- Devlog about the new checkpoint system for Super Cat Tales: PAWS. Super Cat Tales: PAWS is an indie platformer game I've been working on for more than a year. In this devlog I talk about the new checkpoint system that will allow players to avoid restarting the level from the very beginning in case of game over.

okay, i have a lot of thoughts, so let’s get through them one by one
on the names situation: i nearly choked on my drink when i heard my name. i like tara/tarra as a name, and equally like rose (i don’t think it’s too close to rigs at all, but the poll results preferred tarra pretty strongly.) has the other character (the one with the name like tara) been visually revealed? maybe we could do a similar vote/workshop another name. until the game is out, all names are subject to change, right?
second of all, you’re right! portabello is SO cute. i wanna hang out there! as a side note, portabello is one of the most infamous varieties of edible mushroom- it would be funny to include a reference. great town overall! i love it : )
speaking of things i love, i am SO jazzed about the level design. the sticky honey, the strings of airborne enemies, the blocks with spikes- it looks like the options for how to get through levels are really opening up! my favorite part of games is getting to explore the world, and these levels look like they’ve got a lot to show off! super excited ^^
as a last note, though, i do have some questions about checkpoints. are you able to turn off the game and resume at a checkpoint? the advantage of a mobile game is that you can play it anywhere- i can pull out sct2 when i’m standing in line, or on the bus, or lost in the desert! with life moving so fast, though, i worry that longer levels might mean i might not have enough time to finish them in one go. checkpoints would be very useful to me if they allowed quicksaving.

overall super excited for everything! would be happy to offer any technical assistance that i can, especially now that i’m majoring in game design ^^

I just realized how big this game really is, hope it gets editors choice in the App Store! But my opinion still stands, make the arrows in the fishing mini game on the sides of the screen so that it can be more clear (please)!

a new devlog! i have some name suggestions that is close to tara: clara, gaia, leia, mia, zia, or naya. also, nice addition of checkpoint system to the game, but i hope there's an option where you can turn it off as well, so that there is still challenge for sct players. rooting for this and keep up the good work!
I thought Mia was a good name for the cat as well. Maybe she's made for it.

I think this system works great using it now and the perfect crowns also make up for it.
For the checkpoint mechanic, there could be a three life system where if you die in the same area 3 times, you'll start the level over so that it feels more punishing
This suggestion could be hard to create but I would really enjoy a level creator where you can create your own levels or play user generated levels.

The new kind of checkpoints are a really cool idea! Csnt wait for the game to come out :3 will and/or what will be the items objects? Will it be something new? Or from the previos cat games? Cant wait to see!!
This is gonna be the best SCT game (specifically because Mesa is in it)
That checkpoint system is honestly excellent, it's got the same amount of convenience as the quick retry system in Celeste and many SMW romhacks.
It would be cool if a Level with Multiple Checkpoints (if have) have a Option to Choose where you want to Start (After Beating the Level), like Star the Level in the Second Checkpoint to Collect something you Missed. Btw, the Beach Girls Sprites are Adorable! 😍

Finally a checkpoint system I would like to know how it would be if it were connected to Super cat tails 2 but I would say a checkpoint system in any video game is usually good especially when the levels are big and difficult

I think the checkpoint should be for the room before the one you died in, unless the rooms are big it might make deaths not matter, you could instead lose coins too
I think it will be pretty interesting to have some kind of beta r-kitty as a secret character
tbh I always needed checkpoints in sct
some levels were super long and annoying and it was pain to beat them (especially in my no damage challange)

The new cat for paws and super cat tales 2 will be munsgy moon that have the same Power of luna but only whith the moon on the map so make levels then you need to use munsgy moon and the color of munsgy will be blue light and mixed whith purple too

I have a proposal, after super cat comes out, such paws could do something like "the origin of the lunar crystal" it would be something that if this new game does not clarify some questions for us, it will help us

I have a great feeling that the checkpoints will be effective for this game. I've got an idea--instead of having players pay to use checkpoints, or making them free, you should make it that not using a checkpoint will give coins for free. This idea is from the game Shovel Knight.

Now that you've added this system to the game, and are planning to add different save files to the game, would a hard mode be nice? One of the kind that you unlock after beating the game at least once, just so we don't have any players forcing themselves to go through an unpleasant experience blindly.

@@retrobitadam Gionathan has already said that the game will have major updates in the future. so no, seeing a different version of each enemy that will require a totally different programming is not something I expected to see at the game's launch... not anytime soon,but it's my sugestion anyway
I don't know if you've already done this, but if there are volcano levels like in sct1 you should make dripping lava like the dripping water but it damages you if it falls on you
So I've played both cat tales games (Still playing through the second game) and I honestly don't mind the more story aspect the game has. Makes the cast feel alive. The items are a bit expensive even if I'm just at world 3. The 60 bell toll is behind a 750 coin wall, and that's an issue. Some bells go even behind a 2000 coin wall, which was devastating in 3-4: bat graveyard. Good game, minus those gripes.
That bieng said... for an idea... what if there's a town (and to an extent a cat) who enjoys music? The tunes he plays could be used to stun or flip over objects to reveal things. Of course, A shovel is still needed for stuff that's burrowed into the ground. The only name for them I can think of is Tune. Weak name, but I'm not good with names.
And my personal favorite cat is shinji, mainly because he's a blue cat, and it fits the sailor vibe well

to complete a perfect level in sct paws, we would need to complete the level without using checkpoints

I just got an idea, what do you think the ending is more difficult? Because the end of super cat tales 2 I passed first, but the one in the water temple took longer than the end!, in addition to super cat bros it was super difficult to pass the boss, so I suggest it be more difficult..
Fun fact: "Tara" is also a word in Philippines meaning "let's go"

How about the grey cat name Sam, short for “Samantha” from Apple TV+ new movie Luck. The orange cat should be Hiro, short for “Hirohito” the Japanese Emperor of WW2. Interestingly, Hirohito was not the one to cause Japan to go to war, the war was in the hands of Tojo and his military leaders.

I like how this checkpoint system is different from other ones. I have a question however, what happens when the player goes backwards into another door?
will the levels be harder? and i think it should be on apple arcade, and there should be things hidden in levels and if you find them you will get a new power thing.

I think that the checkpoints would make the game too easy, my idea would be to add lives as in the first game and every time you die a life will be taken away, and when these lives are over you return to the start of the level.
Will there be a way to see wich fish you caught and wich ones you didn't ?
yes, in case a fish is caught you'll see a panel with all the info about the fish. If the fish is lost you might still be able to tell the species by looking as its silhouette or when it jumps out of water
