Viewer Question:
Jerek - Hey John and crew! So I saw over the weekend that David Zaslav had lunch with Steven Spielberg, Christopher Nolan, and Peter Safran, possibly discussing Man of Steel 2. Wow! If this is true, what would a Superman film from Spielberg and Nolan be like? I'm really hoping this is true, Spielberg and Nolan are two of my absolute favorites in the industry. Did you see this story going around? What are you thoughts on this? Thanks!

If Steven Spielberg was ever to direct a superhero movie I don’t think there’s any character more fitting for him to do it with than Superman, yeah Fantastic Four would’ve been cool but Superman feels like he was made for Spielberg, especially with this talk of them now taking the character in more of fun, lighthearted direction I think Steven Spielberg is absolutely perfect for that, I mean can you imagine a Superman movie with the same sense of awe and wonder as Jurassic Park? That’d be incredible, it’d be like seeing a Richard Donner Superman movie in the modern age, and yeah, it’s cool that he’s been able to go off and make these smaller, indie movies/passion projects like West Side Story and whatnot but after all this time it’d be awesome to see Steven Spielberg return to making a big blockbuster movie, he, more than any other big name director out there is a director who I would erupt with joy upon hearing him say he’s throwing his hat into the comic book movie ring, this might just be wishful thinking because it seems like a really tall order but I would absolutely love it
I think he is the one who could make Superman feel cool without morphing him.
I think a lot of people forget Nolan was heavily involved with Man of Steel. It’d be cool if he came back
Imagine if.....get this guys...they were just having lunch and talking about their lunches.
Imagine Spielberg doing a Superman vs Brainiac movie. Literally the most perfect director for this matchup.
war of the worlds vibe
If you can somehow managed to get Christopher Nolan to direct this movie and bring back Hans Zimmer to do the score I think you could easily project this could be one of the best superhero films of all time👀
As much as I am a Nolan fan, I don't want to see a Nolan Superman.
@@ZedElite don't get me wrong I totally understand what you mean, personally I am cool with either a Nolan, Spielberg or Macquarie directed Superman movie
All I care about is brining back that Zimmer score😅
@@OrionInSpace Spielberg would be so perfect.
@@ZedElite I agree definitely good on Nolan.
@@rl8259 I don't disagree
People forget that Christopher Nolan was a producer on Man of Steel.
I want Spielberg to do that Blackhawk movie. He has always wanted to do a WWII film in the style of Where Eagles Dare.
Spielberg's go to composer for decades has been John WIlliams. I know Williams recently retired, but it would be great if Williams returned to score yet another Superman film with Spielberg at the helm. A wonderful swan song for both legends.
After watching spielbergs schindlers list and saving private Ryan I believe if he directed a superman movie he could make something spectacular. And with Christopher Nolan also on the ticket the potential is really potentially amazing . We hope it's about taking super hero movies to a new dimension
Well, Nolan is an executive producer on all the Snyder films, including Man of Steel. If it was Man of Steel 2, it would make sense why he and the president of DC was also there
twenty minutes ago I was like "come on, they were just having lunch, there's nothing here". Now I can't wait for that Spielberg Superman movie staring Henry Cavill 😂
If Spielberg is talking to DC, then it’ll be about his Blackhawk film that’s been in development for a few years.
I actually read that newsletter it was literally two lines. Its hilarious how ppl have taken it and ran with it. I find it far more intriguing that nolan was having lunch on the warners lot after his apparent break in his relationship with the studio. Could he be coming over to WB again?
If he is, I WANT TENET 2.
What if the reason Henry Cavill came back was because he knew that Spielberg and Nolan had signed up to make his Man of Steel 2 :)
Don't forget, Nolan was the main producer of Man of Steel and was a big force behind it. And that film started the DCEU. Makes perfect sense they would meet with him.
Man of Steel lost money. Seems they are making the same mistakes. Do you agree?
@@festo8756 naw if man of steel came out in 2023 it would make a billion easy ppl wasn't ready for that kind of superman in 2013
@@seaniveroni5579 Black Adam is the same film. It's currently on its way to losing a lot of money.
@@festo8756 yea because of political BS the movie was good and fun nothing complicated just straight up superhero movie
@@seaniveroni5579Black Adam is had a 60 percent drop in only it's second week with no competition. what political BS are you talking about?
