How Fast Is The "331 MPH" SSC Tuatara Really? This video will focus on three questions: 1) What do we know about the SSC Tuatara world record controversy? 2) How fast did the SSC Tuatara actually drive - was the 331 mph GPS speed accurate? 3) How fast can the SSC Tuatara go based on the specifications? We'll do some easy-to-understand calculus to understand how far the Tuatara actually drove based on the video, and use that to determine what the possible explanations are. In preparation for this video, I spoke with Jerod Shelby of SSC, Dewetron (the GPS company), Driven Studios (video production company), Oliver Webb (the driver of the run), and Shmee (the channel that explained the controversy to the masses). Check out the video for all the details!

Because, it sure seems like SSC is suddenly playing defense. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see it be true. Those pushing the performance envelope are developing incredible feats of engineering. 16:00 "You plug in the numbers based on *SSC specifications* ..."
Well, therein lies the problem. Can we trust them?
In the 1930's already both Mercedes and Auto Union discovered that lowering the drag is relatively simple. The real challenge is to keep the car aerodynamically stable at speeds over 400km/h(250mph). It's a difficult trade off. Side winds reportedly made Bernd Rosemeyer lose control of his Auto Union streamliner while doing 440km/h (274mph) and yet they had pioneered an early form of ground effect to prevent lift and tested models in wind tunnels. Rosemeyer crashed and died - and he is widely believed to be one of the greatest pre-war drivers with insane skills.
So let's assume the Tuatara is as insanely aerodynamically slippery as they claim (hard to believe - especially considering the latest revelations). If so its theoretical top speed is truly theoretical because it's a death trap above 250mph and you'd have to find a present day driver with the self-preservation instinct of the race drivers of the 1930's (pardon my sarcasm) to attempt that. Especially on a public road.
If the car isn't as slippery as their claim (which I dare sounds awfully optimistic in this type of car) then it's simply not capable of reaching its claimed top speed.

The Jesko (absolut) has 0.279Drag coef. And it looks slicker than the tuatara. Aerodynamics is one of the few thing that you can sorta tell just by looking. I just dont think the Tuatara has the same Drag as the Jesko. The SSC also has a bigger engine producing more power, which requires more cooling. . . And from where would SSC get the budget to refine their car to up to 0.279? Mr Koenigsegg said he spent a lot of money (more than a million perhaps? Can't remember what he said in the Geneva Motorshow) to achieve 0.279. SSC hasn't delivered a single car yet. It

I mean yeah, I believe you can but at what cost?? Such compromises make it unpractical. It's like driving a road-legal dragster. The question isn't if you can reach 500km/h but if you can do it without dying.

You were very diplomatic in describing Jerod's position in your call with him, but his deflection/deception around the existing run suggests they don't want to give any more data on it, because it would likely show that the car did not go anywhere near the claimed speed. So it's easier for them to pretend like they hold a record with an asterisk and give themselves more time to actually break it.
If they can actually get close to 330mph, then we can expect another run to be organized. But I see it as almost as likely that they'll make excuses (e.g. can't get the road closed, weather, etc.) for why it can't happen until people forget and stop caring.

Besides they aren't backed by Michelin. There will never ever be a "re-run", it was just the only exit available. The only thing to stop the flow of new questions adding up for each day. And seems they somewhat succeeded. No public person have in weeks done the power calculation, full power data is available in Stradman's video(if you do it you will get half the power claimed).

@Valkyrie 007 They where running half available boost in Nevada as well? Because numbers come out under half claimed power there as well. Nelson claimed 19 psi in that run. He also mentioned the engine as a "development engine", that's not usually what we put in a series produced car is it? There is a 8800 rpm red-line claim, but this engine have never been close to that on video, and red-line in the car is clearly at 8000 rpm! I have analysed probably 10 videos and it's rarely over 7500 and a single time time touches 7800 rpm (shift 5th to 6th in Nevada).
Why am I talking about rpm? As this car has exactly the same gears and rear tire dimension as the previous record holder they need to go over 8200 rpm in 7th to even tie the existing record! you could probably imagine/calculate the rpm needed to reach 331 mph!
And we haven't even started to talk about homologation, crash tests or reliability/driveability of a 30 psi (claimed maximum boost) car, said to be unstable at 233 mph..

Hi, thanks for the mention of my video! The time difference between medians was 25.2s not 22.5s, so that may explain why your first calculation was off. I used Premiere Pro to get this, the first median was passed at 13:07 and 25 frames (note 25 frames not 0.25s). The second median was passed at 13:36 and 10 frames, and the video was paused for 99 frames. The calculation is therefore (36.333 - 7.834 - 3.3033) = 25.2s. You have to be very careful using Premiere Pro as it shows frames and not fractions of a second.

Sure thing! 22.5s is for the first two medians, 25.2s is for the second two medians. I think we agree on those numbers, as I also got 25.2 seconds for the second set of medians, as you did. For the first two medians, if you go to the top gear video (link - czcams.com/video/N22JfNHiC1k/video.html), at 0:50, you see the first median. At 1:13 (23 seconds later) you see the second median. When I download (I used FCPX) and do frame by frame analysis, I get 22.5s (similar to Shmee).

