Is Sony E-mount coming to an inevitable end? And this is what could be coming next from Sony!

  • German CZcamsr Michael Leidel ( • Ist Sony E-Mount am En... ) says that we are now close to a point where it becomes difficult to sell new E-mount lenses because we already have a ton of excellent lenses for all kinds of photographers. And even though the new generation lenses that are coming out now have actually improved in terms of image quality, af performance and size, we cannot expect this situation to remain that way for much longer.
And relying "only" on camera sales is not enough to keep a system profitable. To be clear, the author says that eventually this will happen to all systems. Canon, Nikon and so on. But Sony is already at that tipping point, thanks to the much longer history.
And in this video I explain what could happen to save the Sony camera system!

Lets be honest, it is too small. It was designed for APS-C sensor (NEX) and lens mount covers very corners of a FF sensor so designing FF lenses for E-mount is probably harder than for RF, Z or L mounts.

I completely agree with your idea of curved sensors. They are a significant technological improvement as they as you hinted give the same image quality across the entire sensor which cameras/lenses with flat sensors don't. So sensors may be more expensive but high quality lenses would be more economic to produce. To convince photographers Sony should start with a fixed lens camera showing that technology (could be even a different sensor format, even with different proportions.)

  • @amermeleitor
    @amermeleitor Před 3 měsíci +5

I think it could be possible. A great thing could be the smallest possible mount for 44x33mm sensor, with the smallest flange distance possible. It could be only slightly bigger than the Nikon Z one, with even less flange distance. So you could adapt current Sony lenses and at the same time you could buy medium format lenses that properly cover all the sensor.
A 44x33mm sensor would allow near the same video features, speed, and you can make small cameras too. Just see the Nikon Z30 with that big mount. So in that "small" medium format mount you could put an APSC sensor if you like and the lenses doesn't need to be big. And the final point:
Sony could make the 44x33mm line of sensors with global shutter models. So in this way Sony could more or less overcome the ISO problem in the global shutter and you can get the fastest sensor possible.
This way implies way less money and less I+D than the curved sensor new mount.
I would love a brand making a "one mount" that covers from APSC to 33x44mm sensors. It could be Sony, or Nikon (with the Z mount), or Fuji with a revamped GFX new mount.

The issue with this argument is that most photographers or videographers buy the lenses they need for what they do. I shoot events and I have all the lenses I need. The maturity of the system doesn’t really matter to most people, as you’ve already built out your kit. It doesn’t take 20 years to build out a kit.

I can see a reasonable (enough to make business sense) amount of people switching to a new (curved?) sensor and mount system for the reasons outlined in the video. Noticeably better image quality (and, more consistently) with addition of more compact lenses. So, Sony would catch current customers as well as new customers.
I do think, though, that this needs to be coupled with some advancements in software.
Edit: I’d also say that system maturity is a metric people site when they are looking to get into a camera. There are obvious benefits, also, when there are just a lot of lenses floating around.

I admit, the E mount started as an s35 mount but has really solidified its spot in the full-frame world. Sure, the mount ring might be a bit small, possibly limiting the IBIS component, but this is Sony we're talking about. They make almost all the sensors on the market in all shapes and sizes and are catching up with the EOS EF mount system from the DSLR days. Lens sales are good because they've got competitive camera bodies, and their colour science has come a long way. They wouldn’t ditch this system in the mirrorless full-frame realm for something riskier, especially with the RF mount lens prices being ridiculous.
The real challenge for Sony's competitors is their huge backlog of legacy lenses. Canon RF users were fine with old EF lenses with adapters until recently, with the crazy super zoom 2.8 lineup. Sony doesn't face this issue practically, but switching systems would create this problem and heavily affect new lens sales, just like with Canon. Nikon has been missing for most of the mirrorless era and is only now starting to regain some ground at the consumer level (though I still love the D850 - it's solid as a brick). There's little threat to Sony in full-frame, and S35 is still picking up in professional videography. I'd say Sony is beyond comfortable now, and the E mount is likely here to stay until the next big tech shift in the camera industry.

