The Analogues Interview - How They Became the Best Beatles Tribute Band Ever

  • "The Analogues decided to start a mission to perform all six of these albums in their entirety. Did the world need another tribute band? Probably not. But The Analogues are anything but a typical tribute band. Their mission: to play those iconic, never-performed Beatles albums live - after all. Integral, one by one. No wigs, no costumes, but an obsessive attention to authentic musical details, using the same vintage instruments, amplifiers, sounds, live strings and horns.
‘Just the music’ as recorded by The Beatles in the Sixties. Only live."

Playing the Beatles music people said was ‘unplayable live’. To play the White Album, complete live, is a mammoth project to take on. The Analogues took on the project and won. They sound note perfect.

These guys are spectacular. I traveled from Texas to Amsterdam to see them and it was well worth the expense. They heard I was coming and invited me to come see their sound check and also to the after party. They couldn't have been nicer to me. I was fortunate to host Diederik in my home here in Chapala, Mexico last Friday. We invited around 30 friends and neighbors and we had a blast listening to him play a (borrowed) guitar and my piano. It has never sounded so good. What an honor and what a blast. Can't wait to hear the entire group live one day. I'm the meantime, thankful for CZcams.

Excellent interview!! I discovered these guys early last year and have been a fan since. The utter detail they put into recreating all the Beatles works that they do is just amazing in and of itself. From buying instruments from that era to recreate the sound, to the amount of homework that they have done in breaking down how the songs were constructed, played, and recorded speaks volumes about them. Hopefully one day they will be able to come to the US to play. If not, I suspect I will be making a trip to the Netherlands to see one of their productions in the next year or two. Once again, a great interview, and kudos to a fellow Texan!!

I personally do not have anything but a Toyota Corolla to play a CD on; but when their CD comes out, I'm buying one. However ... the real stars of this band, are the mixing engineers. Good grief. I owned a tall Leslie and wanted so badly to play guitar through it, but termites got it before I could find a preamp!!

Yeah, I love The Beatles and The Analogues, and it would be nice if they would come to America eventually. They are European though, so that's how that goes. I found the Analogues close to 4 years ago maybe, and I've always been amazed at what they do and what they've done. This interview's inspired me to buy all their DVD's just to have. Just my way to support the efforts of the boys. I did like the interview but I thought you did ask a dumb question or two. I'm surprised you didn't ask them, "How did you find America?" But other than that, thanks for the interview to get the word out about the band. Nobody I know besides myself and the people I've told about them, know about them.

I was not a big Beatles fan but I had all the albums. But when it came time to sit and make reel to keel tapes with select bands. Not a lot of Beatles made it on my tapes. But the 50's through the mid 80's the diversity of music was enormous mainly due to all the college and stand alone FM stations. Then the gig corporation guys started. buying up the independent stations and music became repetitive. One band would have a hit, And for the next year or so. Everything you hear would sound the same. Today I perk up and come alive when I hear the Beatles. Because they were a unique band. At a time when most bands wanted to be so.

