Trust your intuition NO MATTER WHAT. Be focused and determined. If you manage not to betray yourself, you will be fine even though life will be hard MANY times before you get 46. Take good care of yourself and the rest will follow. I'm learning all that a little bit too late ❤🙏

My terrible mother-who I moved away from at 17, that or I was going to commit suicide, but, I let her in my life in my 20’s, biggest mistake-
is dying and even in her death
she has helped turn my
four children against me many many years ago but they of course are
adults
in their 30s and have children and they’re all hateful and
wish that I was dead,

I mom was 39, my dad was 42, I was 17 when we left Bosnia after the war. Our home in Bosnia was completed just couple of years before all the atrocities. My parents lost everything. We did not speak English and we arrived in the US without money. We MADE it. My parents worked hard to make life better for my brother and I. That was the hardest time of our lives and probably as bad as the war itself. Everything that happened after that in our lives was a piece of cake :)

Pardon, it very well could be me and my own upbringing with adventurous parents who I very well could see doing something this into their 70s even but 50s (to me) is so young, agile, and able - not just in heart - but in age. It’s funny to me to hear this like they’re senior citizens. Fifties is _SO_ young (again, to me.) I do agree with you. So great for them and their family.
@@noble604 I'm saying this because I know 50 year-olds who are very much stuck in their routine and have been having the same holidays over and over for 15 years... so these people surely wouldn't have the courage to move across the country, let alone entire OCEANS ! Also, some people at 50 have conditions that would just prevent them from such a drastic change. So, yes, I agree, "young" is all relative but being 50 isn't being in your prime either ahah likely meaning you're well past the first half of your life.

I’ve literally just done this. Moved my whole family, 3 kids, dog, cat and three truck fulls of stuff (1000s of books) after living 22 years in the UK to Denmark. I had a really big panic about it all last week. This video really saved me. It’s so inspiring. I’m 46 and I just feel I want to keep moving. I really questioned myself last week… but it feels like the right decision.

So, I’m from Venezuela. I went on an exchange program to Russia when I was 17, came back to Venezuela, moved to Spain when I was 20, lived in Barcelona for many years, and recently I move to Berlin. Every f**ing time I watch a video about your parents it makes me want to cry because you because you're the most heartwarming people ever. If the laundry machine issue happened in my family, it would produce a lot of bad interactions and feelings. But you just had a laugh and had it clean. And it shows me that life could be so much more

I didn’t move out of the USA to Europe. My story is similar in the sense
We moved out of our 4 bdrm 3 bath,2car Garage , pool in backyard home in NJ and bought a small townhouse in SC on the coast.
I’ve lived in NJ my whole life and would never consider myself adventurous. But! We are both 55 and have 3 kiddos. Leaving behind purging. It is like a spiritual awakening. Refreshing.

I'm in my late fifties and permanently leaving the United States in four weeks to join my wife in Bogotá. I can't tell you how much I needed to see this video. I especially appreciate the part where your parents talk about not trying to take on the whole mountain at once. Words to live by. I also connected with this video because I just happened to have been a 14 year old kid on vacation with my father and grandmother in Buenos Aires the day the military staged a coup and took over the country. Fascism happens and it can happen anywhere.

I emigrated from Argentina to Italy to get my citizenship at 50, then to Spain. My husband (English), my daughter and her husband and I live in Galicia, Spain now. The best decision we've made in our lives. Not without the expected challenges, especially when there's bureaucracy in the middle. But, man! this is the best life!