Excellent video! Great breakdown of all the available data. Like many others, I am starting to wonder if ANY numbers coming directly from SSC can be trusted. Their credibility isn’t what you would call strong right now. A couple of people have posed the question, were it not for clever, intelligent, and observant CZcamsrs like Shmee, Robert, Misha, etc., would this record ever have been called into question. I can’t say with complete certainty one way or the other, but I think it’s entirely possible this could have slipped through with none being the wiser. If the REPORTED top speed had actually been closer to 300mph, I think it might have had an even better chance of sneaking through. It was the absolutely insane jump from the existing record which really drew everyone’s attention, including mine. Rightfully so, that incredible bump also drew extra scrutiny.
I really hate to close on such a pessimistic note, but this whole thing makes me wonder, prior to the careful attention of our trusted CZcamsrs, how many other companies have have fudged data and passed off failed attempts as legitimate achievements?

Loved this video. I am a test engineer myself, and I regularly use DEWE systems, chiefly their DAQ software and supporting hardware. In my experience, it is never these systems causing errors. They are immensely helpful and supply great equipment to work with. I can't praise their systems and support enough.
Setup can be complicated. It can get immensely frustrating very quickly even for simple data collection if things aren't going right, especially when you're burning track time. Quite a bit can go wrong or get overlooked very easily.
Plus, I always felt shame the few times I've realized after a test run that my setup was wrong. Or, if I set it up correctly, but something happened between that setup and the run. It happens.
I wonder how much they reviewed their data, given how exciting it must have felt. When your data agrees with you, it's harder to remind yourself to look through it in depth.
But that's just the $0.02 of an engineer who never tests anything that goes past the speed limit, and wasn't there.

BUT, I believe they are using OXYGEN software. I use DEWEsoft, both belonging to the same company. So don’t quote me. Additionally, the car seems to be one capable speed machine as Jason showed, so a final run at 225 would seem a bit too weak imo.

Jason, another way to calculate: what driving force (thrust) at the wheels does it need to generate for 330 mph? and how much downforce would it require at the rear of the vehicle for the tires to be able to transmit that force without spinning out? Pretty sure you’ll end up seeing that there is no way for the rear tires to provide enough grip with the given aerodynamics. Also, the theoretical top speed based on gearing leaves no room for wheel slip. jason its a scam not an error, the fact that the RPM at 6th gear matches the theoratical data and not the real speed makes me think that the correction factor was there for a very long time, the gearbox is built around it, you can't have a theoratical speed that matches the fake speed unless you used the correction factor in your math, lets say you are converting from mph to ft/s which is very close to the correction factor 1.4666
so they have a problem that is way too deep in their calculations, the simple math isn't that simple after all, they hit 331 .... ft/s not mph tho

Great summary. However, one glaring point that has not been addressed is that since power is proportional to the cube of velocity, and the apparent actual peak calculated speed that the vehicle ran was 224 mph, compared to the theoretical maximum of 345 mph. This represents a power discrepancy of 265%.!! How is it that this vehicle ran flat out for the period in question, and nobody noticed that engine was producing only 1/3 of its power rating then?? How can such a gross discrepancy in apparent power not have been noticed (assuming of course that the 345 mph theoretical Top Speed is real)??

1,750 to the crank. 1.3 megawatts on the valve covers.
The Koenigsegg and SSC both ran opposite directions. You can literally see the mountains in the background of the Koenigsegg but not the SSC because they ran different directions.
Therefore, the distance between the start and the first median is shorter than the last median and the end. So, the SSC had a longer distance to travel than the Koenigsegg.
Next, the driver accelerated to 0-200MPH slowly, at half throttle, you can hear the speed pick up when 200MPH is reached; he goes full throttle.
Moreover, the blurred speedo. The editors blurred it because that speedo stops after 300MPH but the vehicle has no set limiter which is why it accelerated more than 300.
NEXT, measuring the speed. They used their in-house laptop with their logo and their software. They had the Guinness World Record GPS antenna input signal from 15 satellites to measure their speed.
Robert Mitchell and Misha made a video on calculating the speed by gears and RPM. They decided to input 7300 RPM (to give you an idea of speed but the Gear input was off) versus the 8800 MAX RPM its capable, and they wrote 0.784 @ 6th gear which is wrong, it's 0.757.

While calculating the theoretical top speed of SSC Tuatara the transmission efficiency taken is 0.94 but for Agera RS the efficiency was 0.94*0.93 so taking that 0.93 into account and also 70Kg driver's weight Top speed is coming 337mph and taking the same conditions (Air density, Rolling Resistance, and Trans. efficiency) Jesko is giving 331.25 mph (533kph), though Jesko Absolut has less Cd, downforce, and mass, that 110kW extra power of SSC Tuatara will surpass the Jesko. in the top speed test. If Jesko had this 110kW more power it can achieve a top speed of 346.73 mph. Looking into the theoretical calculation, SSC Tuatara can beat 331mph as well.