hmmm, Following up on Beatles' lore, I'm wondering IF the band has ever played in Vlodrop, Holland? I ask this because, following Patty Boyd and George's lead, I've been practicing TM for 51 straight years, and even worked on staff at Maharishi International University - here in Fairfield, Iowa. I know people who work at MERU - Vlodrop - on staff. Often I'd view some of Maharishi's 'talks' that would come to the MIU Video Department - FROM Vlodrop, Holland. I've always been grateful to Patty and George, John, and these days, Paul and Richie for continuing to quietly lead by example. Yoko, Sean, Julian, Paul (and his grown adult offspring), and Ringo still meditate after all these decades. The late, Cynthia Lennon, also continued her practice. Paul and Ringo have volunteered their time and services to the David Lynch Foundation, of bringing relief to veterans with PTSD, Women, inner city youth, the homeless, and many more people in need of inner healing. In short, the experiences of 'transcending' are very, very real - inner peace, creative-spark, and balance; especially in these times of sheer craziness. Per, the White Album - those songs were written during the Rishikesh TM Teacher-Training course in India: ''Dear Prudence'' (Prudence Farrow - still teaching TM, decades later); ''Bungalo Bill'' - one of the course participants who actually shot a wild tiger there, to which Maharishi chastised him, ''Killing is killing, period.''
At MIU, I once sat down with an Art Professor, Geoffrey Baker, who had been on that Rishikesh course in '68. Over lunch, I asked Geoffrey, who was quite up in age then, about his memories of Rishikesh. He cut me off, and would not talk about it. He was tired, obviously, of its ''pop'' nature, as the shallow press reported. This was a serious Teacher-training course, after all; and with long, long ''rounding'' (long meditation sessions). It was one of John's many 'out-there' friends, Magic Alex, a supposed electronic ''genius'' (he wasn't), who brought hard booze and drugs to ''save'' the Beatles from . . . discovering their inner creative Selves. Cynthia, years later, confirmed, it was Magic Alex that ruined the 'vibe' of that pioneering course - attended by a huge number of musicians, artists, and ''normal'' people. The Beach Boys were there, Donovan (who has visited Fairfield several times, along with Paul's son, James).
THANK YOU SO MUCH, MR. TROUT for this exceptional interview. I watch/listen to The Analogues often on YT. Their Abbey Road, live performance at Abbey Road Studios just knocked my socks off. As you say, the band's choreographed changing of instruments and equipment was awesome. I, too, am wondering about the band's varying 'sound' - live - in person at differing performance venues. As these two guys report, Diederik and Felix, their audio guys are doing a spectacular job under difficult and varied circumstances. I for one, am grateful to finally be able to hear what the original guys could have, would have sounded like - live - IF they'd chosen to play live again at 'select' venues. We'll never know, but, MAC is phenomenal with his band; as is RINGO's touring band. And, so are THE ANALOGUES !! Oh, one last thing - The band from Russia you're talking about is, 'Leonid & Friends' - and they are also phenomenal, because Russia has always produced well-trained musicians. Actually, 'Leonid & Friends Band' has BOTH Russian & Ukrainian musicians in the band. Look at what Russian musicians accomplished, during their collaborations with Cuban musicians - in Cuba, decades ago; adding to Cubans' innate love of Afro-Cuban music. (Listen to just two - of many now - phenomenal jazz pianists, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, and Chuco Valdes - and their intricate 'technique': how did they develop it? And with American jazz artists who have been touring and participating with Cuban musicians (a jazz pianist friend of mine has visited there and played with these musicians. Chuck Smith just raves about ''my hero'', Chucho.)

Most everything good that everyone is saying in these comments is irrefutable. These guys are truly amazing. Full stop. But for me something needs to be said to those who balk at listening to a tribute band' (although I mention below why I don't think the Analogues ARE a 'tribute band'). This is a very natural hesitation for anyone who deeply loves and respects the Beatles music. For whom no one could EVER compare to them and anyone who 'covers' their art should be dismissed out of hand. I get it. I'm one of those people. There have only been a handful of musicians who've covered any of their songs in a sympathetic and decent way over the years. Those who have tried and failed have done so because they either didn't bring the spirit of the song into it or it was so wildly off that they changed the entire song into something totally different. And, well - they aren't the Beatles anyway. A fools errand to even try. But the Analogues are something completely unexpected. They are like 'reality artists' whose beauty is found in not only how faithfully they bring forward the notes, sounds, timings and spirit of these songs but how they sustain this fidelity throughout the albums they cover. Someone said the Analogues are like an orchestra playing a Beethoven symphony - who no one would accuse of 'covering' - to which I agree. To those people who hate 'tribute bands' I say 'give them a try'. You might react like me and discover the Analogues have added to, not subtracted from, the mystery and wonder of the Beatles.

I enjoyed the interview, but I have to say that it's such a typical American host thing. The host talks far too fast and too much, interrupts, overtalks, at times doesn't seem to listen and it really detracts from the interview.
The host needs to realise that the guests should do 80% of the talking and the host 20% of the listening.
In this video it seems to be the other way around.

Es increíble lo que hacen The Analogues!!! Brillante!!
