Find out as Bill's wife, Joanne shares stories of his acting exploits and of their long romance and marriage in this exclusive interview, recorded November 2021. Actor William Smith (1933-2021) is probably best known as the evil "Falconetti" in the hit mini-series RICH MAN, POOR MAN, but his memorable villainous roles may have caused fans to overlook his other talents. Joanne recalls Bill's being cast on the penultimate GUNSMOKE episode, "Hostage" (1972) in which his character "Jude Bonner" has his way with Miss Kitty. In addition to starring in the popular comedy western series LAREDO, Bill spoke 5 languages fluently and had considered a career in the service. A contract with MGM changed his vocation and he spent much of his life portraying a series of nefarious characters in over 300 film and TV episodes. Always in demand, Bill was a published poet and friend to his many fans and co-workers. Afflicted with Dementia, Bill retired from acting and appeared at many autograph and book signings.

My dad is Peter Brown. He loved Bill. I think Bill was one of his few true friends in Hollywood. I remember being on set with him when they were making Bill's movie Gentle Savage. He was always so nice and fun to be around for me as a little kid. I remember him laughing a lot. I'm sending lots of love to everyone in Bill's family and everyone who cared about Bill.

@@marcomustang876 he lived to 80. Had a few health issues at the end that took him down. Fortunately it went pretty quickly and painlessly.
Was truly sad when I heard William Smith had passed. He was such a wonderful actor. So happy to hear he had such a loving caregiver in his final days.
You can see how deeply she loves and admires him in her expressions, the whole time she speaks of him. The way someone speaks of the person they just fell in love with💔

My uncle worked with this actor at a Chevron gas station . He use to tell everyone he was going to be an actor and everyone laughed at him . This was Burbank / Glendale . This was the story every time they saw Bill on TV !! My uncle Bob was amazed every time he saw him on the screen 📺

Bill Smith was instantly recognizable. It’s good to know that his background was so diverse, a very intelligent man.
Met him numerous times at shows and he was just the greatest! Always a fun time hanging around with him. He was awesome and Joanne was an angel that watched out for him. Two classy people! Miss that guy!

Even in his light-hearted role in an episode of "The Dukes of Hazzard", he was so intimidating. Scared me as a kid. What an accomplished man, very talented.

Maybe the thing that kept William Smith from being a leading man was that he was just too good as the bad guy. I remember him from "Laredo", but I especially remember him as the bad guy in so many movies and TV shows, especially those biker flicks. To me, it wasn't his imposing physique, but his cold, psychotic stare that was so intimidating. He was one of the best there's ever been at what he did. So nice to hear he was such a great person in real life, and he is truly missed. Thanks for the interview, Rob and the "Stoney Burke" pilot. A great tribute to a great actor!

As a child of the 80's I loved seeing William Smith in movies and TV shows, including reruns from the previous decade. Whenever he appeared on screen, we all knew something bad would happen. He will be missed!

I met William Smith in New York at one of the last shows he did to promote his book of poetry. I took the bus up to New York. I could tell he wasn't doing well. But I got my picture taken with him and bought his book and we had a soul handshake. I talked to his wife and helped identify a picture of him in a role from "Felony Squad". I've seen so many of his shows . So sad to hear of his passing. Alex Cord passed a couple of months later. He was another actor I really liked. RIP both of them.

William Smith was an absolutely amazing guy. Boxing champ and arm wrestling champ in the army, bodybuilder, and genuine tough guy. A true renaissance man, brilliant ,he Spoke many languages fluently , In later years taught classes in UCLA.
Joanne seems like such a lovely person. I'm so happy for her that she met such an interesting and caring man. Her memories were so interesting to listen to. Bill was wonderful in everything he did. It sounds like she took good care of him when he became sick.

