  • We are on Bali, the "Island of the Gods"! Our first tour takes us to the northeast. After enjoying the wonderful view of Mount Batur (Gunung Batur), the second highest volcano on the island, we ride our bikes through the rural heart of Bali to the rice fields with two local guides.
We start in Penelokan. The place is located on the southern crater rim of the caldera and offers a fantastic view of the 1717 m high volcano and the crater lake Lake Batur (Danau Batur). Mount Batur is a stratovolcano that is still bubbling away. It has been active over 20 times in the last 200 years. We enjoy the view and remember that we want to climb the mountain in a few days. Hopefully it won't decide to break out again right now!
Then our mountain bikes are ready and we realize that it would have been smart to take a bike camera mount with us on the trip! We drive downhill towards the south on quiet streets. The landscape is very rural and village-like. Traditional farmsteads and village temples stretch along the road.
We stop at one of the houses. The property is surrounded by a wall. Inside the homestead there are several small buildings and pavilions that contain the family rooms, the barn and the pigsty. Not to forget the house temple with the shrines for the ancestors and the gods. The chickens peck for food between the buildings. A very interesting insight into the traditional life of the Balinese!
We continue to the rice fields by mountain bike. Wet rice is grown in Bali. The water required for this is channeled into the fields through sophisticated irrigation channels. All rice farmers have joined together to form traditional irrigation cooperatives (subak). This community not only regulates irrigation, but also determines the entire process of rice cultivation.
First, the rice plants are grown in smaller beds. As soon as they are large enough, they are moved by hand at a distance of approx. 20 cm and the fields are flooded. When the rice is ripe, it is harvested by hand and either threshed on site or stored together with the stalk. The fields are then burned down, the ash fertilizes the soil, and the cycle can begin again. Such a cycle lasts about 5 months, so you have two to three harvests a year.
Our bike tour ends near Ubud. We leave the rice fields and focus on the next item on the day's agenda, lunch! Of course there is rice. Various vegetable side dishes and the typical Indonesian satay skewers are served. Delicious!
In our next video from Bali we will show you Ubud, the artistic and cultural heart of the island.
Many thanks to our Indonesian guide Wira for the perfect organization of the trip and the interesting information about the country and its people!
