Many forget but Larry Mac was arguably one of the most hated guys in the garage by the fan base before this race, coming over from Yates many claimed he was purposely sabotaging Earnhardt cause Larry was a ford guy. People would curse Larry as he walked by saying he ruined a legend, but after those 200 laps he became America’s Crew Chief
I never forget watching it live
I was 18 senior in High School. Hard to believe time just keeps racing
As was I! Man, hard to believe now 26 years ago.
I saw his car in person in Daytona usa on the way to Disney world as a surprise stop on the way by my parents got my picture taken in front of the car a moment I'll never forget
I was 11 years old watching live, a fan with 7 years of experience rooting for Dale and going to races, one of the best days of my life, followed by one of the worst day of my life, 3 years later.
There's no other NASCAR moment greater than the 1998 Daytona 500, sure you can think about 1992 Hooters 500, or the 1979 Daytona 500, but the 1998 Daytona 500 is without the doubt the greatest NASCAR moment of all time!!!
Don't forget the 2000 Winston 500 pal and the 2001 Pepsi 400
What made me so overwhelmed with excitement and happiness to the point of tears was knowing how much he wanted this win, how long he waited and how much it meant to Dale. The emotion from the booth to the tribute down pit road!
I still feel the same when I watch it now Wow what a wonderful amazing day. What a unique incredible man this racer who touched so many!

You can tell how much he meant to Mikey and how bad it still hurts him 20 some years later wish things had turned out different
The Oppermans from Texas celebrated the win of our fave with dinner at Outback and steak bites for Sugar Bear and drinks for Jerry and me..Gloria
We came back home and drank a nightcap on the deck and gave leftover bites of steak to Sugar Bear. Such a lovely day and night. Thank you Dale Earnhardt Sr..the Oppermans

So I knew about the Lucky Penny. I did not know it started here.
I will never forget this race. I was 14 at the time. My dad and I, both diehard Earnhardt fans, were jumping and screaming when Dale Sr won that race. That was probably the last time I ever saw my dad get that excited and overjoyed about anything.
God loves the earnhardts and loves the intimidator. there will never be a single one like him. he was unique.

I was five when this happened. I formerly had a step father who was a HUGE Earnhardt fan, and he and my family were yelling and cheering, and I was too, even though I didn't care for him at the time.
I was at work in a clean room when he finally won. My coworker, who was also a huge Earnhardt fan got a call from his wife on the phone we had on the wall. I knew full well why she was calling. We both asked to be told where he finished. As soon as he said she wouldn't say, we both erupted. Cause there was only one reason she wouldn't tell us. Sadly, all I've been able to see is the replays. I was not able to see him finally friggin win it
That was my first ever watching a NASCAR Race on live TV, and Dale Earnhardt went on to win it. Best NASCAR Race ever!

Thats why I miss those old cars, you could swap out a rocker and push rod.. and run the big V8 500 miles
If the car got beat up or banged you could put a new bumper on hammer the sheet metal, and still have a shot at winning..
Now anything happens to these new cars.. they are just Junk so light and fragile
