- Before there was Samurai Pizza Cats, there was Kyatto Ninden Teyandee, which literally translates to Cat Ninja Legend. It was a 90s anime that aired for fifty-four episodes, starting from February 1990 to February 1991.
Following its success in Japan, Saban Entertainment picked up the rights to the series which went on to get its North American adaptation. And thus, Samurai Pizza Cats was born. With fifty episodes under its belt, the series aired in the United Kingdom and Canada in 1991 but reached the United States in 1996.
The original show reveled in its Japanese pop culture references, humor, puns, and its fourth-wall breaking. However, a proper Japanese-to-English translation did not work out for the show due to several reasons which resulted in Samurai Pizza Cats being different when it came to the dialogues while having a very similar premise, story, and narrative style.
In today’s video, we will go over the similarities and the differences as we talk about what makes Samurai Pizza Cats so special.

That's why the 90s always will be the Golden age of cartoons
For sure!!! They not hittn lik dat anymore lol
That and the early and mid 2000s
The 80's had it's fair share of great cartoons!
@@carlosnievas1220 yep
@@carlosnievas1220 That's right.
I love the 90s, have Italian heritage, was born the same year this show was released, I love cats, love pizza, love cartoons, love action, love comedy….
Yet here I am, 32 years old…
AND I’VE JUST DISCOVERED THIS SHOW FOR THE FIRST TIME???
I remember watching this with my brother, after every episode we’d go outside and beat the crap out of each other with sticks pretending to be these guys. A few years back I found the blu ray of the whole series and lent it to my brother, his kids love it now too!
Speedy's name is double pun. It's funny you missed obvious one. His name can be read as "Speedy Service" but written as Cerviche
90's anime at it's goofiest.
This anime was my 1st introduction to 4th wall breaking more than a decade before I knew it meant. Great show !!!
Even the german dub was wild, and even then the writing team still tried to do their own thing, which I still think was the right decision, which made this series something unique to this day.
Made my time at sixth grade a lot better than it was. Still loved the humor and the craziness of it all.
Loved Samurai Pizza Cats. Silly, yet fun show in the 90s.
Samurai Pizza Cats are My Personal Favorite And Heathcliff and The Catillac Cats
My Three Favorite Characters Are Speedy Ceviche, Polly Esther and Guido Anchovy
I hope there’ll be a redub and a reboot of samurai pizza cats on Nickelodeon! I can imagine Tom Kenny voicing both speedy and big cheese, and Tara strong should voice Polly ester, I think Erica Schroeder who voices Bianca in Pokémon black and white should voice Lucile ram.
Think I would appreciate a remaster a whole lot more than trusting modern script writers and directors to reboot anything these days.
@@Peter2k84THANK YOU!!!!!
Samurai pizza cats was on ch 11, wpix, the WB, in NY. From 2001 till 2007. I enjoyed it. The puns, the humor, etc. The episode, "blown up with people", was fun!
Actually, I saw that on Channel 11 in NY as well. It only aired from 1996 to 1997, five days a week.
So, in Arizona in the 90's there was very little anime broadcast in america. Dragon Ball Z could be found but nobody knew what you were talking about. SPC was one of the shows that aired that I followed before Robotech changed my life. They changed the time slot of the show to very early morning from its regularly scheduled slot. I was like "no problem, I'll just stay up all night and catch it at 5 am!" I was stone asleep and only woke up to the ending credits being played. All that work for nothing. I loved it but it didn't get a decent chance. Admittedly there was a lot of recycled animation but the dub was absolutely brilliant. I still love the name Bad Bird. I highly doubt there's enough demand for a movie. It was a funny cultural touchstone for its time but the appeal isn't enduring enough to justify a film. But hey, if one is made and it's good I'll watch/buy it. I'll never forget it for igniting my love of the japanese perspective of story telling that far outstripped the brain drain american cartoons half-heartedly churned out to sell cheap merchandise.
if you think about it visually...its a cat ronin warrior lol
I remember watching this show on tv back in the 90's my favorite character was the blue armored dog
One of my favorite shows when I was a kid!
It's SO 90's anime! Like, 90% of the show is 4 frames repeating over and over with a scrolling background! I love it :D
Yall so clutch for this one!!! I remember watching this show when broke my elbow and I was in the hospital, this was all I watched
Talk about being in luck on that one
@@damianprock1650 I agree, and I'm 34 now and remember it like it was yesterday
@@dmorman88 who wouldn't?