I think Sony can and should boost lens sales by releasing more distinct camera options. Particularly, they do not have a pro hybrid APS-C camera (dual card slots). The best options are the A6700 and FX30, where you're choosing between single card-slot & overheating vs. single-shot photography. If Sony put its AF in a dual-slot hybrid APS-C vintage-style body, I think it would steal sales from the Fuji XT5, and even MFT cameras, for people who want a professional, compact set-up. Sony also really needs to stop making every camera look the exact same.

My thoughts are, all the major camera companies are going to struggle in 5 -10 years as they face the following challenges.
Smart phones and AI continue to erode the sales of lower end mass market and mid range cameras.
The slower evolution of cameras will mean, most user will keep their camera’s, for longer or buy second hand, also meaning development cycles of new models will extend to be more akin to the film camera life cycles 7 years or longer.
Cameras will be come an even more niche product, for professional ( most of whom, tend to retain their camera for a long time) enthusiast with deep pockets and the fashion market like Fuji X100vi.
Will Sony camera division, end up going the same way as their Vaio laptop and pc one? which was sold off 10 years ago as that market contracted and became less profitable.
Most of the successful changes lens mount, have included a change in flange distance and technology. Canon FD-EF 35mm manual focus to electronic AF and all the DSLR to Mirrorless. So the curved sensor or even liquid lens would be the most likely change.
Just a thought. The life span of Nikon F mount was 61 years from the F1 to D6 release. So the E-mount might make it to 2071

I think we will have E mount for many years to come. Minolta SR/MC/MD mount started in 1958 being replaced by Minolta A mount in 1985 to allow autofocus. Sony still had A mount until around 2020 although E mount came in around 2010. I don't think mounts change for the sake of it, they change when major advances in camera bodies require it. Mounts have been tweaked such as A mount going from 5 pin to 8 pin for minor improves but it takes big advancements to justify creating a whole new mount.

I still use occasionally my old NEX-6 after trading in a6500 for a6700 recently. I've never been tempted to go full frame. Small is beautiful. So, now I'd jump on a 40 megapixel APS-C body accompanied by f/1.2 or faster lenses. Sony can make these lenses smaller than Viltrox is able to so far. There is room for E-mount growth with APS-C cameras. Sony has been derelict in filling out their APS-C lens lineup compared to, say, Fuji. That's why you see 3rd party lens makers stepping into the gaps (the Viltrox F1.2 primes or the Tamron superzooms, for example). My experience with my first Sony APS-C camera (A6700) has convinced me that this format still has lots of unmet potential. I'd like to see an APS-C body with more megapixels AND a global-shutter sensor. This would automatically open up the field for sports/wildlife-oriented, fast telephotos and zooms, which are sorely lacking in APS-C-land.. No need for a curved sensor yet. BTW as an MFT user, I'd agree that the MFT mount is mature. Some of the older lenses are certainly showing their age, being not ideal for modern video productions in particular. But MFT keeps getting life-prolonging injections, like the GH7. I'd love for Panasonic and OM System to go through their entire lens catalogs and revise/update/replace all those lenses whose operation isn't up to current focusing or optical quality standards.

The lens sales reasoning makes no sense to me. Option 1) provide updated lenses for the E-mount system (like they have with the 20-70 G, 24-70 GM 2, 70-200 GM 2, 85mm F1.2, … and sell to a market base of millions - a market base that keeps growing. There is plenty of room for new lenses like a 24-105 G II, a lightweight, high quality 24-200 to compete with Tamron 28-200, a lightweight telescoping or updated 200-600 to compete with Canon 100-500, long primes with built in TC, improved 1.4 and 2.0 TC, a very high quality tiny full frame lens lineup for A7CII, and A7CR to compete with Fuji X100IV. I would buy all of these! Option 2) make a new mount with a handful of lenses and sell to a market base of a few thousand cameras. I could see Sony making a medium format, but they will make it small, and the camera market base will be small, with no reason to change the mount. The medium format lenses would work on all Sony cameras. Sony could even implement a curved sensor camera with the current mount and save a bundle in manufacturing. If I am Sony Marketing, and want the most revenue, I am going with Option 1.

