What Paul Katz demonstrates is how each finger needs to find its balance. It’s a critical skill and is why I teach beginners right from the start, to slide the thumb to a new place when changing finger. I’d like to start a movement to stop teachers putting 3 or 4 tapes on fingerboards to show first position. I believe that that visual and tactile stimulus, promotes a blocked and tense hand. In schools where the cello is taught in groups, rather than one on one, I have found that the most you need is a first finger and fourth finger tape. And if you can succeed with only one tape all the better!