So many Americans grew up in the throes of a trauma-inducing family. Much of this has to do with maniacal religion foisted upon children who are in no way ready for it. The US has no social safety net. We have massively bad philosophies projected onto all of us about constantly pulling ourselves up by our bootstraps----but for what? So we can have a life of unending consumerism? I guess what I"m saying is: I hear you!! 🙂

As a man in my fifties who has been actively questioning whether or not my current life is the one that I want, and fighting excuses like, “I’m too old/single/poor/unclear/afraid to make big changes like moving abroad,” I found this video perfectly timed and concretely inspiring. I hit 50 and realised there's more to life than what I was doing,eat,sleep,work,repeat. I sold my few possessions,quit my job and brought a motorhome,then hit the road. I've been travelling for 8 years now,I work when I need money then move on. This might not be right for you,but don't leave it until its too late to find out what is right for you.
Not yet 50 and I’ve been feeling the same for a while now. Im seriously planning to move from US in the next couple of years, hopefully before 2024.
I’m spending the next two years putting things in place. Getting rid of things, setting up my mom in a new home, arranging accommodations, feeling out jobs, etc.
The reality is that you can create a life, get work wherever you you land. It may be difficult for a while, but the challenge is worth it and it’s a heck of a lot better than monotony of my current life.

Hello, Nate -- my wife and I just went through exactly the same process. We moved to Portugal from the US after selling and giving away everything that we had (we recently retired). We have settled in Portugal on the Silver Coast, just outside of Caldas da Rainha. If your parents are looking for a potential place to settle in Portugal, we can't recommend this area enough. We'd be happy to show them around Caldas da Rainha and Obidos if they are interested.

I can identify so much with what your parents went through. At 54, my wife and I sold everything and jumped into an RV … and lived, worked, and traveled full time in the RV … for 12 years. I’m 66 now and expect to leave the US in the near future.

Omg, I’m in my 50’s and have been dreaming of moving to Europe! My father was French and most of my family on my father’s live there. I was worried I was too old to make such a move. So inspiring, thank you! Yes, you know who you are and the material things are much less important.
My wife, son and I moved to Spain from California 4.5 years ago and it has been the best thing we ever did. There is something to be said for getting out there and enjoying a different life. Great job by your parents having the courage to simply go for it. The uncomfortable moments start to become fewer and fewer. The crazy holiday fireworks stop being and issue when you know when they are and you can use it as a reason to go enjoy a weekend getaway in the mountains or in a different beautiful spot. We are almost the same age as your parents so if they need friends in Europe that went through something similar they have friends in España.
You need lots of money to do this. They made tons of money in the USA. Also, do they speak the language? In the USA, we spend huge amounts of money to teach immigrant children to speak English, but not one penny to teach American born kids another language, until it's too late. High school is too late. Wish I was this couple. I'm jealous!

Wow! As a psychologist I am thinking how amazing it would be if all children could have parents like your mom and dad! I really mean it Nathaniel. They sound so loving (critical for good emotional development!) supportive and they have enormous curiosities and that is so healthy! I think it is so fantastic that your parents have made a base on Portugal and can travel. I personally love the purging and downsizing! I more minimal sometimes - the clearer my mind is at times. I have my favourite things - only what I need - I don't blow money on a a lot of unnecessary things - and I have a nice Vancouver, BC, Canada home - but I do try to downsize all the time so I am not completely encumbered by things I don't need. Hey what do your parents do? I hope it is okay to ask. They mention they have clients. I just haven't seen what that is - not trying to be nosy. I think we never free ourselves completely of attachments - unless we are the Dalai Lama perhaps!! Lol!! It is so difficult to give up attachments. It is a constant mindful practice! 🙂 I find it interesting how your dad said at the time of making this video he was needing some "comforts" - he is honest - it's hard to give up the comforts of life! Youth is a mindset! The things your parents do should help their minds stay so busy that they are less at risk of diseases like Dementia. Change and being able to "adapt" and learn really new things is so protective and healthy for brain health!! Your parents are terrific!! Their fight against discomfort is amazing and enlightening. I can feel your dad's desire for more space! That is so hard to give up yet a couple doesn't really need a lot of physical space! I enjoyed this video so much and I am so glad they are now closer to you so more visiting is possible. Portugal is lovely! I have been quite a few times to study how they deal with people who struggle with addiction. They are so progressive!! Hey it's terrific your dad has started his own CZcams video channel. Recently I got a new job that made me move to Portugal, and all my family from one day to another said: "All right we are going too, in a maximum of 2 years we are all together in Portugal". My parents are in their 60s, and felt exactly like you, it is surprising how much bravery you need to embrace a new journey at this age, and change your perspective for the future, that's awesome!!! This video is great! I have lived in the same house for 25 years and I want to move but the thought of leaving the house that I raised my family in and starting over is sometimes overwhelming but also exciting at the same time. Your parent’s honesty about everything is refreshing.