The theme song is my ringtone. It always puts me in a good mood 😆
legendary tv show.... lol glad they showed it here in the netherlands
They need to bring back samurai pizza cats.
Holy shit ! I remember this before heading of to school !
This, big bad beetleborgs and, Biker mice from mars need a reboot or something
One of my teenage year cartoons~
The Same With Me
And I’ve Seen It online When I Was Ten Years Old
My favorite show as a kid. Used to come on ytv in Ontario!
And Alberta
One of my favorites.
I always loved Samurai Pizza Cats Since I almost Knew the anime when I was about 6 but saw the Pizza Cats Website when I was 10 in 2001.
Release history:
1996 syndicated
Dates of syndication:
9/9/96-9/12/97
I still watch today :)
Weird Big Cheese looks like a fox and is in the Japanese version, but a rat in the USA version...while still looking like a fox. I remember missing an episode back in 97 because I had school and the vcr plug fell out of the outlet so it didn't record. I was so angry that day. I need to look that episode up and watch it. It was the second part of an episode after Bad Bird had badly beaten Speedy and knocked him into a tree.
Am I the only one who thinks this series could’ve easily aired on [adult swim] in 2010?
Redubs can work, but this doesn’t need a redub.
Awesome video
I hoping for a dub by Viz Media that is faithful to the original Kyatto Ninden Teyandee script.
Considering how disckotek media currently has the blu ray and dvd rights I don’t think we’ll get it soon but they did release a separate blu ray of the Japanese version separate from the English blu ray
If they ever do make a movie, it would be better if they made it anime, instead of 3D and live action.
You forgot to mention that this show is owned by Disney. Which explains why none of the characters appeared in the Tatsunoko vs. Capcom game.
Tatsunoko Got The Rights Back English and Original Dub preferably english dub watch the Toy Galaxy video
I love this fucking show. I used to watch it on sick days from school.
Also, most of it is on CZcams
Yeah, I dunno. A good portion of the IP is owned by Tatsunoko and its shareholders, so what happens next depends on their good graces. Still, I'd love to see some merchandise. Maybe some plushies from Symbiote Studios.
I’ve been always a Fan Of Samurai Pizza Cats along with Heathcliff
My Favorite Things Parts Of The Series Are The White, Red And Blue Armored Cats Speedy Cerviche, Polly Esther and Guido Anchovy
Wow. Did not expect this. Good times.
Me and my cousins use to watch this in the morning b4 we would go to school
They’re my favorite
the video game for the NES (only for Japan's famicom) it's also one of the finest 8bit games ever made.
in the japanese version, the dialogues have a lot of lessons about justice, friendship, and even an acid and funny critic to modern establishment in Japan (depicted by the Emperor being silly and goofy).
I'd love a Samurai Pizza Cats/Kyatto Ninden Teyandee! movie.
I'd rather have it fully animated like "The Super Mario Bros. Movie". Just my opinion.
Wait this WASN'T a fever dream?
I remember this!
The Big Cheese is obviously a fox, the ears and tail are dead giveaways. Making him a rat was just lazy.
To make us all eat pizza
I would loved to see the reboot but this time I want Zanka (Bad Max) to be the main villain.
Brigadier Mango Yaks!
Woooooooow! Your idea for “rebooting” Samurai Pizza Cats is the exact formula out of touch Hollywood executives use to reboot anything. It’s why people hate reboots. Never reboot anything please.
Shoutout to the #pizzacats IRC channel from back in the day.
Man dis shit sound raw af lol 👌🏾
It's funny that the series was a hit in Japan, but the American one was a failure. It's like a reverse Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs.
A great show.
I love it
It great
I thought big cheese was a chick, in one episode he had bad bird chasing this girl because she caught big cheese dressing up like a woman
so sad a character like big cheese will never work these days! He is such a useless but really funny villian.

Why hasn't any billionairre built a giant mecha robot yet? Like if I was a billionaire I would build a giant mecha robot. Fuck boring shit like sports teams and newspapers and giant yachts. GIANT MECHA ROBOTS
Why are you plagiarizing youtube channel Toy Galaxy videos? Seems strange that you're taking an intrested in 80/90s kids cartoon shows now. I thought this was a horror channel?
FTLOG, a TMNT/Samurai Pizza Cats crossover should be made in heaven