I really hope Nolan and WB patch things up and give us Tenet II.
I’m not holding my breathe but I’d love for Spielberg to direct a superhero movie.
Nolan was a producer on Man of Steele, I think they were trying to get him to do it originally so he was probably in early development meetings.
Steven Spielberg was tapped to direct the first Superman movie after the success of Jaws (1975) but his version was cancelled and then Richard Donner took over.
Wasn't he also busy with Close Encoutners?
@@BryanRiel I’ve actually surprisingly never seen Close Encounters but want to, he was busy at that time though.
These 'lunches' are standard between execs and creatives, I have no doubt the future of DC and talks of superman were discussed, but I see this as Zaslov trying to build and amend relations between him being the face of WB now and creatives
You give me Superman directed by Spielberg and I’m there.
Peter Safran being there, and the fact that this is less than a week since DC Studios became official, this is definitely a meeting involving "in development" DC stuff 😁😍🤔!!!
Nolan is already an executive producer for man of steel, bvs etc..and he chose Zack..so probably why he's included in the meeting
Nolan already was a producer of Man of Steel 1
The godfather of modern movie making, doing a film for the godfather of superheroes. For the love of all that is holy and good in the world please make this happen
The news here in Nolan talking and (hopefully) making peace with wb. Spielberg is probably serving as a bridge and you know one can dream now of an interstellar sequel by nolan and spielberg 😊
Somebody overheard someone at that table saying the salad was 'superb man' and it took off from there (no pun intended)
Someone misheard “man, this meal” as “man of steel”
The core premise of MoS came from Chris Nolan, but he said he wouldn't be the guy to direct it and that's why he pitched it to Zack. I Hope it's Zaslav asking Chris to pitch the concept of MoS to Spielberg to continue and keep that core premise when he directs MoS 2. Safran is there for the assessment of the production.
Man if Nolan produced this and more importantly, Speilberg directing a Superman movie!!! Just call the movie Man of Tomorrow and cast Tom Cruise as Lex and we got a movie!
Cruise as Lex. Damn. Hadn't thougth about it but is as perfect a casting as RDJ to Tony Stark.
Everyone routinely ‘Forgetting’ MoS was Nolan’s baby! Nolan had to be on board for a MoS2!
Exactly, Nolan brought Snyder in.. Bale was intended for BvS and turned it down.. it was always Nolan's
Spielberg and Nolan were not in the same meeting. Spielberg and Zaslav were eating lunch. Nolan finished his lunch, then joined them, and then Peter Safran walked in. It wasn’t intentionally one big meeting.
I still will never understand how DC have struggled to make Movies of their best characters.
When you consider the writing and direction of their animated TV shows and films, which destroy Marvels animated attempts.
This news only works if Steven and Chris are true fans of Superman and want to wow the world with a movie about him.
Has everyone here forgotten about Spielberg's long rumored BLACKHAWK film? Most likely scenario IMO.
Even If Steven doesn't direct, him being involved as a producer would be a huge benefit. And I don't mean as executive producer, I mean heavily involved.
"They're not talking about 'Lincoln II: The Return!'" LMAO!!!! And yes, John, Spielberg+superhero=GOAT!
Don’t forget that Spielberg is set to direct DC’s WW2 movie Blackhawk. It could’ve been about that.
He’s actually just set to produce. Whether or not he’d direct it has always been up in the air.
wasn't there a report from a few years ago, saying that Steven Spielberg was set to direct a Black Hawk film?
Everyone forgot about Man of Steel genesis?
While making Dark Knight Rises, Goyer pitched to Nolan his Superman idea. Nolan went on to develop the story (he was credited for the story) and it's structure.
You can see Nolan fingerprints all over it. It's non linear story etc. All the differences between MoS and BvS/JL is because of Nolan's involvement and lack thereof.
And Nolan HANDPICKED Zack Snyder to direct.
People always think Man of Steel is Snyder's baby, but that was one of the few times where he was actually just a director for hire instead of building his own project from the ground up. MOS has none of Snyder's signature directing style outside of the camerawork and cinematography. Man of Steel has no slow-motion sequences, and no music video montages. Snyder didn't even write MOS, Nolan and Goyer did. They just brough Snyder on to direct their vision and I think he did a great job with it. The Faora fight scenes were amazing, loved the way he captured her crazy speed against regular people. The lackluster script was all Nolan and Goyer.
