Bon Jovi has been around nearly 40 years. Their first hit, "Runaway", debuted in 1984. They become world famous in 1986 when they hit #1 with "You Give Love a Bad Name". "It's My Life" was released in 2000. And they are STILL GOING. Jon Bon Jovi will hit 60 years old next spring, and he's as down-to-earth as he was on Day One.

The lead singer is Jon Bon Jovi. The device that the guitarist is using to create the sound you mentioned is "talk box." The sound of his guitar is split with one channel going to the regular guitar amps. The second channel is routed to the talk box were the guitar sound is ruined thru a tube and is anchored next to the guitarist microphone. When the talk box is activated, the guitarist puts the tube in his mouth and the guitar sound comes into his mouth where he can morph the sound by talking or just changing the shape of his mouth.

Tommy and Gina are two fictional characters created by Bon Jovi. We first heard their names in the "Livin' On A Prayer" song and now in this song. The two characters are mentioned in several Bon Jovi songs. Also, it's cool to know how he mentions Frank Sinatra in this song, "Like Frankie said, I did it my way." It's a callback to "My Way" by Frank Sinatra. The thing Richie Sambora is using to create those songs is a talkbox. After Bon Jovi used it in "Livin' On A Prayer" other rock bands started to use it too.

Not a huge BJ fan but this song has 2 of the best opening lines in Rock. "THIS AINT A SONG FOR THE BROKEN HEARTED. NO SILENT PRAYER FOR FAITH DEPARTED". The complete opposite of most songs singing about love and sympathy, Jon makes it clear this ain't a song for the depressed and broken. He has no time. It's his life.

  • @janiceduke1205

The line "Like Frankie Said, I did it my way" is a reference to Frank Sinatra, who sang "My Way." Sinatra was from New Jersey, just like Bon Jovi. The line "For Tommy and Gina, who never backed down," is a reference to their 1986 hit "Livin' On A Prayer," which featured Tommy and Gina as young people trying to get by in tough times.

Livin' On A Prayer was released in 1986, this one was released in 2000. Both songs refer to "Tommy and Gina" as the main characters, and in this video those are the names of the two characters on screen. The actor playing Tommy is Will Estes (Jaime Reagan in the CBS Series "Blue Bloods"), who was offered the part of Tommy in this video after he and Jon Bon Jovi (The lead singer of the band) starred together in the film U-571.
It's my life, it's now or never! I ain't gonna live forever, I just wanna live while I'm alive! (It's my life)
My heart is like an open highway, like Frankie said "I did it my way!". I just wanna live while I'm alive!
Jon bon Jovi had to to fight to keep this verse in the song. It refers to the Frank Sinatra tune "I Did It My Way". "Frankie" was Sinatra's nickname in the Rat Pack with Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford, and Joey Bishop. Bon Jovi was a huge fan and wanted the line, but the studio was afraid audiences wouldn't get it - turns out they didn't, and it didn't matter in the slightest because this song ROCKS!
Thank you so much for your reaction videos! I am loving watching your appreciation of music I've loved all my life (born in 1971) and thank you for keeping it alive!!

The instrument Richie is using to make the sound is a Talk Box. It's a tube that feeds from his mic down to his guitar, so he can literally talk the sound of his guitar, he can modify the sound via his mouth. Bon Jovi released their first album, titled Bon Jovi, in 1984- it has some classics on there too like Runaway.

I've listened to all the old groups from the 60's while riding around on my schwinn bicycle with my friends, listening to AM radio on my transistor radio. Saw the BeeGees, the Eagles, Kiss, Chicago, 3 Dog Night, Creedence, etc.... live in Portland, Oregon or Seattle, Washington. Still listen to new and old artists. You guys are so damn cute, and sweet, and genuine. Love your VIBE! Jon Bon Jovi is one of the best artists of any time, or genre. He was inducted into the Rock and roll hall of fame about 7 years ago. He was born in 1962 which makes him 59. You guys should read up on the groups or artists that you react to on Wikipedia. There are now 3 or 4 'Soul Kitchens'. There is a menu but with no prices. If you can afford to pay for your meal then great - if you can't, that's fine. You can clear tables, wash dishes - whatever. You eat whether you have money or not. He also built and stocked a food bank during the early days of Covid. Rolled up his sleeves and got his hands dirty. He didn't have to do that. He could have just paid for it and let others do the dirty work. The best part - Soul Kitchen, homes for the homeless, foodbanks - he doesn't shout about it like some 'stars' do. He just gets it done

The lead singer is John bon Jovi, the band itself is called bon Jovi. Been around since about 1980 without me looking it up. He and his bandmates invested most of their money in savings and stocks every time they were paid. He was one of the first rockers who required that of his coworkers because so many people in the music industry had blown their music money I've been ripped off by their managers. He was going to make sure that everyone associated with is a group came out with a very stable lifestyle if their popularity dropped. Very smart man.

Living On A Prayer was 1986 (Jon was only 24). It's My Life is 2000. Jon Bon Jovi was still only 38 in 2000, The Guitarist was only 40. . They absolutely rocked from mid 80s till early 2010s.
Many agree that their best album is 1995's ''These Days''. 2005's ''Have A Nice Day'' Is their most poprock album. Their music adapted with the style of every decade. 80s Bon Jovi is really different from 90s Bon Jovi which is REALLY different from the 00s. Thats what i like about them.....They re-invented themselves their look and sound throughout eras.

This song was early 2000s and was a BANGER when I was in high school(?). My parents exposed me to a lot of Bob Jovi’s music from the 80’s and this helped reintroduce them to the newer generation. I’m pretty sure the lead singer, Jon Bon Jovi, even had a run in Country Music after this run in the early 2000s. You gotta check out “Dead or Alive” by Bon Jovi.

My favourite band since Slippery. I am Richie's age and my niece, who is 26 years younger than me - became a fan when Bon Jovi released this single. She kept telling me how cute Jon is...Jon and guitarist Richie Sambora were the perfect duo, writing pretty much all of the songs together and singing in perfect harmony. Bon Jovi pioneered unplugged performances and they have some really great unplugged versions of Wanted Dead or Alive and Living on a Prayer, featuring Jon and Richie and 2 guitars.

The tool that the guitar player uses is called a "Talk Box" which is a kind of a mouth controlled synthesizer that changes the sound of a guitar or other instrument.... Joe Walsh and Peter Frampton are well known for using it.... For a REALLY good example try listening to Frampton's "Do You Feel Like I Do?"

And they certainly did with their next album "Slippery When Wet"..!!

I went to tha!t "Slippery when Wet" concert tour, & it was sold out & Crazy fun... what's funny about it now, is it was the First time I ever heard of the Opening Band, who also blew up & became a big fan of... A little band called "Cinderella "...!! You should check them out as well....😃
