Song of Susannah DEEP DIVE! (Spoiler Review)

  • Welcome to my book review of "Song of Susannah" by Stephen King. Today, I'm diving deep into the penultimate book of the Dark Tower series, a journey through time, space, and the mystical. This installment follows our heroes as they continue their quest toward the Dark Tower, facing ever more bizarre and fantastical challenges.
    SPOILERS BELOW...
In "Song of Susannah," we find our ka-tet divided. Susannah Dean, now pregnant with a demon's child, has been taken over by the personality of Mia and is whisked away to New York City in the year 1999. The narrative splits, following the separate paths of Roland and Eddie as they attempt to rescue Susannah, while also exploring King's unique meta-literary approach where he inserts himself as a character within the story.
This book is a blend of horror, fantasy, and Western genres, typical of the Dark Tower series. It explores themes of fate, destiny, and the nature of the author's relationship to his creation. What makes "Song of Susannah" particularly intriguing are the elements of Stephen King's own life and the broader literary world that are woven into the fabric of the narrative, creating a story that's not only about the characters but about storytelling itself.
I'm eager to hear your thoughts and interpretations of this compelling piece of the Dark Tower series. Have you found any hidden meanings or connections to King's other works? Let's discuss in the comments below!

The last book is such a roller-coaster ride. I look forward to seeing your react to everything. A lot is too come! I've read around 40 Stephen King books, love them all but yes sometimes the ending is kind of a let down compared to the world building of the story. But, in the newest IT movie, Stephen King makes a cameo as a character & gives Bill a hard time for not liking the ending of his books. I love that he listens to his readers & can make light of it.

If I could give you any advice, it would be to take your time! Everyone who has read this series really wishes they could get flashed by the memory eraser from Men in Black so they can read the series again for the first time. That a bold statement but I believe it's true. Your review of the final book is a video I am looking forward to!
    Buckle up, buttercup!!!! 😁

Once again you have provided an absolutely stellar review of the next book. I totally get what you mean about getting emotional coming to the end. The first time I read through DT 1-6 I was heavily addicted to booze and when I got to the end of SOS I realized I didn't really know what was going on in the story. Years later I gave up the sauce and started the series over. On this readthrough when I reached the end of SOS I was so distraught that the series was coming to an end I almost started over again because I didn't want the story to end. It's sooo fun seeing your reactions to the books and I'm super excited to see your thoughts on the final book!
P.S. I actually laughed out loud during the Maury clip.

    Aw man, great review!
I’ve never bitten my tongue so hard. There are so many things that you’ve touched that I want to comment on that would be huge, hairy-arsed spoilers. But no. I’ll keep schtum.
As well as the culmination to the Dark Tower, the next book is actually where you start to realise why you had to read all the other stuff. There’ll be highs. There’ll be lows. And both of those are emotional and also reactions to the story.
By the by. I know casting your mind back to Desperation and The Regulators might not be what you want to do, but the Skoldpadda is one of the can tah figurines from Desperation.
…yeah it probably wasn’t a good enough reason to read that pair, but at least the next lot of in-universe connections are a lot more satisfying.
Can’t wait for your thoughts on the next one and I’ll still be watching and enjoying post-Tower

I’m stoked to see your review of The Dark Tower, without spoiling anything, it’s gonna make you emotional.
Song of Susannah was a great book in my opinion, while I had before not cared too much about Susannah, this book made me like her quite a bit more. And that scene with King himself. Amazing, the best scene in the book by far. I loved it!
My biggest complaint about Song of Susannah is that no real swede would ever be named Mathiassen Van Wyck or however it was spelled. That name is not Swedish at all. Could be me being a bit picky about it since I’m a Swede, could be that XD
However, King was right about it being called a Sköldpadda with is the real Swedish word for it. It was however the word they used in the translated version of the book, which made it quite weird (yes, I’ve read about half of the books on this journey in my native language since they were way cheaper easier to get a hold off than the English versions).
Great review as always and I’m once again, super excited to see you reach the tower!

Seeing Stephen King in his own story was genius, I agree. Its really only something he could pull off.
On top of not having a clear story outline... Seriously, who does that? Stephen king does. 😅
One more book to go... And I'm curious what series will you do next?

Yeah that was great wasn't it? I had an inkling that he'd show up in this book after Wolves of the Calla but I thought he'd be a passing character in the background.

SoS and TDT (1/3 of the way in) have been somewhat disappointing. They feel weak and a bit 'well, that was convenient for the plot' when compared to books 1-(to mid)5. The doors were always an easy way to move the plot but I liked them being extremely rare. The magic turtle ornament that does exactly what you need it to was something else. Maybe when I finish TDT it'll all make sense - I'm still enjoying the journey.
I am 100% in Camp Doesn'tLikeTheMetaElements. I understand the 'why' and kind of saw them coming in the first two or three books. The doors are cool but they break things - stakes are lower when you add timey-wimey shenanigans. I don't hate the final books at all, it just feels like they were rushed (and it seems like they might have been). There are concepts that I like in both of these books and scenes that are really cool that I enjoyed. I just wish that the ideas had been allowed to marinate and become that much better.
SK: I get that it is a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. People harassed you to finish this series and bitched when you sped it up. You can't win. :(

    SPOILER for this book.
I absolutely love the Dark Tower series. I just finished Song of Susannah. I’ll be completely honest. I did not like it, and I am worried for the last book.
What I LOVE about the Dark Tower is how creepy and eerie of a western fantasy series this is. Books 1-5 completely nailed it.
And as you have covered in the video, Stephen King does not map out plots like other famous authors do, and I am really frustrated by it.
The entire concept of the characters realizing that they are fictional is absolutely brilliant, but it is NOT something I wanted in the Dark Tower series. Let alone, Stephen King HIMSELF makes an appearance….like seriously? DT 1-5 established a consistent pattern of themes, and book 6 is completely way out there.
I wanted more adventures like The Wastelands and The Wolves of the Calla. I wanted more eerie settings like The Gunslinger. Or even another back story like Wizard and Glass (hopefully shorter lol).
After the ka-tet’s assignment at the Calla, I wanted another The Wasteland’s adventure to the Tower with more lore and creepy creatures rather than Stephen King and his Meta-ness shows up.
In my opinion, the concepts that are introduced in Song of Susannah, basically ruin of what I rly thought the DT conclusion was going to be like.
Sorry for my rant 😂 love this channel! Hopefully the final book ain’t so bad

    • @PaperbackJourneys
      @PaperbackJourneys  Před 5 měsíci

Yeah it seems like the meta element of the series is really divisive. Some love it and some hate it. I'm in the former group but I can totally see why people might think it's a step too far.
The weird thing is that I don't think I'd accept this from any other author. It's such a Stephen King thing to do.
I hope you enjoy the last book more than this one though.
Thanks for commenting. I'm glad you like the videos.
