  • Is it just high or low? When talking about autism, the labels we use can be more than misleading-they can oversimplify a complex reality. In the world of autism, labels are everywhere. 'High functioning,' 'low functioning,' 'Asperger's,' even 'mild autism.' But what do these labels actually mean, and are they helping or hindering our understanding? Let's unpack the terms and explore what lies beneath them.
Autism is a spectrum. This means it's not a straight line from 'less autistic' to 'more autistic', it isn’t linear, it is more like a colour wheel, a complex collection of characteristics that vary widely from person to person. If someone describes themselves as high-functioning, or as Asperger’s, even though these terms are no longer diagnostic terms in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, they are trying to communicate a set of traits with a label to help people better understand them. In this video I'll share where it gets tricky.

Love the colorwheel analogy and definitely makes more sense than thinking of it as a straight up and down scale where you fall clearly I to one spot. Its even like you have several colors on the color wheel as each color section can represent different aspects and one may have some hue of that color or none at all

Labels do more damage than listening does.
