Sam Harris is a liar and he’s demonstrated that he would be an enormous risk to democracy if he ever got into power by admitting he would lie about someone if he personally deemed them an “existential threat” But he deems every view contrary to his own dogma of hard determinism an “existential threat” which includes all religious expression apart from his own watered down version of Buddhism of course !!
Furthermore, he doesn’t even think that he exists as he’s apparently an “illusion” of an “illusion”. Sam Harris is in no way comparable to the genius of the fathers of psychology such as Dostoyevsky. Hard determinism has got to be the most self refuting low IQ argument in the book!!
Atheists, that is fatalists and epistemological nihilists know that the conscious agent/freewill, that is rationality itself points to something metaphysical outside of this physically deterministic universe. Better for them to deny metaphysics, that is better for them to deny Truth and value/freewill/moral accountability, that is better for them to deny rationality itself than admit the SOUL/SELF/AGENT CAUSATION!!
Once again, the strictly reductive materialist, atheist or philosophical naturalist manifests the very DOGMATISM of which he accuses those who believe in agent causation and in rationalizing it is willing to contemplate absurdities of which no religious believer has ever dreamed!!
Sorry but it’s highly probable that physical determinism, that is the claim that the conscious agent/freewill is “ILLUSORY” is nothing more than a convenient comfort blanket, an ideology that materialists such as Sam Harris have created to safeguard their atheistic ideology because he is indeed clearly lying to himself to say that he can’t take the credit for the verbose coming out of his CAKE HOLE because apparently he has no free will and no choice in his decisions?
You are indeed clearly lying to yourself to say that child rapists and child murderers are not evil and depraved because they had no freewill and choice in their actions. You are indeed lying to claim that child rapists and child murderers are not responsible or accountable for their own actions because they had no choice in the matter!!
Yeah makes great “sense” and perfectly “sane” and not dangerous to society at all? And Harris has the nerve to straw man and mock other people’s beliefs!!
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. What can be claimed without evidence can be dismissed without evidence so the atheist, nihilistic mantra goes!!

Dude, I am seriously thinking of downloading every one of these talks for posterity. Plus, like Aliens II, the second time you listen to them is better than the first. The sequels are booming. He ask questions, while probing, are not intrusive to his guests. A lot of interviewers think they are being cleaver by making their subject squirm, but when they make their guest squirm, they also make their audience cringe - and squirm.

I've heard Harris referenced as a great mind several times, and with this, I finally found an open subject, long-form conversation to listen to. I am here with an open mind, so I earnestly would like to know what you (or anyone else) meant or why this is "the most important conversations."
The hour spent on free will was of particular disappointment. Lex starts off summarizing Harris' take on free will, does not get to asking Harris a question before Harris goes on for ~9mins on a needless verbose expansion on said summary. When Lex is permitted a chance to ask his question re free will, which he gets halfway into before Harris interrupts again for another monologue. This repeats the entire free will "discussion", possibly the entire conversation. At least until UFOs (Nearly 3 hours in), which is where I has enough and left.
tl;dr Harris spent the hours confounding each concept brought up. The hallmark of a great mind is the ability to explain complex concepts in simple terms. It's like the difference between listening to Russel Brand versus Richard Feynman explain an idea. What is the merit of Sam Harris and why do I hear references to him that hold him in high regard - has he changed as a speaker over time?

Which is why, despite hating Sam's stance on free will, I keep coming back to Sam's podcast.
I also wonder if there's some degree of pain inside Sam and Lex. From my own experience, guys like these tend not to be very popular and to struggle socially. I say this because I think they're like me, and I struggle socially. I might be wrong of course, but I sense a sort of pain inside the both of them. When Sam talks about freewill, and how he literally can't experience it, I believe that It is not an instantaneous experience so much as it is an intentional, gradual, culmination of decisions made that compile into either a stronger will or a weaker one. I have had times in my life where I just give in to my impulses. If I'm hungry I pull off and get the fast food that I'm craving. I'll start doing something that I know is unhealthy for me and it leads to more and more. If I start to discipline myself, one decision at a time, change back to a healthy drive and use willpower, I end up making a lot better decisions overall - for long periods of time. I've come to know freewill more as a trajectory than a split decision. I still make a lot of bad choices, but through my life I have pushed out good behaviors and tried to shut out and turn off, as often as I can, bad ones, and it has paid off. I can easily see how easy it would be to follow a different path, had I not had the circumstances I have. I also have known that poor health can cause a downward spiral. Behind personal willpower that yields to what I call freewill, is good health, a mostly pain-free body, and good people around you. All of those things can throw our game. The other thing I've noticed is that when I start speeding out of control with life and thoughts I feel like I get impulsive and I'm not as able to choose to be the person I want to be. When I slow down and calm down, when it's possible, I feel more able to control my behavior. Maybe it is more like conditioning yourself than having a different outlook that gives you 100% freewill all the time. There are choices that I don't want, so I'm not putting them in the spectrum. I'm building myself to be the person I want to be, now and when I die.