I was in Europe for three weeks this past month for vacay. I’ve been back two weeks now and I never imagined to feel such a connection during my time away, especially in Italy. The idea of moving out of the US always lingered but I didn’t know when, why, or how. Being back I felt sort of displaced. I cried a few times because I do feel a sadness being back and everything tends to remind me of my time there. It was so amazing. Made me realize that maybe it’s possible and time for me to really think about it on how I can make it happen and succeed on this move. Believe me when I say I started googling about it. 😅 There’s really nothing holding me back except being comfortable with this being all I know and my career that keeps me financially stable. The process seems a little daunting but I’m sure it’s worth it! This video inspired me even more. Life is just so beautifully different everywhere and I want to experience more of that. Thank you for this video. Truly inspiring!
This is exactly how I felt when I came back from Spain 2 years ago. I just don’t feel like this is my home. Maybe it’s my ancestors crying out for their ancestral home, idk.
Welcome to Portugal! I strongly suggest Tomar as a place to live, it is absolutely beautiful and tranquil. As a youngster, just barely 13 yrs of age, I, my sis and my parents (in their 40's) left everything in Portugal and moved to the USA. I never forgave them, until they got sick and passed away. Now at 55 I decided it was time to leave the rat race and finally come home. It's been an adjustment. Amazing the amount of stuff I had and brought with me. Not easy for a single person with some serious health issues. Almost 5 years after I am still giving away boxes, bags and bags if clothes, 250 pairs of shoes, books, knick knacks, pot pans you name it. The feeling of purging to lightness is amazing, and so was this move, the best decision of my life. Be happy 🤗🙏❤️🇵🇹❤️

Im from Coimbra, and actually that party you guys got in the middle of is the most important event for students in all Portugal but especially in Coimbra. Its fun, they are celebrating the fact they graduated University, but i get it, its more for the students than for the population, and its gets messy at times.

Three years ago, me and my parents (also in their 50s, also had to work really hard to build their life in Brazil) moved from Rio de Janeiro to Porto, and we got rid of everything we had, even our house. According to them its still the best decision they have ever made :) props to us and our adventurous parents!

I was calmly eating my lunch when watching this and then heard your parents were from Argentina and I said WHAT?! It truly explains so much... how open minded you are, that itch to get out of a place that's no longer serving you. That's something a lot of us can relate to these days in Argentina... I love how brave they are to make the move, regardless of age! I can see my parents doing the same in the near future.
Literally a similar story with my parents. They emigrated from Uruguay to Canada, and now I'm thinking about moving to Europe as well! Your parents remind me so much of mine, with the latino spirit of adventure and the pursuit of life but with so much wisdom to share! Awesome video Nate! :)

That's where I would like to be as well, Humboldt is more my style. It's still a huge ordeal wherever you go, I must consider a rare disease to take care of so moving overseas is nearly impossible without that support. Loved this. Hubby and I always talk about leaving Australia for Italy one day. However we do realise the grass isn’t always greener even on the other side of the world. Maybe we will get there but are thankful for the lifestyle and overall quality of life we have in OZ including fantastic weather. For some reason great climate is a must for my mental health. Your Parents are very inspiring though.
Your parents are absolutely lovely and VERY intelligent in their approach to life. And you're right: It's a balancing act of fighting against boredom but needing comfort. I really hope you engage your parents and their journey as a regular part of this ongoing show.

