    The reaction of the civillians range from laughing (girls in first video), camera guy giving thumbs up, people annoyed at the umbrellas flying up(pilot was landing nearby so not his fault entirely) None of them look terrorised.

      @@S.Hunter279If I had to guess for the flares, they were probably automatically set off by the Ka-52’s IR receiver, since modern phones use infra-red technology on their cameras. Quite possible the Ka-52 detected this and auto deployed flares.

    • @S.Hunter279
      @S.Hunter279 Před měsícem

      @@rebelliousfew I'm not an expert on smartphones or flares but the explanation seems far-fetched. To begin with, the anti-aircraft missile has a passive IR detector. It does not emit a signal, but it homes on the heat produced by the aircraft. To counter this threat, the helicopter drops flares that burn at a very high temperature, producing a large amount of heat which directs the missile away from the aircraft. As far as I know, military aircraft have missile approach warning systems (MAWs); these do not detect the IR signal from the missile (because there is none) but the heat produced by the rocket itself. Once a missile is detected, an alarm sounds in the cockpit and the pilot manually activates the flares. If this happened automatically, the helicopter would start firing flares anytime it passes over a source of heat, such as a large fire which one would encounter over a battlefield. Finally, although smartphones do use IR technology in their cameras, they do not emit a heat signature that would trigger the MAW system in the helicopter, meaning that the chance of flares being activated by a smartphone on the ground are basically zero. And let's remember that all aircraft, when operating over populated areas, are under the obligation to meet aviation regulations, which forbid flight at low altitudes.

    They fly over waterways and coastal areas, as they provide a naturally occurring path free of terrain, and almost never have structures like power lines or transmission towers. You’d be surprised how often accidents with power lines and other structures occur, especially when they are skinny, have a framework structure, or reflect sunlight at the same brightness as the surrounding terrain, as these can be difficult to see at high speed and when focusing on other tasks simultaneously.
    Also it’s can be safer to land in water if there is a mechanical failure, unless you forgot to pack your floaties and kickboard.
