Superb stuff. Thank you. I have just started changing over from Scrivener to Obsidian. I used it previously for running D&D, but I am astounded with just how much power and potential there is in it for writing!
I was struggling today to find a useful beginner's how-to for Obsidian in the year 2023. This is it!
Even if I wasn't going to use it for writing or use Longform, the first part of this video really helped me navigate and get started with multiple projects using Obsidian. Thank you!

This guide has been so useful. I watched a 1.5 hour in depth guide previously, but yours I keep coming back to learn the features, this is my fifth time here in a week. Thanks for the quick/concise guide!
Wow, AMAZING walkthrough, GREAT job!!!
Great job! Thanks a lot!
Greatly appreciate this video. I am now starting to use Obsidian for short-form writing thanks to many of your videos
Happy to help 😁
Hi. Longform itself and your presentatins are awesome. I would not expect that such a function exist.✍
I installed Obsidian yesterday and uninstalled Scrivener. I had no idea at the time that Obsidian could have Scrivener-like capabilities. I just didn't enjoy Scrivener anytime I tried to use it, although I could see its potential. I'm really excited about writing in Obsidian. Thanks for showing how.
Always happy to help 😁
If I had known that a free program like this could write books this well, my suffering would have been greatly reduced XD Thank you so much! That is such a well-done tutorial and easy to follow. I will try to write my next book in it and see how well it fares. I will have to finish my current one on Scrivener trial (I had bought it for the iPad, but my laptop is new so I run the trial) but the next will be in Obsidian! :D
I am writing NaNoWriMo in Obsidian right now and am loving it 😁
Hi, great tutorial! Thank you so much. May I ask you if there is a way to create a list of references linked to citations in the article, say for a systematic review, like one would do using zotero in Ms word.
There are a few options, it depends what you want to do with them.
For a bibliography, using a markdown citation in the text and pandoc gives you a manuscript.
For footnotes in Obsidian that work for export you can use either of the markdown footnote syntaxes. I use a footnote plugin.
@@DannyHatcherTech Is there an example video of this? I cannot seem to do it. Thanks
@@SajanAcharya I have shared it in some older research ones I believe.
My research process video may have it in.
This is nice. Canvas is the best mind mapping and ideation tool currently. And its integrated with all my notes.
Yet I never thought of using it to write screenplay. Dumb me. 😔
Its an affordance I feel lots of people overlook 😁
What about excalidraw?
Danny nice video and I like this series on how to use plugins.
Question: Is there a way to compile your MOC in one md document for export in Word? Lats say MOC has links to Chapter 1, Chapter 2, etc and all chapters have links to Act 1, Act 2, etc. Transclusion works just on the first level (chapters).
Exporting to a word doc from and md file is through pandoc (my preference).
The longform plugin can 'compile' those files together so the export is easier.
With transclution the export become much harder.
@@DannyHatcherTech I get that Longform can compile but the problem is when you do ZK method your MOC of permanent notes is manuscript finished you don't need to arrange anything. Do you know a workflow to do that?
@@goranstoja Not that I can think off. That isn't something I do.
MOC's and Atomic note zettelkasten stuff is not what I do.
that makes it easier to write a paper!
I added the Better word count plugin on my iPad and enabled it, but I’m not seeing the word count show up. Any ideas why this could be? Great video by the way!
I am not sure.
The plugin might not be tablet compatible.
Hello Danny. I want to use the Obsidian application for my engineering education. Although I tried with a clipper and a chrome md text download plugin, I couldn't do exactly what I wanted. When I uploaded the mathematics codes prepared for mathematics students into the application in md format, I saw that mathematical expressions in many subjects such as fraction lines in rational expressions, rooted numbers, exponential expressions of numbers, limits, derivatives, integrals could not occur smoothly as they appear on the site. If there is a solution that I can note all the expressions on the page in the same way, please help me. By the way, there is no copyright infringement. The information on the site is provided for our benefit.
I do clip webpages directly into Obsidian. My flow uses Zotero for highlights but even with that, getting math to show I believe would require latex. I think you need to explore some of those plugins.
@@DannyHatcherTech Thanks for the quick response, mate. I'll take your advice and learn latex. I wish you a successful and beautiful life. Yours sincerely. 🙏🏻
Hi! It is possible to make indent in obsidian? I can't find it how to do :(
Indents are like other writers - use tab or shift tab.
If you are referring to a single line indtent that is formatting which I would do in a text formatting program like word or scrivener...
@@DannyHatcherTech Thank you, I use the tab, yes. I try to use Obsidian for writing but I don't think is for me, I need something more easy to use. I like scrivener but is not free. Thanks for the answer!
Aren't # used for tags in Obsidian? I know how they're used in Markup but in Obsidian I though they were for tags.
#word is a tag # word is a heading.
The space makes all the difference 😉
@@DannyHatcherTech ah, good to know. For future reference.
I've started to prefer AsciiDoc over Markdown, way more support for longform content.
I Always receive SO Much from your Obsidian Instruction! I Added the “ZOOM” Plugin {{which forced me to hugely DARKEN my Internal LINKs’ Color-So I’m not Blinded by ZOOM’s Link-Headings!!}}; Wow! Amazing Plugin!-And it makes Bulleting More Powerful since I can now isolate each bullet as desired. Such foresight by the Founders to make Plugins Foundational to their app-a view with which Kepano is also in agreement-indeed: it’s a key reason he was added to the leadership.