I always loved the scene in "Any Which Way You Can" bar fight. The man can act! As to the 5-12 spoken languages, acting, poetry, the term is self actualized. Literally, a sum greater than all your parts, and what makes a great person, more human.
In that scene, I love his intense, steely eyed delivery of the line, “ But you’ve gotta be durable too - real durable…and most ain’t.”
Wow she is a wonderful individual and wonderfully spoken to visual. I like someone else said you can see the love for him as she speaks of him in her eyes and her expression her face. Her smile. The memory she must have as she speaks of him as well. I'm so glad I got to see this interview it's a special treat for me. May God bless her always. To me the man was an icon. And I wish to thank him and his family for his service as well.🇺🇸❤🙏

I loved westerns and films from the 60s and 70s as I was a kid watching those growing up. In fact I am named after one of those other iconic western actors (Lorne Greene). Needless to say my parents were huge Bonanza fans. I became one too of course!
Surprised to learn that I know of he was never in an episode of Bonanza knowing that he was in Gunsmoke, The Virginian and Laredo amongst so many other different series.
William Smith was the iconic bad guy's bad guy! And what a prolific body of work he had! You know he was a great actor and easy to work with when you see the sheer amount of work he did!
He was one of the guys who played his part so well you seriously cheered whenever "the good guy" won and beat him.
I guess that goes to show you that the reason we loved to hate him on screen was because he was such a great actor and so convincingly played his parts!
It was great to see this interview with his "angel" wife Joanne showing the multi-faceted human being that William Smith was.
Finding out what an intelligent, multi-lingual, poet and such a downright giving nice great guy was such a treat. Thanks Joanne for sharing your time and insight behind this great actor and helping us to be able to get to know the man behind iconic bad guy actor we all have enjoyed watching over the years.

I had the biggest crush on Bill in The 70’s. I was just a kid then. And I always thought he was the best-looking man. Enjoyed seeing him in so many roles. He was magnificent! I am so sorry to hear of his passing. What a terrible loss.

Mr. Smith was not just an accomplished actor but also an impressive career background prior to acting. He was a very intelligent man.
Very appropriately played Conan’s father. I have to imagine him and Arnold discussed bodybuilding techniques. His appearance (not sure how many episodes in appeared in) in the Rockford Files was also very memorable.
That scene in Conan is actually really good acting in my opinion. He speaks to the young already stoic Conan. I think it's brilliant because he conveys love for his son , but also instills in him that he can't rely on on men or beasts, he must trust in himself and the weapon he weilds.

Agree 💯% he did Arnold before Arnold Schwarzenegger did Arnold..! He had way to much for the A list actors of that time... I heard some actors had platform shoes or had door frames lowered to stand next to the women in the shot... Not many athletic male actors either but it there was lots of smoking going on... Absolute legend. I really liked William Smith's role in "Any Which Way You Can" Who else besides Clint Eastwood could portray a fearsome bare knuckle street fighter who was polite, well spoken, and had no interest in gratuitous violence? These guys spent half an hour beating the crap out of each other and then walked off like they were the best of friends.

I didn't know that he was a child actor too with roles in Meet Me In Saint Louis and The Song of Bernadette. What a talented actor and what a well rounded, educated one too. I had no idea that he spoke and wrote five languages and NSA clearance. I was shocked to see that he was playing heavies into his 60s and looked at least a decade younger. It's nice to see this interview and how much his wife loves and misses him. You can see the pride when she's speaking about him.
I read that he was also in The Boy With Green Hair, but I never did catch him.

I remember watching William Smith in Rich man Poor man , when i was a kid in the 70's.
Bill was a great character actor. We as a family would sit and watch and enjoy Rich man
Poor man, he made the series what it was. When ever we saw him in a film or tv series.
We knew we were going to be entertained. Loved what ever film and TV he did always enjoyed
watching him. He sounds like a real renaissance man.
You have to be a really good actor to be a villain. I was struck how good looking he was.

I got to meet Bill and Joanne in Cleveland in 2005 and they couldn't have been nicer but sadly noticed the early stages of his dementia. He still had an 18-inch bicep which he proudly flexed and was working out six days a week on a split routine (upper body one day, lower body the next). Then a couple of months later briefly got to see them at the Memphis Film Festival. My favorite role of Bill's was as the fearsome Terry Bartell in "Darker Than Amber" (1970) where the film ended with a legendary fight scene between Bill and Rod Taylor. Bill said he suffered three broken ribs doing that scene but it stands as the greatest (IMHO) ever committed to film.
On a final note, Joanne was indeed Bill's angel guiding him through those latter years of his life. RIP Bill. You gave us many grand moments of thrilling cinema and TV.