As an economist, I would argue that a for a widespread mature system, lens sales are can be higher than for a new system. This would be the case if, for example, more people (since mount is widespread and mature) buying fewer lenses per person (since they already have many lenses) dominates fewer people (as in the case of a new mount) buying more lenses (since they don't own lenses yet). Arguably a better way to think this market it s that mature system brand needs to beat competing brands and own products that clients already own. One strategy is to invest in R&D and make existing products (and competing brands' products) obsolete relative to those newly launched. If this is not working, sales will drop but so will R&D spending, so business can remain healthy as long as clients need to replace products not fit for use or keep growing number of products owned.

i don't known, canon managed to keep a single lens mount from 1987 to 2016 so I'm not sure that the 10 year old e-mount is that long in the tooth. Also, changing mounts is a huge risk. Sony enjoys a strong market position specifically bevause people already own e-mount lenses. If they change their mount people have less incentive to stay with sony and all camera brands become equally valid.
I can imagine sony releasing a medium format line with its own mount alongside e-mount... but killing it off would be ridiculous.

Didn’t Sony make it easy for 3rd party lens manufacturers to create E-mount lenses? This goes against the idea that they need lens sales to be profitable. The curved sensor is interesting, but to be optimized, would need to be paired with a specific focus length. I think Sony still has plenty of room to make smaller, more stylish e-mount cameras.

    • @anupew3276
      @anupew3276 Před 3 měsíci +1

'curved sensor would need to be paired with specific focus length' - not sure if the light leaving the lens isnt already normalised, I think it should be, therefore curvature would be function of flange distance, not focal lenght of the lens.
But if its true and you have to use different curvature for different focal length for optimal result, you should be able to choose curvature that isnt extreme (lets say for 70mm) and it should still be a bit easier to correct for that than correcting for flat sensor.
'This goes against the idea that they need lens sales to be profitable.' the lens sale reasoning is IMO stupid and false. Nikon used F-mount for over 60 years and never had that kind of problem either.

For me there are two direction for Sony to exploit. One is the APS-C format which is compact and really needs a bump. Second, but even more important is the look and feel, in other words the customer experience. The full frame bodies still don't have the real quality look like a Nikon, Leica, Olympus or Fuji. [For instance the A7CR is too plastic fantastic for me]. And I would prefer an identical performance in a more robust and metal external body. Take a look at Nikon Z8 for instance, with a small digital display on top of the body with the major settings. So more in the size of the A99 which provides a better grip. On the other hand, what I fear is that Sony is neglecting the true pure photographers and is going the middle road with inclusion of video tools in full frame bodies.

Even 5 years from now there will be improvements to make better e-mount lenses on focal lengths that already exist.

And ignored the more 'portable' rangefinder style cameras, the S9 is an interesting concept, the popularity of the Fuji x100 series shoukd be a call to the big makers that this is what people want, and it is achievable! Good functional cameras, with compact lenses are a valid and sizable niche, but sony and canon among others continue with big chunky DSLR style bodies, sony must be on to the A7SR-13C by now, but only the 2nd A7c? Apparently the Olympus pen series cameras sell faster tyan they can make them in the far east, why are the big names not exploring that market? curved sensors will be amazing, for sure.
Meanwhile there are not even stacked bsi sensors that use the technology for higher resolutions, but only faster read outs. as far as I know at least. so I guess the "conventional", flat sensors still have much potential left to be sliced into the market year after year for several iterations. besides.. the step from curved to curved, stacked, bsi might be a bit to much at once, so curved will just make us wait 10 years until it is matured, just to be replaced by the next big thing then, so no reason to live in constant fear of mounts being dropped. Everything dies once in a while, however the popularity and 3rd party support of the e-mount is what sells Sony as a system. dropping it, must be enormously great reasoned by sony.

If Sony releases a 24-70 GMIII lens with no fringing, distortion, and does not let dust inside it would be the dream. Mine was used but was in perfect condition, use sit for few days an got one dust spec inside. But doesn't effect photo quality. But that might be impossible athtis focal length. As I've used the GMII I have lots of shots I have to fix in photoshop, fix spesific areas use inverter masks and Camera Raw to fix spesific areas, paint in the corrected areas. Guard rails and hand rails for example can get yellow fringing in even spacing like it's more code.
Seenlot sof magenta and blue on cars, trees. But it depends on the light and scene I guess. And aperture. But with 2.8 it's lots of it. Less so with 4.0 but still some but I not done much testing. But I can easily fix it in photoshop. But the weight makes it balanced with the a7iv. So definitely don't want a much lighter lens. I did not see any reviews shooting gin scenios I did, at sundown a bike path or signs reflecting sundown sun, or sundown from the side at rail crossing, or building sieth lots of shade but sundown and bright at the same time. Or so much car photos. I see glare isn't horrible, but get some if direct sunlight, or from the side, but should try to use the lens good more. But still a good allrounder lens ingot mine for a good price too. But keen to know what future might bring.

