    Another great video Pat, thank you. I was unaware of this menu and so this morning decided to have a play with my i8 roadster (18) here in the UK. The outside temperature was +3°C, and the car performed very similarly to that shown on your video. What did surprise me was how quick both the water temperature and the oil temperature came up to speed. I’ve normally driven 5 to 6 miles to allow the oil temperature to get to a comfortable parameter, but it was pretty much there within 3 miles, even with the outside temperature. Thanks again. Kind, regards, Warren

      FYI, he already sorted it out: it was the head gasket that was causing the overheating, which in turn warped the head.

    Great insightful video Pat. Thanks for putting these out. I’ve been wondering exactly this because I end up on the motorway doing 70mph on a cold engine because I’m on electric till I go over 45mph ish... So on a coolish day before giving the car some beans it’s good to wait about 10 mins before she’s up to temperature right? Do you think for mechanical sympathy I’d be better forcing the engine on before going on the motorway? Or are modern oils so good these days we don’t need to worry about it? Cheers Brij 😉

      Thanks! I definitely recommend warming the engine up before the motorway. I typically use Hold State of Charge in EcoPro mode in order to keep the revs low and warm it up when I leave my driveway. Check out this video on how to do that:

    Thanks for making this Pat! That is interesting that the thermostat opened at 100C. The service manual sez 105C. I did see that at slower/less output driving it was hotter than when you were on it a bit more so that lines up pretty well. Also - Oil temp? I did a search through the service manual for the oil temp sensor and couldn't find it. Do you know where it lives? The engine seemed to take its sweet time warming up. Looked pretty cool out (47F) but I guess I would have thought it would warm up faster. All really interesting! I'll have to throw that up and check it out :) Thanks! F

    • @PatsGarageOnline
      @PatsGarageOnline  Před 3 lety +1

      You're welcome! I poked around for quite a while until I found that the oil-level sensor also has the oil temperature sensor integrated in it, according to the manual. Also, I had the car parked in my garage, thus the warmer temps (about 60F) in the oil/coolant than the air when I started out.

    Hi Pat, thanks for this interesting video - as allways. I think it's a pitty, that the i8 does neither show the oil, nor the coolant temperature on any standard display. I'm wondering if there is any way to display one of the temperatures (oil/water) on the display in the middle as it is e.g. possible for the temperature of the wheels? Any way to program this?

  • @benmarshall787

    Hiya pat, great video the BMW sounds very sporty. I'm a bus driver as a profession and the bizarre way you get to the coolant temp reminds me of some basic dash diagnostics I've "learnt" over the years, our mechanics always have a simple cure for problems and that is turn everything off for 5 mins, then restart. I jokingly add my "magic" word to the equation when doing these procedures, (as a kid a magician called "The Great Soprendo" on TV had a magic "word" for tricks and this is "Piff, Paff, Puff") the magic occasionally works!!! 😁😂, so if you ever get stuck....!!! It's very clever how the thermostat appears to have intelligence as such, does that mean Sam's is broken and is a computer issue? My only other question is on your test drive, I noticed the car was doing about 35 mpg, I know its a, fast car, but shouldn't it be doing more? I would have thought the i8 was on Bernies shopping list for an eco car, though I can imagine him on a push bike instead!!! (nice comedic touch though!)
    Best wishes from West Yorkshire,
    Stay safe. Ben 🚍🚌🚂😁🇬🇧🇺🇲

    • @PatsGarageOnline
      @PatsGarageOnline  Před 3 lety

      Thanks for the kind words. Poor Sam found he had a blown head gasket. That's not common for this motor. Someone must have driven it hard with unbled coolant after the water pump was changed. The car should go to limp mode before it has this kind of damage. But that didn't happen for him. I see 45mpg on short trips but on longer trips 35mpg, due to not having but 16mi of electric range. Still, to get a car that puts 358HP and 455ft-lbs to the wheels and give me good economy, I'm happy.

    Hey Pat, I’m living in Cambodia and my 16’ BMW i8 shipped here from USA without the charging cable and I’m consider getting a 220v level2 aftermarket charging cable, I wonder if it will work with my i8 since there only one option to choose in the setting which is "Level 1 (110v)" and here we use 220v.

    • @PatsGarageOnline
      @PatsGarageOnline  Před 3 lety +1

      Yes, the i8 will work with a Level 2 charger. We have them at public charging stations. As long as it's the right connector it will work. The i8 doesn't support Fast DC charging, only the 220v AC

    • @PatsGarageOnline
      @PatsGarageOnline  Před 3 lety +1

      That's a good question. The front of the i8 has louvers to block the air flow through the radiators as well as one large fan. I may have to do more research to determine the threshold for activation of each. The louvers close to reduce aero drag.
