda that you have no backing to.
1894 was when the Dawes Rolls were taken, some people on there are black. And that is only about four-6 generations from many of us today. To tell me that we do not have about six generations of Black people mixing with other Black people is asinine. My grandma‘s grandma and her grandma were all black. Same thing on my paternal side. We’ve been black since the rolls came out.

Oh my fkn gawd y'all act like Chahta people are all the same color and didn't mix in with many many other tribes all over the gd world. Like we've been here since before 1500 BC get tf over this racist shit for real. I hate this. Its the same shit everywhere. Because I'm a rare form of albino and look unique I don't get to be part of the culture and heritage of literal actual blood??? @@summersky6495Choctaw aren't black.
@@summersky6495 if it’s just because we mixed together, then why do they purposely leave us out in damn near every photo and damn near every artifact in every museum that they have around the goddamn nation? If they mixed in with some of the blacks, then there should definitely be some blacklisted here. They did not breed out the blacks, the blacks are still out here in the world, living their lives. And in many cases, they purposely don’t give them, recognition, resources, and sovereignty. So every black person fighting for this has a purposeful reason to do so.
Here blacks go again. Blacks can't stand it when they see light complected Choctaw.