yeah, color fringing (and GMII is one of the best of 28-70 lenses I have seen results of) and extending tube sucking in dust are reasons I never bought 24-70 and generally never liked this kind of lens (I only have some 18-50 for DSLR APS-C and they have the same problems with CA and dust). And if nothing interesting is announced from Sony soon to wait for (like 24-70 f/2 GM) I will just go for that new Sigma 28-45. Its big, heavy, a bit less versatile, but image quality is superb and have internal zoom mechanism. 24-70mm zooms still have a lot of room for improvements, probably for several generations.

There still is a huge market for highest quality Sony lenses (G and, of course, GM). Every owner of a third party lens for his/hers Sony camera body would love to replace it with THE original sooner or later.
Moreover the difference between recent Sony mark i and mark ii lenses is quite remarkable.
It remains the most mobile full frame system, by far. The compactness has not been beaten by any competitor.
They gave us digital photography but the cameras and lenses do not differ very much in size compared with their predecessors.
I do not see the point of investing in Z8 or Z9 or even in a S1 - the Panasonic brick. And the R mount is huge, too. The optics are sheer in size.
The premium Nikon lenses are much to big AND heavy.
While Sony's camera bodys grow thicker and each Iteration gains a bit in weight, they are still the most compact (leave out the Sigma fp). AND Sony lenses get lighter, smaller while excel in optical performance even setting out for new benchmarks the market has not seen before.

'Every owner of a third party lens for his/hers Sony camera body would love to replace it with THE original sooner or later.' Have you seen performance of Sigma lenses? Some of them are even better than GM, many are on par with GM and the only reason to replace them with GM would be if you have A1 or A9 and need more than those 15fps continous shooting Sony limits 3rd party lenses to. Also some are just irreplacable (Laowa macro lenses for example have no counterparts from Sony).
That said, I agree with the rest of what you said and I personally hope that the trend of thicker and larger bodies from Sony would continue. A7VI was really good, but a bit larger body would be even better for comfortable grip. Some people say A9 is the best one yet, but I havent got chance to hold that one yet. IMO what Sony excels in is buttons and wheels placemet. Nikon or Canon are more comfortable to hold, but (especially for canon) camera control elements just arent well placed and easy to reach.

I don't see any valid reason for Sony would end E/FE mount, they can still sell lense for it. Like makinh additional or new versions of lenses. I don't see a technical reason why new lenmounts are needed E mount already has connectors that do all needed.
So unless they come up with something that requires new connectors.
But having us buy new lenses for a new camera for note reason other than to have different lens mount to sell new lenses is a bad move. Forcing users tha already got hands on good lenses this makes no sense. IMO but I won't be surprised if this happens.

I think it's entirely possible that a company like Canon or Sony could get out of the camera market and simply stop producing cameras and lenses. To anyone who says: I can't imagine a company like Canon or Fuji (or any other well-known photo company) leaving this segment, I say: Minolta and Olympus have done exactly that.

Well, Minolta was bought by Sony. Olympus is now OM Digital Solutions. I think Sony would come up with a new mount long before leaving cameras, but I think you're right.

If they don't sell enough anymore, adding different mount to sell more will work the opposite way, especially now as the current lens mount has all we need. So unless ne mount bring new possibilities there sno reason for it. People might boycott them. With Sony already doing many things right. Why would they switch to make the fans get mad? But I knwp their mobile phones got weird for some years making overheating phones that were bad to hold. Made for giant hands. And worked optimally in subzero temps but not in summer in 30c. 🤦 Xz premium was junk. But atleast now the shape and phone size is more reasonable. USB ports were bad back then on xz premium. So was weary of the USB c port on the a7iv. So far it's good but will see after long term use.

I wish they'd work on SMALLER. Lighter, smaller, but fabulous.
