  • From his early days, an elightening and entertaining documentary of that great showman, Mr. Screaming Lord Sutch. Watch out for the footage at the end of his Lordship performing "Jack The Ripper", this is the full version, before the BBC took it's scissors to it, and shows the mock 'murder'. It's all great stuff and a 'Must See' for anyone with the slightest interest in David Sutch. My thanks to Alan C for supplying this video.

Before Ozzie, before Alice, we had the spookadelic Screaming Lord Sutch. Amazing how he attracted so many incredible guitar legends to his band. Way before his time, that guy.

My mother comes from Glasgow and I was lucky enough to visit my grandmother there in the early 60s and I experienced some of this and more. Watching his mother making tea and the pride she had in having a stove that ran on gas or hot water indoors. Steam heat was a luxury, indoor plumbing was just a generation old and not everyone had it. My grandmother had a coal fire to heat her flat. She slept with a hot water bottle in the winter.

I remember back in 1971, I saw him perform at a little music venue in Bexley in South East London, called the Black Prince. I remember him being carried over the audience, in a coffin to the stage, when he started singing inside the coffin. On that night, he actually pulled me up onto the stage, and we attempted to sing a duet. Such good times

I saw him at the White Hall in East Grinstead, he bounced onto the stage wearing a lavatory seat around his neck and a top hat on his head. Then he took off the hat and he had the longest hair of that period. He would leap off the stage into the audience and chase the screaming girls. How he never got thumped by a boyfriend I don't know, but things were different then.

When you think of it and take notice too - mister Screaming LORD SUTCH was actually a good looking guy when all of that make up was off his face - HE could have been a serious teen idol singer contender - Instead HE chose the slap stick / horror stage route to fame - Either way HE was happy with what he did - and that is what really matters , Joe Nania (also known as "Hollywood" Joe ) - - P.S. I also recorded in Doug Moody's MYSTIC SOUND STUDIOS - in Hollywood , California

+Jim M Blackmore stated that, at the time, there were only two bands that were playing the sort of music that he wanted to play - they were The Savages and Johnny Kidd and the Pirates and he would happily have joined either. Most other bands at the time were lightweight Cliff and the Shadows types. He auditioned for the band in 1961 but just missed out, finally getting in in 1962. Considering that they never had a hit record, The Savages earned good money and had stacks of work.

Blackmore had the idea of shock rock before anyone else did, so I think he was looking for some scary crazy band, not happy pop music, so this was his thing, and this was before Rock really developed into what it became in the mid to late 60's.

Blackmore owes Lord Sutch for his showmanship. Lord Sutch made sure to drag Blackmore to the front of the stage and force him to do this 'idiocy' and Blackmore realizing it was entertaining...has kept it in his 'act' to this day. Read up on Blackmore's past before Purple...great, great stuff. He also performed with Joe Meek's bands in that same 'idiocy' roles....Great performers have mentors....Sutch was mentor to many...including Blackmore , Page, Watts, Moon....