That's a shame that Bill started developing cognitive problems as early as 2005, especially considering that he and Joanne didn't marry until 2001. That's pretty sad.
I met him and Joanne at one of the western festivals. I got to talk with them a bit. I bought his poetry book and I love it! I asked him, since he had played an Indian sometimes if he had any Indian blood in him. He chuckled and said "Not a single drop!" He was so courteous and interactive. It's sad that he left us so early. All that intelligence could be used these days! Thank you Bill for all the good memories, and to his beautiful wife for sharing him with us and the memories that only she can share. God bless.

As for William Smith, he was near as I can tell, a legit tough guy. I read where he was a very successful amateur boxer with 100+ wins. He's an excellent example of a man who developed himself physically, and intellectually. Lots of of consistent hard work there.
I remember seeing him when I was a kid in the biker exploitation movies of the 70s, CC & Company being my favorite. I was big Namath fan, too.
Lastly, Mr Smith's mustache should have won an award. Best 70s Fu Manchu 'stache in the history of mankind.

Back in the late 70's Bill Smith used to come into the Torrance Pep Boys where I worked. At first I was intimidated since I only knew his bad guy screen persona. But then I got to know him for the nice man that he was.

I met William Smith a few times when he lived in Marina Del Rey in the 80s. He struck me as a very nice man. So happy he found this nice lady when he did. Both are a class act.

This was brilliant. The interview was great, followed by a great tv-episode. Good banter between the two police chiefs.
The Bad guy is as important as the so called good guy. Takes two awesome actors to evoke such strong emotional context in any movie. When William was on the set he was the guy that you would love hate. He was just that good of a presence. Seems he carved out a great life and to be teamed up with a good woman is the icing on the cake.
One of the actors and crews that gave us such wonderful entertainment and ways to "escape" over the years. Glad he had a good life and found love.
I remember his great portrayal as the villian in the ground breaking mini-series "Rich Man Poor Man." I also appreciated his devilish sense of humor on "Laredo."

William Smith is and ALWAYS will my favorite actor. I was born in '67, when Laredo ended. The reruns were playing when i was in 6th grade. Bill Smith made such an impression that whenever he popped up in a movie I was watching, it automatically became "a William Smith movie" to me. I felt that, of all the people watching that movie, I knew Bill personally. LOL!!! Yeah, i know...but he seemed like a real genuine person to me.

Thank you for the wonderful entry in your series. I am embarrassed to say I didn’t know of Mr. Smith’s passing. What makes this more unsettling to me is that “Whispering Bill Smith” is/was (never sure quite how to say that) one of my favorite actors and personal heroes. If he gave a bad performance, I never saw it. Even in some of the low budget movies he made I always felt he never “phoned it in”. I knew some motorcycle people that were in a Club back in the day and they all spoke highly of “Whispering Bill” (their road name for him). They sometimes would go on rides together and they stated, in the motorcycle world, he was the real deal, their highest compliment. I could go on and on about his performances, but, somehow I really appreciated his role in the original Red Dawn. I thought he brought a real “menace” to the part and I enjoyed when he was able to use a small portion of his foreign language skills. Thank you for also interviewing his lovely Bride. What a beautiful courageous woman both inside and out. My sincerest condolences and best wishes to her. Without a shadow of doubt, Bill's portrayal of Falconetti, was the finest baddie. I watched the whole series , on my own, in '76 . I was only fourteen, but I loathed him, hated him ! When he got beaten up on the ship.....wooow...outstanding. I always found him frightening ever since ! Wish I'd met him to tell him he was the best bad guy ever . A testament to his acting .

William Smith was a great bad guy. He could have been the lead in a lot of shows. But, he was just so good as the bad guy that he was type cast in that role.
