Ace, agreed fully about the "article." This is in no way meant to disparage fan websites, but it's what happens when fans write, pretending to be professionals who know the team. I used to have AATJ bookmarked but don't anymore because there are too many times you get knee-jerk reactions. Keep doing what you do - and never hesitate to call out what you see as BS.
@KevinCanessaJr I mean, c'mon. I don't aim to knock people's articles/videos or whatever....but that was over the line IMO. Totally absurd and uncalled for. But in today's technological day and age, everyone can have a platform (whether it is a video or article) and think that their views are important/need to be heard. It is what it is. I am one of these people using technology to share their views, but I try to be fair. Appreciate you watching!
As for Parise, I can never forget what he did. He was the captain of a team that went to the Final, and he left a few weeks later. After saying he wanted to stay. I don't care about the family stuff, the geography nonsense - show some damn loyalty like Kenny Daneyko. I still feel the same about Bruce Driver for leaving almost as much as Parise. Going to the Garden and not being there to get a ring? Same goes for Holik. And Gomez (as good as your interview was with him.) And I am sure a few others I am not recalling.
@KevinCanessaJr I used to think like this too. At the time I was furious. However, they are just humans like the rest of us. This is their job. It sucks, but it is an unfortunate part of the business. If it was confirmed the Devils offered him like $5M less overall over the course of the contract...I would be coming with pitchforks too. But I do not believe we ever found out what the Devils offered him. It is a tough spot, but I understand both sides of it. (players and fans)

The good news about the MacDermid signing is that it is definitely NOT an analytics signing. LOL. Glad someone is looking at the games and making decisions.
@michaels7134 Exactly. It gives me a sliver of hope. I think the Analytics team decided to fight other battles. It wasn't worth their time to go to war for a $1.15M AAV signing, especially when the entire team seems to love the dude. I am afraid of what they may get in the way of come July 1.

1. Would love to have Zach back.
2. Kurtis McDermid is a good signing.
The one thing no one has talked about: he was one of only a few Devils with a + in the + - category. I think he was a plus 5.
3. I leaned toward the former Edmonton coach, being he was dumped early, arguably not given enough time. But when you alluded to him being addicted to data I changed my vote to O’keefe (who did come within one goal of the second round against a tough Bruins team).
4. I love it when you trash the analytics, data; plays over players type crowd. I need you on the Kansas City Royals site. I always argue - their main problem has been things numbers can’t measure: grit, character, and locker room presence.
@robertlamkin6464 I think Zach would be an ideal bottom 6 for this team, and provide genuine leadership to the young group. MacDermid was a NECESSARY signing. Glad to see he will be here for a few seasons. Anyone who is Analytics obsessed will NOT be my choice. Analytics got us into the mess we are currently in. I do not know how this happened so quickly. It seems Analytics are being over emphasized in all of sports. It is a shame. If it is so easy to make decisions based on "the data", why do teams even have GM's anymore?!?
With a team as pitifully soft as the Devils are, I can’t for the life of me understand how anyone would be upset about MacDermid being brought back. Hockey is not all about speed and skill. Watch the playoffs and it becomes painfully obvious how much this roster, as currently constructed, cannot compete in a playoff style environment. I’m glad he’s back and he seems to be a good dude as well.

These playoffs have been absolutely brutal. Time for Fitz to go get some wartime players on 7/1 when Free Agency begins!
@@runninwiththedevils I’m not sure if it’s because the younger fans grew up with a tamer league, but every single year, the postseason looks and feels more like the league that some of us grew up with. It’s a war - plain and simple. That may be why toughness gets dismissed but it’s a horrible take to think that it doesn’t matter. This is hockey. You’re beating that drum for Brady and I’m right there with you. This team desperately needs more character and grit.
@stanley62495 That has to be part of it. It seems as though most guys/teams play at like 70% throughout the long grind of the 82 game regular season. Once playoffs roll around, everyone ratchets the play up and goes to 110%. WAR EVERY SINGLE NIGHT! How can you watch these playoff games and not IMMEDIATELY realize that the Devils roster as constructed is NOT built for this?!? Brady would be an absolute dream come true. I hope Ottawa misses the playoffs this season under Travis Green, and Brady demands out next summer.

AATJ is my go to for Devils conversations, but the article you referenced about MacDermid was written by one of their lead writers/admins and he is adamantly anti violence in hockey. But the conversation on that site is top notch, if heavily policed.

The only reason Rempe knocked out Seigenthalyer is because he KNEW MacDermid was going to kick his ass...so he took a cheap shot he know would get him ejected. You are right, mental state is a huge factor. My fiancé even said "this team is VERY easily mind fucked." Whoever wrote this article is a complete moron, and has never played a sport in their life. I played roller hockey as an adolescent. I also developed late....so I was short. There were a couple games where I got pummeled. It was demoralizing...and it can be contagious. The coach saw this, and paired me up with someone bigger. I definitely felt safer, thats for sure. lol I agree though, we do need more gritty players #BringBradytoNJ

On the new coach what do you think about Sergei Brylin. When he got put in the ring of honor people were talking about how as a player and coach he works hard and was always ready
@nickross656 I do not know if he would even want the job, but if he did, I would definitely give him a shot. I think there is something to be said for guys who were part of a winning culture for as long as Sergei was. ESPECIALLY because it was all here with the Devils organization.
That article really does sound like a psyop from a covert Rangers fan cause he's mad we got a Rempe response. MacDermid isn't the end all be all to toughness, but he's certainly a step in the right direction, and deserves more than a cashier's salary that some people think he deserves.
Maybe being a young fan and hearing this story I cant hate on Parise. Idk if I'd want him on the bottom six but I definitely wish him a happy retirement

Speed is easily countered by positioning! Jacque Lemaire used it to beat teams who came in with speed that we couldn’t match… so analytics isn’t helping us by choosing fast, skilled players who by the way haven’t wine anything….

