Jeff Beck - A Man For All Seasons: In the '60s (docu 2015)

  • At the end of 1964, celebrated guitar maestro Eric Clapton left the Yardbirds, a band still searching for their first hit. His replacement was a player of very different capabilities - a technical and sonic pioneer who helped propel the group from their former status as a blues covers act to become one of the most innovative and daring musical collectives working in the UK. This film traces Jeff Beck's music and career throughout the 1960s - his formative influences and early groups, his work with The Yardbirds, his brief, bizarre reinvention by producer Mickie Most as a solo pop star, and the first, radical incarnation of the Jeff Beck Group, during which he played alongside vocalist Rod Stewart and then bass player Ron Wood. Featuring a plethora of rare performance and studio footage, exclusive interviews, contributions from those who worked with and alongside Jeff during this period and a host of other features, all of which combine to make this documentary - the first yet to singularly focus on Beck's career - a legitimate tribute and enthralling history of this often underrated musician, writer and performer. Includes new interviews with: Yardbirds first manager, Giorgio Gomelsky; the man who took over from Gomelsky, colourful music biz impresario, Simon Napier Bell; Jeff's fellow Yardbirds, Jim McCarty & Chris Dreja; musical conspirators from the early 70s, Tim Bogert & Max Middleton; the ever shocking Pamela Des Barres (aka Miss Pamela of The GTOs); legendary music press scribes, Charles Shaar Murray & Chris Welch; Beck's official biographer Martin Power and Uncut Magazine editor, Nigel Williamson.

While walking with a friend in Central Park one Saturday, we came upon a natural amphitheater formed by the park's landscape, and at the bottom of the hillock upon which we stood, a band was setting up to play a free concert. We sat down to watch and listen to what turned out to be Jeff Beck, with Rod Stewart, Nicky Hopkins and Ron Wood playing all the songs from the Truth album, which had maybe? just been released? I have carried that memory ever since.

One of the most important aspects of Jeff was his support of female musicians, actually jump starting the careers of Jennifer Batten and Rhonda Smith after her tenure with Prince. Tal Wikenfield was virtually unknown until Jeff plucked her up, although she still would have been the outstanding musician she eventually would become. As big as he's been over the years, the nurturing and mentorship of female musicians was refreshing!

Jeff Beck has always been the best of the “big 3” British blues rock guitarists, now more than ever. Jimmy Page is the mad professor, the ultimate rock producer & arranger, Clapton captures the spirit, emulates & channels their early mutual heroes, and Beck has taken the guitar and made it an art form. He’s the ultimate tasty, badass electric guitarist.

@@jamescatlow7887 I love the PG era but in terms of chops Green wasn't even the best guitarist in that lineup.
He had a fantastic voice, wrote cool music, looked great, and had a unique tone; but in terms of chops and licks he just wasn't on par with the big names from the british blues.
Jeff Beck will probably always be the Jordan of that scene but let's not forget Paul Kossof or Peter's protege Gary Moore.
Hell, I'd even put Iommi as 2x the guitarist Green was in terms of chops but all of that misses the point of the package deal that made him interesting.

@judgegarry - I think you're mostly right, but the really magic part for me is the way he did things first - much like other great guitarists, Jeff Beck inspired other guitarists to emulate the way he played, but he had to invent the way he sounded, and the guitarists he inspired were following a trail he had already cleared. One example was when he was sitting in a recording studio with a guest sitar player, and figured out that he could play close enough to a sitar on his guitar that they didn't need the sitar player. Lots of people have sounded like Beck did on "Shape of Things", but when Beck recorded that song, NO ONE had sounded like him!

    • @cravinbob
      @cravinbob Před rokem

I disagree since who wants to copy Beck? I suppose when he quit Yardbirds mid-tour the bass player jumped into the role and had to keep the Beck sound going for a while. Many like Beck play experimental stuff other than rock and each finds what they like and may cop a lick ot two from others. I guess it is improv jazz rock and you got Metheny, Steve Morse to name just two. Beck has done many different things but all those guys use certain pickups, bodies, effects, tunings, amps etc and they know how to play. The one that nobody can copy is Jimi Hendrix, even though some have tried and even SRV was close on Voodoo Child but those of us with ears can tell the difference in a few seconds. Not a slam on anyone, but Jimi was just that good and even invented the sound that everyone tries to copy. Who can play at all 10s and use feedback for the melody? Guitars off the rack2 pedals and a wah and a couple Marshall 50 watt. In the studio it was different but only on the board. Have you heard and read the page that features the creation of his All Along the Watchtower?
All these great players are treated by british idiot narrators as failing because they are not in the "Charts"! Crappy little documentaries (Ha) abound. We are a special breed because we know what is real and don't fall for sappy tunes created by a team of inventors. George Martin worked in a small corner studio owned by Capital records but Parlaphone on the label. One day someone came in and said these cats are The Beatles, see what you can do. Almost overnight Beatles were on Capital proper and George became Sir George. How many tried to copy that? Most of them. Davy Jones of Monkees really thought they were just as real as The Beatles. Now kids today say "Well, the Beatles were a boy band"...arrrggghhh Yeah right and Jimi was just loud noise...
My friend Rick Danko could whip out straight jazz chord/melodies I learned when I handed him my 59 ES-175. I told him to stop. You can't do that you are a bass player I said! I was joking but he astounded me.