Surprised that no-one mentioned that it may be a passion project for Spielberg because Superman is an icon for the comicbook's Jewish roots
spielberg can make nice wholesome-hopeful films so I think it was wise of WB to have him on to plan out something that caters to a large kids-teen-YA audience
Nolan and Steven would be crazy. The script would be so complicated and Oscar worthy
Let's not forget, Christopher Nolan was a producer on MOS
And co writer
Honestly a Steven Spielberg superman directed movie would be great.
It’s Monday. I think by Thursday we will hear news of who is going to be directing the new Superman film.
What about this?
Men of Steel 2 - Directed by Spielberg
The Dark Knight Returns- Directed by Nolan
The Dark Knight Returns with Bale or Affleck?
@@buntyskb bale obviously
It absolutely would be a dream come true if Steven Spielberg were to direct a Superman movie! I sincerely hope it's more than a rumor!!
@@ChienaAvtzon I understand that it's a rumor.
My guess is Blackhawk, not Superman. Blackhawk is a past DC Comics superstar 1940-60s, number 2 in sales, after Superman.
Like John said, they definitely discussed Superman. Christopher Nolan was a producer on Man of Steel.
Marvel is in some serious trouble. They haven’t put out a good movie or show in 3 plus years. DC is about to show the world how superhero’s are supposed to be done.
DC already showed the world how superhero films are made with Dark Knight Trilogy and now they will show it again.
There so much you can do with a Superman movie and if Spielberg and Nolan are involved putting depth in this movie with Gunn supervising the project being a big fan of the source material. IF and that's a big IF this is true it's huge news and I couldn't be more excited
Man of Steel 2 in IMAX with Hans Zimmer score 🤤
If people forgot, Nolan produced Man of Steel
also people forgot he quit and got away from wb so that would be hilarious if he went right back even if the name is different
People also forget that Man of Steel original story was by David S. Goyer and Christopher Nolan.
Nothing against Spielberg, I loved his movies but as great as Spielberg is as a director I don't really know if he would be the kind of director for a character like superman. I loved Nolan's batman trilogy but him DIRECTING MOS 2? Ok that could be a better and more "appropriate" choice, considering Nolan himself asked Zack Snyder not to watch the theatrical JL. But the good thing about Nolan directing MOS 2 is that he would probably maintain the tone of MOS but adding the "joy" and "happiness" that Henry Cavill is talking about
I've never seen anything approaching joy and happiness in any Nolan film.
@@seanyoung9014 yeah I know, but as a fan I wouldn't like that approach in a "Christopher Reeve" style. I loved Christopher Reeve as superman but (again as a fan) I, and We, don't need that every new version of superman somehow resembles that '70 version. Let's remember that Henry Cavill said thay MOS left the character with a lot of room to grow and we've seen a bit of that in Zack Snyder's JL
@@seanyoung9014 Lmfao you watch movies with eyes closed or watch Snyder movies thinking its Nolan. Haven't you seen Dark Knight Trilogy or Interstellar ? all of them had moments of joy and emotions.
@@lincoln2324 Exactly, the tone that Man of Steel set should continue but with little bit of joyfulness.
With both Speilberg and Nolan involved with DC m, they would be an unstoppable force.
they would be stomping marvel
Zaslaf told them... y'all make Superman for me.... I'll make any movie y'all want for you!!!!! Clear as day!!!!
I think if they discussed Superman or DC movies it would be likely about setting a settled tone- Spielberg's relationship with Donner (he executive produced Goonies) and Nolan as a producer of the first Man of Steel probably WB is trying to see the direction they want it to go in.
Definitely think there is something there. Cavill is full of joy when talking about Superman future
My only concern is will Spielberg use the John Williams score or the Hans Zimmer one 😉😃
Hans Zimmer or we riot
Hans Williams ftw
If Spielberg does this to honor Donner this could be so amazing.
A spielberg superman movie? Yessssss!!!!
Wishful thinking and obvious speculation, we’re talking about two titans who really adore the Superman character.
