    Hi Julianne, good video. Think you are well prepared. Only thing I can think of is sunscreen. I know you're wearing a sunhoodie but you'll need it for your face, hands, and legs - even in the Sierra Mtn. That snow can magnify the effect of the sun. Looking forward to your hike. Take care, stay safe. See you next video.

    Your experience from the AT means that you know what works for you by way of kit.
    The sandals tucked in an outside pocket is much better than Crocs slapping around. I hate having anything swinging around my pack.

    Good gear and video. The little knife should have a nail file in it. Its tweezers should be good enough for ticks and splinters. Please carry a large SOL Heetsheet emergency blanket. In the desert you can put it shiny side up to shade you from the sun. This could be a temporary shelter or over your tent to keep it cooler. Happy Trails. Good Luck, Rick

    Even if you don't use it all the time, shock cord can be really handy if you want to dry things while you hike. Not to mention it looks cool and will make your pack stand out from all the similar packs you might run into on the trail. You're going to have a great time! I'll miss the first part of your hike since I'll be hitting the AZT this spring, but I suspect I'll be diving in and catching up on your adventure once I get home. Have fun! Almost trail time!

    Looking forward to great videos. Thoughts from being in SW and Middle East deserts. Hat and Hoodie are great. Better if paired with sun umbrella. We use Hyperlite with slits (7 oz) and hands free pack attachments. Walking in your own 15 degree shade lets you sweat less and carry less water or go further on your water supply. Instant shade if you need to sit down. Desert temperature swing from mid day to night can be more than 50 degrees. Can be shocking. Sweat not noticeable like living in Florida. White powder on face is heavy sweat. Salt tablets or electrolytes are useful. Rain wrap/kilt/skirt useful as rain, wind and cold shield for less than 3 oz. One step at a time. Hang tough!

    @PhoenixGenesis Před 4 měsíci

    Also, you don’t need that many clothing layers as you have a 10F quilt. Last year on the PCT, I had a 40F quilt and sent my down jacket home at Mount Laguna as my Frogg Toggs rain jacket and wind jacket were warm enough. Unless you are leaving in early March.

    Hi Juliane, just a suggestion from a winter hiker in ADK’s and Whites. The exos spikes are for slippery parking lots and flat ground. You need something much more aggressive like the Hillsound trail crampons, which are more aggressive than micro spikes. Some type of mitten also to keep your fingers close together and some hand warmers. I’m getting excited for your hike, it’s gonna be great!

    • @hikingdancer
      @hikingdancer  Před 5 měsíci

      You really think I need crampons?

    • @Hikingin70sshorts
      @Hikingin70sshorts Před 5 měsíci +1

      It’s really going to depend on the snowpack and how comfortable you are on steep snowy slopes. You will definitely be able to move more efficiently with less fatigue with solid traction. You won’t need a full mountaineering crampon, but a hiking crampon that will fit on your Salomon’s. At a minimum you should have micro spikes that have spikes at least 1/4 inch long. Sarah from The Blazing Bakers found out fast in the San Juan’s when she had a close call at the top of a snowy slope, that the Exos Spikes were not sufficient.

    • @lvm3487
      @lvm3487 Před 5 měsíci +1

      This is true, she had to go back down the mountain to get proper spikes. Though I think he means San Jacinto.

    @bigdog2024 Před 5 měsíci

    90% there on gear. You need a spare water filter just in case, spare washers are good but clean water is #1. It’s very little weight. A small but sharp knife where you can easily get to it on the outside seems missing. PCT not much rain? This year is very wet all over the PNW and CA. A small compass,and/or GPS (which I don’t see). Sunscreen, insect repellent are good low weight ideas. Some mild painkillers like Advil or Tylenol for cramps or soreness the first few days along with the Neosporin cream. Something such as vet wrap or elastic bandage to wrap a sprain or add support (your knee for example). Did I see paracord to hang the barrel? Are the headlamp and Garmin rechargeable from the power bank? Foot first aid for blisters as you will need a 2nd pair of new shoes before you finish. Spare socks or liners a good idea as well as spare strings for the shoes. Stuff breaks out there, including your body and little things can be a big deal when you are 100 miles from a town.

    Lukotape: I learned not to wrap Lukotape around my trekking pole during a cold winter hike because the cold will freeze the tape to your pole and won't unwrap when you need it. Instead it will just rip appart while trying to remove a piece. So I like that you put your Lukotape inside your pack because it stays warmer and able to use. A side note: Long power cables lose more power than a shorter cable, per the electronics guy I consult with for such things. Power "leaches" out through the covering on the long cable, before the power ever gets to the item you're attempting to charge. So it's better to carry the shortest cable you can manage.

    I have some kind of a silly question, how do you travel with that axe, pocket knife, neck knife, fuel, etc? Do you flight with your pack as checked luggage? If so, do you put your pack inside another bag or how’s the airport process to protect your pack and it’s content? Excuse my ignorance. I have always wondered this and never been able to find a video that talks about the air traveling process with a hiking pack.
    Sending love ❤