Jeff Beck could play the goofy saxophone theme from the Benny Hill show in such a way that you’d end up sobbing and missing your mother. The man was a singularity, a sort of freakishly talented guitar sound smith. His dynamic range is unparalleled, as is his range of emotion. He could caress the strings so gently that your heartbeat would overwhelm the amplifier, then raise the intensity to that of a solid booster rocket engine, and the tone never suffered a bit. His triple pianissimo had just as much body and weight as his triple forte. His stream of consciousness style of improvisation was as clearly defined and boldly stated as any classical music composition ever created. The four pieces that Jeff and his band played at the Crossroads festival concert I watched today were absolutely stunning. Unbelievable. Jeff and Vinnie Colaiuta were cut from the same cloth👍

They were both the kings of their respective styles, Jeff Beck was fortunate enough to have lived long enough to have a much larger musical legacy than Hendrix did, as he died in his 20’s. Who knows what Hendrix may have morphed into if he’d had another 40 years of life to look back upon. Just another old guitarist, with an opinion.

He transcended music and guitar, everyone who ever met him had only the nicest things to say about him..from a limo driver showing him around the area before a gig and him trying the local favorite drink, to one of my closest friends meeting him back stage presenting him with vintage 50's hot rod decals. Something has snapped in the guitar-driven, blues-rock world. Jeff Beck was always there for us, starting with Shapes of Things, which at the time I wasn't even sure the solo was a guitar..!!
But all of a sudden, a force that seemed timeless, immovable and yet fluid has disappeared, leaving, for me anyway, a void. It's like the passing of a fave family member..
His appearance never changed, including his Beatle-esque hair style, but his music never stayed the same. He could be everything to everybody, and one only had to go through his catalog, no matter one's musical interest, to find a gem that would make them a fan.
I never tried to play Jeff Beck riffs, unlike with Clapton, Page, Bloomfield etc. His playing was beyond my understanding to process, mentally or physically, so I didn't try. Instead, I just became part of the listening audience. I was a big fan.

Many did not “get” Beck. For many people, they cannot get into instrumentals, they want lyrics they can sing along with. I love instrumentals, where the guitar is the voice! Thus Beck never got of that pop “top 10” appeal! Beck always stayed true to his vision, and made many many great songs, which were never heard on the radio!
Even on his solo stuff, he would play all genres, and fusion of genres! Rock, Jazz, Blues, etc….you never knew what he was going to play next!!

His playing today is SUPERIOR to any prior moment in his career!
(I've always wondered about that IMPOSSIBLE MYSTERY: every musician / band should GET BETTER AS THEY GET OLDER, based on logic and science, but almost all get worse, dramatically! The LAST Rolling Stones album MUST be 99% better than their 1960s work, get it? They've learned so much, PLUS heard so much that they should have LESS TOLERANCE for cliches and filler and weak tunes. Yet it's the precise opposite. I assume that's because.... as soon as the musician gets RICH.......laziness sets in like a rot. They no longer have anything to "prove" and are no longer hungry. They get comfy, fat, and lazy. Tragically.) (Writing songs is sooo much fun and recording is too.)

It was INCREDIBLE beyond anything else in the guitar universe. I have NEVER tired of listening to it OR ‘Wired’. Couldn’t play much of it back then at 19. I’ve listened and copped every song on Blow By Blow over the years (68 now) I STILL listen to it, it’s as interesting to me as the first time. I can get a bit ‘close’ to sounding like Jeff, but NO WAY can I sound JUST like him. There are so many ‘Beck’ nuances it’s IMPOSSIBLE. He’s always been in my top 5 players list, maybe even no. 1 because I really don’t like anyone else’s playing MORE than his. There And Back and every other album are ALL incredible.

Your aspiration is commendable, but you'll be at your best just sounding like you (something that, as a singer, it took me too many years to realize: now I find myself in a band at 68, understanding that at last, trying to start something! Can I do it? That remains to be seen. The public has a hunger for young attractive female singers, and though not unattractive for my age, well, there is my age, as an enormous obstacle. Thank goodness I have no interest in pop music: that just might be my saving grace.) If you play to your greatest strengths - assuming you know by now what they are - you can't go wrong! I urge you to go out and find your own groove, then ride it all the way to your goals, whatever form those take (my friends have all urged me to start setting my sights low at first. If I don't get out of my own town, at least I've had a good time before I stop, whenever that may be. If I find no success as an artist, then perhaps at least I could sell my songs.) I hope you'll try - it's never too late!
