Depending in what source you believe, ukranians said in their propaganda they slaughter the VDV while the Russians said they held the airport for about 30 hours until reinforcements arrived, for me the truth is between these, i believe they were expelled but stayed stoic in the area and eventually recaptured the airport and well, that's one a hell of combat maneuver so cheer's to them.
ukraine lied a shit ton during the civil war against the DPR as well.. and with that conflict i saw enough combat footage from both sides to know who was lying and when.. i remember them claiming they had control of the donetsk airport when the rebels held it..

@@tomaszkietyka2325 No, the Ukrainians claimed to have "completely driven off" the Russians about 7 times, but that was not the case. They had been driven off of parts of the airport, but consolidated and held out in the end.

Even despite that the US killed several hundred thousand taliban and a few thousand Al'Quida insurgents, to only a few thousand KIA for themselves over the coarse of a 20 year long war.
Russia by contrast, by all accounts apears to have lost more men, officers, generals, tanks, aircraft and artillery in 3 weeks of fighting in Ukraine than the US did during the entier 20 Afghan war.

What's all this stuff about the VDV being 'destroyed' and dying? I keep on googling to find info on this, but every time I look, it all just sources back to the highly untrustworthy Ukrainian National Guard?

Yeah, they landed at hostomel airport, secured it for a while, then retreated when the fighting got a little heavy to get reinforced with tank units that had arrived from Chrnobyl and recaptured it in like a day.
So it wasn't a "wave" of paratroopers getting massacred, which is why no bodies are being shown from that Hostomel battle, but instead a bit of wise tactical movement to acheive a broader strategic goal.
VDV retreated when cornered but spetsnaz joined them and they took the hostomel airport.
