    I am new to the Koi hobby and have recently built a new 3000 gallon pond with 6 koi in at the moment, they where introduced in mid august 2019. My filter is a nexus 220 with extra K1 added in the outer bio chamber and a superfish 12,000 litre water pump and also airation to the nexus and gravity fed bottom drain. I've used a lot of evolution aqua pond bombs to help kick start the filter and to establish it. The K1 in the bio chamber is still quiet a light colour. I was feeding my fish 2-3 times a day upto November and now feed twice a day. I also have a Air source heat pump on the pond and maintain a constant temper6of 14.5c My Ammonia started to rise in october but the Nitrite was clear with no reading. However the Ammonia has now started to reduce almost back to where it should be but the Nitrite has now spiked to a high level. I've been advised to keep a hose on the pond with a trickle continuously and clean the nexus every other day, but your advise and method seems to contradict this advise and so I'm a bit confused with what action to take to remedy the situation. Can you advise or help further please.
    Thanks Andy

      I would let te temperature lower till 11.5 or even a bit lower . Between 12 and 17 is a dangerous temperature. When the temp is that low you can stop feeding them and the nitrite will also go down . The bacteria will be with more numbers when in spring the temperature is getting higher.
      And than if you follow the instructions in this film it will go well!
      Greetings Stefan

    I just found your channel. This late bit of advice is to add Folic Acid supplement tablets into the pond water as it goes into the filter. I had a 10000 gallon/40000L pond that I would put a dozen or so tablets every day for about ten days. Folic acid is very cheap and works wonders. Add every time that you work on filters, clean ponds, etc. The good bacteria eat the folic acid and makes them stronger, reproduce faster, and they will continue to function much later into the cold months. Plus the filter will recover faster in the Spring when your season begins again.

    Really helpful content sir.
    I have a query regarding the filtering part. I have a biofloc culture but some fish don't eat flock, so that leads to excess sludge in tank.
    So I have decided to put up a filter which will remove the solid mass constantly but that won't remove the ammonia, so will the biofloc bacteria contain the ammonia.
    Can you give a suggestion in brief how to deal with it.
    Regards,
    Hardik

    Thanks for this video. I have problem with nitrite. I'm growing denitrification bacteria in a 1000 liter pond of sea water using ammonium hydroxide to feed the bacteria (no fish in there). I put also starter bacteria in that pond. After about 20 days, ammonia declined to zero and nitrite was very high. The nitrite is still very high until now (30 days). Aerator runs 12 hours every day. What's wrong so that the nitrite does not decline? Thanks in advance.

    Interesting take on feeding 24 hours a day. I have never heard that before. I believe the problem though for most koi keepers (hobbyists, not retailers like yourself) would be finding an auto feeder capable of that many multiple feedings and at a reasonable cost. Any thoughts in that regard would be appreciated.

    • @MikeZak101
      @MikeZak101 Před 3 lety +3

      As explained in the video, contact time with the media improves water quality, not allowing the water to mix with the media in the filter for a long enough period results in higher readings of ammonia and nitrite as you are just pumping polluted water back to the pond.
      Feeding consistently without long periods of no food going in (8 hours plus) will keep a consistent safe level of ammonia in the water which the bacteria in the filter need to survive keeping the biological side of your filter strong and working at its best, which in turn will result in a healthy low safe level of ammonia and nitrite.

    Hi, can you help please. Ph6.5 ammonia 0.5 nitrite 0.5 and Nitrate 10.0 what can I do, the pond is 5000ltr and I have a koi multibay filter system so it goes into a whirlpool then into brushed and jap mat and then into k1 media, the pump is 9000ltr pH pump. I've done water changes etc but my readings are not changing.

    • @KoiTVjapan
      @KoiTVjapan  Před 2 lety +1

      If possible (depends on the tap water PH) raise the ph to 7.2, dont worry about the ammonia level when the ph is under 7.4 .
      if you can try to lower the flow of the pump to 4000 liter per hour. than check the nitrite after two days. Nitrate is low so that's ok .
      Please keep us posted about the results.

      @@KoiTVjapan thank you for the reply, I'm not sure I can slow the pump rate down, is it a must because if so I will buy a smaller pump, also yesterday I managed to raise pH to 7 and now my ammonia is either at 0.2 or close to 0.0... nitrite looked to be 0.25, I will check all the levels again in the morning and report back. Am I right in thinking that the beneficial bacteria cannot grow if the pH is below 7 and that's why my ammonia and nitrite was high, PH always seems to be low here so I'm going to have to keep a close eye on that because the filter system I have should be able to cope with the waste load but it's just like I'm not getting enough bacteria doing the job, also I added 2 air stones to the k1 bay of the filter.? Was that a good idea to do or should I remove them.? Honestly I appreciate your help and knowledge so thank you again.
