Guns and Roses had a hard deal when Nirvana became popular. GNR succeeded where others (like Metallica, Def Leppard, Megadeth, etc) couldn't compete.
We think it was nostalgia for 80's hair band rock that people clung onto GNR long after this type of music too a back seat following the revolution that Nirvana ushered in.
What was the title of GNR's album after Kurt died? Something like "The Spaghetti Incident"? Total embarrassment. GNR was KIA after Kurt died.
GNR was like the only active band that resisted and lasted after Grunge came to town, but they didn't last too long. It was like a death spiral, watching the landscape of Rock change into another era. It was like the "Changing of the Guards" in all honesty. After which, Metallica cut their hair and became radio friendly, much to the dismay of the bygone 80's.

I can still remember the first time I heard the album Appetite for Destruction in the late 1980s!! My musical tastes in those days went along the lines of heavy metal and some hair metal bands stuff like Van Halen Iron Maiden Motley Crue to name a few!! Friend of mine suggested that I listen to Appetite for Destruction and I was instantly in love with the album and the sound!! Guns'n'roses really hit the scene like a ton of bricks seemingly coming from out of nowhere to become one of the greatest rock bands from that era!! Their downfall was Axl's ego and drug addiction!!!

1980s music was so full of fun and energy. The bands always performed to their best, and growing up as a teen in the 80s was a blast. Sneaking out of the house to drink a beer in the "Pines", hitchhiking to concerts in Detroit and making it home JUST in time for our parents to wake us up on Saturday morning. Making new friends at concerts was a blast. No fear of someone being stupid in the crowd and killing someone like now. Just dancing, singing, and partying. I'd relive those years in a heartbeat.
