I was at the final audition for the Broadway show Rex. In the theater there was Richard Rogers and Sheldon Harnick. The stage manager asked what I was singing...I told him "I have Dreamed" He said"well you'll be the most right or wrong person today" I sang my heart out knowing Mr. Rogers was sitting in the dark of the theater listening to me. They asked me to stay!!!! He liked me. They had a quick Tudor dance number with the rest of the singers. I didn't make the cut. But it was truly one of the most exciting moments in my life
One of the most beautiful of Rodgers and Hammerstein's songs! Unfortunately, it was cut from the film version of “The King and I” though it is included in the LP and CD recordings.
You know, the more I see of Douglas Sills, the more I deeply, deeply want some sort of in-concert DVD thing, just of him. He's really interesting to watch.
Bravo, Douglas Sills! At last someone who who gives credit to this handsome singer with a marvellous voice! Thank you so much. I couldn't believe the YT-er who posted this failed to identify the 'star of the show' in the video, namely the singer! I've searched for this song on CZcams for years and only an excerpt from the film version, with poor sound, has ever come up in my searches. I'm amazed, because this version has been on YT since 2009 and some of the comments date from ten years ago! I'm amazed to discover how poor YT's search function is! I've known and loved this song since I was a little girl, when I used to love listening to my parents' LPs of all the 'original Broadway cast recording's of the famous musical comedies they'd been to see : 'The King and I'; 'My Fair Lady'; 'South Pacific'; 'Carousel'; 'Oklahoma'; 'Peter Pan' (with Mary Martin and Cyril Ritchard as Captain Hook) ; & 'Cinderella,' the only Rodgers and Hammerstein musical written for television, 1965 version starring Lesley Ann Warren and Stuart Damon.
This is my absolute favorite of this song on You Tube. Doug Sill sings effortlessly. From the diaphragm with lovely clarity and timbre and a subtle dynamic. He could blow this selection out of the water but he pulls back and gives it greater power. I watch this video at least once a year to be reminded.
Alone and awake, I've looked at the stars The same that smile on you And time and again, I've thought all the things That you were thinking too I have dreamed that your arms are lovely I have dreamed what a joy you'll be I have dreamed every word you whisper When you're close, close to me How you look in the glow of evening I have dreamed and enjoyed the view In these dreams, I've loved you so That by now I think, I know What it's like to be loved by you I will love being loved by you When you're close, close to me How you look in the glow of evening I have dreamed and enjoyed the view In these dreams, I've loved you so That by now I think, I know What it's like to be loved by you I will love being loved by I will love being loved by you
Okay. Stopping in for my annual listen. I know Sills is still doing broadway. It's apparent to me that maybe he filled in at the last moment or something. Tux doesn't quite fit; shave? no. But when you're a pro (like he is) it doesn't take away from hearing his powerful voice.
He's good, but wouldn't sound as great without the creative genius of Richard Rodgers & Oscar Hammerstein.II and their magnificent King & I score. Singer only as good as the composer.
and your a "killjoy"-give the guy credit-what kind of comment is this- a composer needs good musicians to perform their music and this is an excellent performance!
To be honest this is a good interpretation. Sills has pristine enunciation and tone. However I just don't hear the FEELING, the EMOTION that should come out of a song like this. Tom Jones sings this beautifully in my view with spot on emotional content. Both are good but I prefer Jones version as it DOES NOT Come across bland as this seems to do.
Absolutely beautiful....I'm falling in love just listening to his amazing real true expressions

Beautiful job to a beautiful song
I love the way he sings!
Douglas Sills is absolutely gorgeous!! And the most beautiful voice!!

Beautiful voice! Beautiful song! Handsome man!
I love to watch Douglas Sills! His singing appears effortless and his perfomance is so authentic!
Douglas Sills, you are a magnificent performer. Merci beaucoup'!

I think I just melted inside........! Wonderful! Just wonderful!
I saw Douglas Sills on Broadway in The Scarlet Pimpernel. He was awesome!
He needs to get back in the media for the sake of my soul 🥰

Martin Vidnovic's version in the 1977 revival with June Angela has no peer. None.
Wonderful
Alone and awake, I've looked at the stars
The same that smile on you
And time and again, I've thought all the things
That you were thinking too
I have dreamed that your arms are lovely
I have dreamed what a joy you'll be
I have dreamed every word you whisper
When you're close, close to me
How you look in the glow of evening
I have dreamed and enjoyed the view
In these dreams, I've loved you so
That by now I think, I know
What it's like to be loved by you
I will love being loved by you
When you're close, close to me
How you look in the glow of evening
I have dreamed and enjoyed the view
In these dreams, I've loved you so
That by now I think, I know
What it's like to be loved by you
I will love being loved by
I will love being loved by you
What a fine tenor