I LOVED you calling him out! All my coaches are gone. Unless Fitzy could possibly pull a rabbit out of a hat, then I'm not sure who we should get as a coach.

Ace, Parise coming back for a year at league minimum, would go a long way to easing some of the bitterness many felt at his sneaking away in the middle of the night, so many years ago. Brind'Amour and Berube are gone....this doesn't bode well for an important off-season, it seems Fitz can't make up his mind and players and coaches slip through our fingers.
@michaels7134 It would be an amazing thing to see. But I do think Zach is really done now. If I was Fitz I would certainly try to lure him here for a year though. As far as Berube goes, it is quite possible that Fitz officially offered him the job and he passed. We will likely never know. I am curious to see how this all unfolds from here...

Just wondering why its taking so long to make a decision on a coach. It tells me our GM isn't running the show. Apparently the available coaches aren't on his list, or they would have signed someone or is that too logical? @@runninwiththedevils All About the Jersey used to have a podcast and he was on it with another guy. I listened because it was definitely better than MOST fan productions you'd get from our team...wasn't like it was Facebook fan or HF Board level takes and we're not a major hockey market. It was mostly the other guy, and not John, carrying the show. John has always had some off the wall opinions and is generally just an unlikable ass. For example, he pronounces player names wrong constantly and when people would correct him he'd just double down; essentially sticking his middle finger up. He has been calling Jesper Bratt "Brot" for 6 or 7 years. Why would anyone take his opinion serious when he can't even bother to pronounce the player names correctly? AFAIK he pretty much is like this whenever he is challenged. There is a reason the podcast was shut down.
@LouieNJ Interesting. Name pronunciation drives me crazy. I try my best to get it right. Some are pretty damn hard. I even asked Akira Schmid in person at the end of last season for clarity. He kept getting called "Schmeed" by everyone and I needed to know what the correct way was. Where was this podcast, and how does one get "shut down"?!?
@@runninwiththedevils It is less about how he gets the names wrong and more about his defiance to even trying to get it right. He is a baby. As far as I understand AATJ is backed by a bigger media group and they cut the podcast from the official site(I could be wrong). John runs AATJ, he is the site admin, and he tends to push a lot of people away with his tyrant antics. Anyway, the podcast used to be called "The Garden State of Hockey Podcast" and it was on Spotify and Apple etc. It is still around if you search but it looks like they tried to pull it from Spotify. I can send you links if you got a way to contact you. I have been doing some research since I made my comment and it looks like they have continued to do the podcast under a new name with the last episode being just after the outdoor game against Philadelphia. It is now called "FFSN Devils: A New Jersey Devils Podcast" and I found it on Apple Podcasts.

Regarding Macdermid, he is at best your #6 defenseman and you better have someone who can skate and puck handle paired with him or that pairing is getting no ice time in 3rd period of close games. Facts are facts, he is a fighter who will only play limited games in the current NHL. As much as we both hate analytics, they aren't going away, and this was at best, an unnecessary signing. Would rather have the chippy forwards you talked about that will play and contribute every game.
@walterramirez4443 I'd assume MacDermid will continued to be used as a forward. This signing does not prevent the team from going out and getting other guys that will make us an overall tougher team.

Out of the two, it looks like Keefe has that over Woodcroft.

In my opinion, that was absolutely the WRONG way to voice your displeasure with a signing. Kurtis is clearly loved by the boys, and I am glad to see him make New Jersey home for the next few years.

The player who plays 4 minutes in a random game is worth just as much. When Dallas have Benn, Dadonov and Seguin playing on the 4th line and you want Macdermid it just questions your mental state. And all others who are ecstatic with this signing
@sst6601 The $ is irrelevant to the other moves. If we fail to sign the guys we need, it will NOT be because of this move. Not every team is going to be constructed the same way. You have said how soft the team is for awhile as well. This is a small step in the right direction...

Last summer we lost speed and grit in Wood. This year we lost speed and grit in McLeod. This is what the team needs. Get the fu..k this type of players and D-men sign first. And a goalie for that matter. Devils won't have enough dollar to get this all done. And yeah, the Devils have Mercer. And TF gives 1.15M to an AHLer before everything else. Gime me a break! @sst6601 What does the order in which they happen matter?!? THIS DEAL IS NOT GOING TO PREVENT US FROM MAKING OTHERS. Depsite how hard you try to paint that picture, it is NOT reality. It is just an irrelevant point you keep trying to make. If we fail to get the guys we need, it will be because Fitz failed. This MacDermid signing will NOT be the reason. I am sure the timing was more of a courtesy to Kurtis, so that he knows his future and can start getting settled in New Jersey ASAP. I am happy with this 1 deal. I will judge Fitz for what happens on July 1. That is when the real roster reconstruction needs to happen.
