    Starts at 01:47
    1. Def a different style in disco rock
    2. The harmonies and hooks are good in this song
    3. I like this song but I think it's on the overrated side

I appreciate you sharing your honest opinion. I do think you will find the day where you are going about your day, humming or whatever and 🎶"Tragedy"🎶 just pops out of your mouth and the music/beat follows it to the next 🎶"Tragedy"🎶 😀. Thanks again for the reaction. Please do check out the link to the Making of Tragedy. It's only 5 minutes or so.

SHF was a great album, but Main Course album will always be my favorite. That being said I can tell you that when Tragedy came out it definitely wasn’t overrated, but for me didn’t hold a candle to Fanny or Jive Talkin, for example.

I'm glad you decided to listen to the STUDIO TRACK, which is how I think all reactions should be done. I SALUTE YOU! You are the only person I've heard get it right. The fact that they're just insanely talented songwriters with 1 hundred songs that they wrote for themselves as well as other artists being in the top 10 and their diversity is why their music has lasted over 7 decades. Their brother Andy Gibb was an amazing singer songwriter as well. He died too soon in 1988 at the age of 30. Mo died in 2003 and Robin in 2012. They are by far the most talented musical family in the history of music. RIP Andy, Mo and Robin.

I am so glad you mellowed towards this song and that you like it. I love it but then I was there in 1979 when it first came out and was played and parodied continually in the media. As regards its No.1 status, I think some of their disco hey-ho and public good-will carried forward to this song....BUT I do think it deserves its No.1 status on the charts of 1979. For me this is solid gold 1970s Bee Gees - it gets me in the gut!. Anyway - glad u enjoyed. Hope u get round to reacting to Living Eyes soon.

I think context is something that I will always lack in these reactions. I wasn't alive during that time so I can never have a good feel of consumer sentiment. The one thing I have that older individuals won't have is objectivity so I can compare a hit with a non hit song and base my opinions on my personal opinion without bias.
Now at the same time I have unreal expectations for every song I listen to for them so I think that skews my opinion on things alll the time.

The best standards with which to judge a song - in my humble and personal opinion - is what it does to you and to others. That is a heart thing first and then a cranial thing. Music is a personal thing but when a group has sold more than 200 million units, then that is cause for cranial consideration.

The live performance you listened to previously was a one night only performance because Barry was in tremendous pain for a back issue that didn't allow him to hit those high notes. The Bee Gees were deliberately moving away from disco on "Sprits Having Flown", but the use of falsetto throughout kind of lumps this song and the others on the album as disco. You really can't dance to Tragedy as easy as "Night Fever" or "Stayin' Alive". "Tragedy" has such a strong chorus that keeps coming back to one word, Tragedy. Very powerful song. The beat actually sounds more like The Beatles' "Get Back" than anything disco. The downbeat lyrics are in direct opposition to the happier, upbeat lyrics of "Night Fever" or "More Than A Woman", so this doesn't have that happy feel, but still a great song.

    Why was it Number 1?
In 1979 the Bee Gees were coming off the success of Saturday Night Fever where just about everything they did was gold. They were the biggest act in the world for that brief time. They were on FIRE. So naturally their follow up to SNF was eagerly awaited. They had 3 number 1 singles in the US from the Spirits album based mostly on them being so HOT and with the right songs at the right time.
Regarding ‘Tragedy,’ it’s a better record than it is a song. Its very thin, but a great & catchy production nonetheless.
