    20 years ago there were much more old houses, whole neighbourhood from Europa PC to Žalgirio g. was untouched.
    Most common scheme or public secret:
    1. Big construction company wants to build something there, asks owners to sell their house them.
    2. Owner refuses because he knows he is sitting on a gold mine, value of his house increasing every day.
    3. Then "accidentally" house catches a fire and burns down.
    4. Owners don't have where to live anymore so they has no other option than sell the land for minimum price. If the land wasn't private then owner left with nothing.
    5. Imidiately new business centre or apartment building grows up.

    Recently I visited Vilnius. I was exactly at the place you pointed out. I stayed at Calvary hotel (since it is pet friendly) and my walks with a dog were amazing. On the other side of the street in one old wooden building there was sauna, electric engine repair place and tombstones shop. And as far as I got as more impressed I was. It was so strange to see this much contrast in one place.

    There was an episode about Šnipiškės in "Daiktų istorijos". More and more people consider it a cultural heritage that must be preserved. It would be such a beautiful neighbourhood if the houses were renovated. I hope in the future it will become a second Žvėrynas. Though it's difficult to do since the current residents aren't exactly... people of culture... And I fear they will make the run down houses even more run down. I just hope it will be salvagable.

      @ligametis Před 8 měsíci +4

      I think it is too late to save Šnipiškės. And while poor residents is one of the problems, I wouldn't call it as a main one. More problematic is that investors buy these houses and just wait till they fall apart or accidentally catch fire. Also a lot of them are municipality social housing and city just wants to get rid of them, transfer them to developers so never restore them.

      It should be ruined completely as soon as possible, except, maybe, some more exceptional houses. Because it's just a mess as it is.

    • @ligametis
      @ligametis Před 8 měsíci +2

      @@manometras the mess makes it in some way more authentic and idyllic. I am really mad that some people want to destroy one of the most historical districts in Vilnius that have survived wars and soviet period that destroyed so much of the old city

    Old owners of those wooden houses(who own land bellow) are millionaires "on paper" without means to refurbish those old houses..
    Ten or more years ago shady things were going on in Shnipishkes - houses were burned down and owners"urged" to sell property...

    I don't know if Lithuanians find their neighborhoods interesting, but I find Antakalnis really cool with forest, bunkers, and historic building all crammed between the river and the hill.
    I also think Lazdynai is the coolest Soviet style neighborhood.

    I do find Šnipiškės quite charming in places. Taking a walk among those wooden huts makes me feel like I'm in a small village in some remote part of Lithuania. Transformation has been underway over the past few years which made Šnipiškės one of the most in demand areas to move to. All in all I consider Šnipiškės to be one of the best areas to live in Vilnius which is mainly to do with location i.e. proximity to the city centre and other important areas. Also, excellent for cycling with pretty decent bicycle infrastructure. There are still lots of issues in Šnipiškės (lack of bars and pubs, for one) and some things were not done as they could have when building things from scratch, but overall I'm very happy to live here. I'm also very happy that I moved here before it got so expensive :D

    I was in beautiful Vilnius last month. I did walk on the main street of the business district but forgot to visit old Snipiskes, it would've been interesting to see the contrast of old and new in person. A slightly similar neighbourhood with wooden houses I did visit was Zverynas to the west of the city centre which was pretty and in a nice location Next to the park.

    I think this old neighbourhood should have a preservation order in place and the developers must donate funds to the residents to allow them to renovate and preserve their historical homes.
    I love seeing the old folks growing and making things to sell on the street outside of the shops and Malls❤

    there is property tax" Every year, Municipal Councils establish a specific tax rate for real estate situated in their territory. The value of immovable property owned or acquired by an individual exceeding EUR 150,000 is subject to real estate tax."

  • @Jack_Dab
    @Jack_Dab Před 8 měsíci +1

    They are actually trying to impliment a property tax in parliament right now.
    Individual elderships can choose what the property tax is and it would range up to 4%.

    Did you know that Šnipiškės is called “Šanchajus”? (I think u will understand that). There are many more examples like Naujoji Vilnia is called “Vilejka”, “Fabijoniškės” everything on back of the PC BIG called “Skruzdelynas” (salomejos neries g.), and the most insane “call out” is Naujamiestis = “Partizankė” or most used “Krasnūcha”, half of Antakalnis called “New York” because of the student baracks (not sure), Santariškės some locals calls “Santa City”, other hoods have shortcuts like -“ Pašilai, Pilai, Jara, Justai, Koralai, Lazdai etc”. The funniest Šeškinė - “Šeškai” (check the meaning). + Nobody calls Senamiestis (Old Town)- locals just calls “Centras”.
    I highly recommend you to make a video about that. As a information source you can absolutely use your partner. It will be your most successful video ever because many lithuanians know those “Slangs” but dont have a clue where these places are. Keep it goin bro! Fabai all in♥️!
    *There are many more rajonas as a place “slangs”. Many of them came from soviet era, and almost all have meaning . Ofc you need some research to do :)

    Many locals including me found these houses ugly and makes shame for the city looks. Although imagine you live in a house where you've born and you are forced to move away just because somebody builded new buildings around and your house doesn't meet the style with them. People are more important than urbanisation. There are a lot of empty land around Vilnius for business centres. Goverment should invest money in this neighbourhood, make roads, sidewalks, renew houses etc, keep it as historical tourist attraction. Instead they are keeping it as ugly as possible like a ghetto, so less people complain while companies occupy this land. Unfortunately corruption is still a common thing in LT.