Back in the day Spielberg almost directed Richard Donnor’s Superman before he went to direct Jaws. Nolan has always admired Donnor’s Superman and cited it as the blueprint when making Batman Begins, and he went onto producing all of Zack Snyder’s DC films.
I really believe these guys would at least be interested in being attached to a Superman film, whether it’s entirely possible is another story but boy I really hope it would be.
Dunno if this was mentioned but what if the talk wasn’t Superman but the Blackhawk movie Spielberg was developing.
If Steven Spielberg was to Direct Man of Steel 2. The script has to be very good, all the actors need to bring their A game. WB needs Man of Steel 2 to join the billion dollar club.
It would definitely make a billion unless it’s awful but I think it would have a really good opening
@@theenigmaalie2792 Exactly all Zack needs is a good script. He is a great visual director.
@@1969Makaveli I wouldn’t go with zack with what David and Henry have said they want more of a pre crisis Superman and that goes against zack so I’d go with someone else who can do the Superman right I’m sick of hearing we need a evil Superman’s it’s like go watch the boys go watch invincible go watch bright burn we don’t need the main universe Superman to be evil if they are doing a live action injustice where Superman man is evil fine but that story is still the main justice league vs the evil one’s but it depends I got way off topic here
This needs to happen!
If this is going to happen, fandoms will melt with pure joy.
Spielberg probably wants to do Blackhawks.
What do always say John, it's never a bad thing to add talent ‼
A Spielberg Superman would not only be great, but fun. He would do the character so much justice because he understands who Superman is supposed to be. This is wishful thinking, but man is it a fun thought!
I love Ready Player One 2018 & The Dark Knight 2008
Love John & His Sports Analogies 😂
Lets do it!
OK, so many thoughts on this. First off, Spielberg and Nolan are both in my top three favorite filmmakers of all time, so I would love to have been in that meeting just to get to talk to them and pick their brains a little bit.
Second of all, Christopher Nolan not only produced but also worked on the story for Man of Steel. I don't think it's that far fetched to believe they were talking about Superman because he was directly involved in the production of the first film. It makes sense that they would at least consult him on where it would make sense to take this iteration of the character in a followup film. Doesn't mean he'll be directly involved the second time around, but it might mean that.
Third, and this is just wild, fanboy speculation that has no basis in reality whatsoever. We know John Williams is retiring after Indiana Jones 5. HOWEVER, if there is one thing that could convince him to put that retirement on hold to do just one more movie, it's his buddy Steven Spielberg directing a Superman movie. Furthermore, WHAT IF they somehow convinced Williams and Hans Zimmer to work together on the score. Again, pure speculation here, but you make Man of Steel 2 (or call it Superman or Man of Tomorrow, whatever) starring Henry Cavill, directed by Steven Spielberg, produced and with a story by Christopher Nolan, and with a score by John Williams and Hans Zimmer, that's a movie that would make a killing at the box office.
So, in conclusion, did they discuss Superman? I'll take the over that they did. They'd be stupid not to at least consider that option.
What a combo 🤯
Ready Player One sequel? Maybe? But yeah Man of Steel 2 with Speilberg and Nolan would be something legendary!
I dont think spielberg would direct it.. he would have a hand in it just as he did the first transformers.. as 2nd director or probably just executive giving out ideas.
Nolan already did a lot of work for Man of Steel and Produced it, so Nolan being on Board is MASSIVE! Way bigger than Spielberg being attached! 🔥
You lost me at the phrase "fans have taken to Twitter to speculate"
It's a nice idea. It might have been a nice lunch, too. That's all.
Nobody talked about Super 8... Produced by Steven Spielberg 👍👍
People forget that the original story was created by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer. which was then adapted.
@@ChienaAvtzon Man of Steel was epic and as soon as Nolan left, it went downhill with BvS and JL. Stop hating Nolan for Snyder's mistakes.
Isn't Nolan credited as producer of Man of Steel?
Yes
he pretty much develop that whole movie, and even hired Zack Snyder for it. so yeah, Nolan has been involved in superman before, this might not be the first time as John is talking about it here
@@v-trigger6137 yeah I was shocked to hear John say it and the funny thing is he loves MOS
Why can't they just hire Matthew Vaughn already? He had an excellent pitch for a Superman movie and he's proven he can make great comic book movies. I imagine he and James Gunn would get along well.