Im from Argentina and i feel so proud of your parents and the life they made, escaping from the dictatorship must have been so painful but they kept that spark and love thats iconic of us as a people. The ammount of love and inspiration for real change in the world you feel and act upon must have roots on your Argentinean blood for sure 💙💙💙

@@AyushSharma-xg7td im located in Argentina so i cant speak for those leaving the US but i think millenials of the working class are experiencing the first economic crisis of their lives, and its a pretty cruel country for the poor and those struggling. Thats when you start to see people leave, in exile in my opinion cause its the lack of opportunities that pushes you out of your homeland. Although it can be experienced as a free choice in a personal level, its always with great cost

Wow your parents are so inspirational. My own parents don't even leave the neighbourhood, ever. My dad stopped driving because he didn't like travelling. Our most far-flung holiday was to Amsterdam (I'm from the UK), and all they did was sit in a mall.

I love their honesty - we are in our 50’s too and yes, you know yourself better but complacency is easy - and chasing your dreams, discomfort and all, isn’t. They are brave.
Don't have to be brave if you're "financially secure". Let alone when you pick a relatively cheap city (2nd~3rd tier) in a relatively cheap country. As a matter of fact, it IS the safe/chicken choice.
Let's be honest here, if it was a matter of chasing dreams, Porto is pretty low down the list. Lisbon, Madrid... Vienna, Paris would be better "dream material". But too much $ = discomfort so they opted for what's easy.
Why am I commenting? There's a darker aspect to this story. It's unfair competition for the local worker. Housing market should be protected for local buyers as the necessity that it is.
I dislike people who take advantage of other people's lesser means by exploiting the financial difference in both countries. (i.e. you make $ in the US then use that to snatch a house from a relatively poor country.) Imagine buying up whole acres of land from some poor african country, effectively forcing people there to relocate.
Foreigners buying properties is eerily close to neo-colonialism.

@@Untilitpases What you describe happens many places, including USA. Foreign investors are buying-up USA housing & commercial properties in tight expensive markets such as Bay Area of California, many paying cash. Some 'investment properties' then sit vacant with their absentee-owners in another country. But 'locals' can't afford to purchase, rents are sky-high, salaries low comparative to cost of housing and basics of living, and more & more USA people are living on the streets -- it's epidemic in California Bay Area and Los Angeles.
@@lunacatfish I know. Colonialism isn't geo-restricted. It's just capitalism doing its thing. The world needs social programs/subsidies to provide property to working people en masse, something akin to what baby boomers got in the UK.
As I get on in years, I'm of the opinion capitalism needs resets/jubilee-s periodically. It is the best system we got, but it needs some arbitrage. If not, small differences accumulate & compound towards greater and greater inequalities until it gets into a late stage that starts tearing the social fabric apart. It gets more problematic to enforce as the world grows more globalised, and corporate law more convoluted.
Lobbying, justice system, housing, taxes, worker conditions: these are all areas that affect everyone, yet are shaped by few.
Meeting your parents explains so much about you as a person. I think we rarely realize how much we are like our parents and take on from them. I am also a big fan of my parents 😂 so I can relate. I wouldn't want to live too far away from them either.

I resonated with this so much. I’m in my 40s and my family can’t understand why I want to leave the US and not come back. It’s difficult to make big life changes but the journey through it all is what turns an ordinary life into an extraordinary one. Your parents are truly inspirational. 💗

I can relate to your parents’ feeling so much, since a year ago my wife and I did the same. We sold ever we owned in Spain, and moved to Sweden. For me it was like a natural thing to do, since I am 28, but to my wife, who is twenty years older than me was quite something, and I totally understand. But there’s something that is for sure, we wouldn’t go back, and we are supper happy with the change we’ve made. Congrats to your parents and I wish the best for them❤️✨
