    Rail staff pay increases = bad due to inflation
    Banker bonus caps being removed = just fine
    MP salary increases = not an issue

      Every industry has had to say goodbye to jobs as a result of improved technology taking over from manpower. Millions of robots employed in manufacturing for just one. Why should the rail industry be any different? Fares are going up and up and up and the total cost of running the trains needs to come down. It's called progress and we've all 'suffered' from it.

      The media have depicted him as some sort of director who tells his union what to do. The reverse is true; he presents the views of the members of his union. Many industries have had their unions weakened by right wing governments & most of the media is right wing. By portraying unions negatively, the media has created a lot of jealousy among those who are poorly represented, although most are unaware of their own jealousy.

They want us to believe that the trade unions are some sort of dictatorship which forces their members to follow a route to their own detriment. Whereas in fact it's every tory government's objective to casualise the work force to divide and rule in the interests of their donors, unions are our only hope of holding the politicians, tory and Labour feet to the fire. Without workers there is no economy simple as that.

    But the companies have their hands tied by DfT (effectively, Sunak). They are not allowed to negotiate freely! If they were, this dispute would have been settled months ago.

    I have a problem in station/s. Without someone around to ask to help me i cannot travel. Stations unmanned considerably reduce my ability to stay Independent. Please keep up the good work Unions. Help me remain Independent. 🌾👍✌️

      Before the government got involved after guaranteed profits during lockdown. All the individuals TOCs negotiated pay rises individually, even down to separate departments. That's why there was no strikes

    Why can we, as pensioners, not go on strike? After all, we do not earn over £60,000 per year and yet expected to survive. Why do Pensioners not have a Trade Union? I am 80 years of age and fighting to keep up with the cost of living despite working my 'guts out' all my working life and never had a day off during that period through illness.

      What are your income and outgoings? State pension will be £11k per year. If you're 80yrs old you've had plenty of time to prepare. You already have the triple lock which is extremely generous. Also you lived through a period where house prices vs wages was in your favour compared to today.

      If more workers were in unions, there would be more paid into the taxes that fund your pension and if you were in a union you'd have a better private pension.
      I'd actually recommend doing a search for any unclaimed private pension pots from your previous workplaces and consolidating them so you can keep track.
      but over the last 13 years the tories have made it a pretty bad time to retire, I hope this changes soon.

    Why don’t all the Unions in Britain form a political party to compete with the Tories and Labour, I’d promise to impose the same rates of pay and conditions on members of parliament that they try to suggest are acceptable to the working population in Britain…if they think it’s good enough for us then they won’t be able to take industrial action or complain..!

      For a 60 hour week working unsocial hours ,weekends and bank holidays with the responsible for hundreds of lives. Contrast that with a sales rep for a drugs company on the same basic for only 35 hour week Monday to Friday.

      I take it that you are either employed by, or retired from the railway, as you appear so well informed.
      I know the drivers are well paid, but they're a minority of railway staff.
      As a regular railway passenger, I am aware the majority of them have been treated terribly by the rail companies.

    This man will be responsible for the closure of the railways. And not before time!
    Railways are a thing of the past. They are too expensive, and unreliable.
    I don’t believe that the railways should be nationalised, as I should not have to be taxed for a service I don’t require, because I don’t use it. If you don’t like your job, change jobs! It’s not rocket science!!
    It is cheaper for me to get a cab to Manchester airport, then fly to London, than it is to get a train. The train will be late, and possibly not even get there. 🤷‍♂️

      There’s not been a payrise for the last 4 years yet ticket prices still increased. The money goes to shareholders and the leasing stock of trains. It’s not because of staff pay rises.

      @@kilokahn_x3850Dont forget that many of the TOCs are owned by overseas operators, Db who oen Arriva are the German state owned railway. The subsidies we pay for UK Rail is used to create a "Profit" for Db revenues which is in effect is subsidising the German network.

      @@dragonfly6908the RMT mostly represent "other grades", most train drivers belong to ASLEF - whdn you consider the number of people carried by the rail it's a big responsibility requiring practical driving, route knowledge and some technical training. It's not just "leaning in a handle" as some people assert.

    But give more money to people in a position to hold the country to ransome.

      Unlikely to happen for a long time. The infrastructure to support that doesn't yet exist and world cost trillions to overlay on our rail network that unlike the DLR, carries all sorts of mixed traffic. The DLR still requires a staff member fully trained in both technical aspects of the rolling stock and ability to manually drive the unit.

      Comparing the Docklands light railway to the Mainline, is like comparing Clapham Common to the Scottish highlands. There won’t be driverless trains on the mainline for many many years, if ever.

    I have read train drivers start on around £38K and many earn over £50K a year, this was on aBBC local news, they are on rails yet a coach driver doesn’t earn anywhere near that, the public don’t support this greedy man, they earn more than train drivers throughout the EU, U.K. railway are a joke.

      A report by the ORR looked into all pay grades on the railway and compared them to comparable rolls and found all railway jobs have comparable pay so yes some are well paid but that pay is justified. The fact you might, let’s face it be jealous shouldn’t mean people do not deserve a payrise after almost half a decade of not having one. And this pay rise shouldn’t be paid for by themselves giving away their pension pots etc. There’s a real world out there ya know.