I’m sure they wanna get a top tier director for their biggest character. Matthew Vaughn would be great for something else
No mention that Nolan was involved in the first Man Of Steel, possible reason for his involvement?
Assuming they are talking about making a movie
Is like...holy shit!
Just the fact Nolan is talking with them...holy shit!
Just the idea Spielberg making a DC Superhero movie...holy shit!
Idea of Nolan and! Spielberg working together to make a DC superhero movie.....holy shit!
Idea of that superhero movies being a Superman one....holy shit ..
That Superman movie staring Cavill... holy shit!
Just everything about it 🤯
With the MCU's quality decreasing so far, this is a chance for DC to try to catch up with marvel.
Warner_Discovery couldnt catch up with Marvel. Crawl / Walk / Run / Fly.
@@hawkzulu5671 i don’t know, the way mcu has been lately
@@bryannepeguero6747 compared to who or what? XD
MCU has been trash lately
I doubt the meeting was about Superman, but rather the studio trying to mend bridges that were burned by the previous execs, especially with Nolan. Maybe they're considering starting up a stable of directors who can carry the studio name further, like in the Old Hollywood Days.
If we assume it is in fact over Man of Steel 2 (and not Spielberg's long efforts to do a Blackhawk Squadron movie based on the DC comics) - I am 100% behind that choice, because at that point, if were getting the guy that did the early Indy films, even Hook - then yeah I think we get the right balance and depth that Cavil clearly blows away all the other Supermen.
However - Nolan is a hard pass and 'please keep him 10 miles away from the production and block all his calls automatically'. I think the Nolan films are good - not as good as many others make them out as but still on the upper end of the scale. And what he did works for Batman, his usual tone, works for Batman. And while I know that some, like John, love Man of Steel - I don't, and it can't be denied that it was a divisive film, and Nolan did the story for it. If you want to bring Nolan on for more Batman maybe, but I'd honestly rather see him tackle someone like 'The Question' or even 'Black Canary' - especially because he could likely show the restraint to have her be an excellent hand to hand fighter and excellent at investigating and covert stuff without her having to use her canary cry every 10 minutes, maybe only a couple times when it's absolutely necessary.
Nolan would bless Superman. He changed the way we look at super heroes in film forever. 100% trust in Nolan for this.
Man of Steel was Nolan's Superman. He co-wrote the story with Goyer and produced it. It's also the only production from his company, Syncopy Inc., that he didn't direct.
The stars aligning
I think they discussed a Justice League movie. To hire Spielburg, Nolan, or both costs a fortune, so the movie(s) must be HUGE. Huge in terms of importance to WB and huge in terms of WB's guess as to how much money it'll make.
I’d be down for this!
Let's go!!!
Would John Williams come out of retirement for both Spielberg and Superman?
If it true then ❤and I truly hope so fingers crossed 🤞
Nolan writes the story, Spielberg rewrites and directs and Nolan produces with Safran helping coordinate between other projects. All the pieces are there.
If Spielberg turns this down there are others who I can think of. Since Mr. Cavill wants a more joyful approach to the character maybe another legend like Ron Howard could do it. Brad Bird, Christopher MacQuarrie, Joseph Kosinski, or Matthew Vaughn. Superman needs the Winter Soldier treatment. Joe Johnston directed the first Captain America movies but the Russo Brothers directed the ones that changed peoples’ perception of the character for the better. Superman needs to move beyond Mr. Snyder’s vision the same way Cap moved beyond Joe Johnston’s.
Wow if this becomes true.. this movie will be epic! And I just can’t wait to experience it🙌🏻
Might just be what John proposed towards the end and Zazlav just wanted to get to know the industry better. Why bring the new guy in? It doesn't hurt! And he is also the co-ceo of a studio!
Just imagine a superman movie directed by Spielberg and produced by Nolan, where it takes place on earth and space, and features Brainiac.
Yes. It's time. People understand the matrix.
Think every one forgets it was Nolan that brought Man of steel to zack snyder
There's only a mention of a Superman movie, but nothing about a Henry Cavill led Superman movie. Does anyone know if Spielberg even likes Cavill's Superman? I won't be shocked if he casts a new actor to fit his vision of the man of steel.
If this was true, my head would instantly explode.🎉