Determinism doesn’t say that you don’t make decisions or have intentions. It’s simply an acknowledgment that these decisions and intentions don’t emerge out of nothing. They emerge as a confluence of billions of factors that you could never account for. Every thought you’ve had was made by a brain that emerged from evolutionary processes that you are not responsible for and they take place in a language that you didn’t create. You certainly make decisions and you ought to consciously create your life but it would be false to say that any part of that emerges in a vacuum or from nothing. They all came from something and contribute to what is yet to come. It’s a grand system of which we are just one part.

Lex: How was the weather today?
Sam: The weather is cloudy and cold. The temperature is 5 degrees Celsius, and the humidity is 87%. There is a 40% chance of rain in the next hour. You might wonder why this is the case. Why is it not sunny and warm? Why is it not snowing and freezing? Why is it not stormy and windy? The answer is not simple. It depends on many factors, such as the position of the sun, the movement of the air masses, the distribution of the land and water, the presence of clouds and dust, and the influence of human activity. All these factors interact in complex ways to produce the weather we experience.
But what does this mean for us? How should we respond to the weather? Should we accept it as it is, or should we try to change it? Should we be grateful for it, or should we complain about it? Should we adapt to it, or should we resist it? These are not easy questions to answer. They require us to examine our values, our beliefs, our goals, and our emotions. They require us to make sense of the weather.
The weather is also a source of wonder and awe. Think about the beauty and complexity of a snowflake, or the power and majesty of a thunderstorm, or the tranquility and harmony of a sunny day. These are experiences that can inspire us, humble us, or fill us with gratitude. The weather is not just something that happens to us, it is something that we participate in. We are part of the weather, and the weather is part of us.
So the next time you look at the sky, don't just see clouds or rain or sun. See the marvel of existence, the mystery of perception, and the opportunity for wisdom. And remember that you are not separate from the weather, you are the weather. Thank you for listening.

This level of understanding regarding free will is probably deeper than most people will ever think of to understand it. I assume to most people it's just about the fact that you can reflect upon your experiences and have the ability to choose diffrently if you happen to find yourself in a similar situation - you are not bound to repeat a mistake like a mindless machine. But yeah, on closer examination there's no freedom in that, it's just an emerging result of countless factors that are in play with each other.

The wholesale acceptance of nerd culture and all its variants, as something more like humanity we had forgotten exists in everyone to some degree. I remember despairing to my husband in my little early 20's, my teacher when it came to debate and logic, etc. Just crying silly blubber tears because I thought no one would ever think empirically and that we would all suffer forever. At around 30 minutes, talking about dreaming, and how dreaming allows or enables us to be in totally unrealistic situations, and yet not be surprised, is very interesting. Sam then goes on to say that this experience is very ephemeral and obviously invented by our brains and that we seem to lose the ability to see how bizarre it is, being in such a situation.
Having recently had cataract surgery, both eyes, and now emerging into a conscious world where everything has gone visually from 'standard definition' or worse, to 4K or better, I now realise how my world has ever so gradually been restricting and removing me visually from reality over decades.
The experience for me in this 'New World' is almost shocking, surprising, and at times overwhelming, even though I not only expected it but looked forward to it. The sensory deprivation I had been experiencing (until the last few years when I became painfully aware of it) was so profound that I had become quite withdrawn, depressed and sensing the limits imposed by mortality, that the idea of suicide did not seem too ridiculous, despite having no intention at all to apply it.
As one ages and the senses all deteriorate at the same time, one is confronted more and more with the awareness of consciousness as the last bastion of awareness, of being human. As you retreat more and more into a 'cocoon' of your body's own making due to the gradual shutdown of the senses, and having to rely more and more on the support of others, you are confronted increasingly with the reality that this fundamental 'awareness', 'concsciousness' or whatever it is, is all you truly possess. The loss of even that eventually seems to become acceptable.
Meanwhile, I'm blown away by my new 4K world, and enjoying, like a little kid, every moment of it!

Zow ! Well said, indeed, thanks for that. As a kid watching my grandparents age, I supposed that "old age" was a means of making death not seem like such a bad thing. Supposedly Freud imagined dreams were made as a means of permitting our minds to sleep, which some on youtube argue proof is bearing out. Being a child (made of rubber) is an awesome experience, which passes "too quickly" even if most kids are keen to be "older." While our bodies may experience much in the world, doesn't it all necessarily pass through "consciousness" before it has any meaning for ourselves ? Consciousness is an awesome gift, though I too often forget to appreciate it. As Sam suggested, it would be possible to be in consciously in awe of a cup on a table in the present moment. Thank you for sharing your "gift of new eyes!" B-) A favorite type of youtube video is color blind folks getting "color blind glasses" ... though I don't think they always work, there are many where an adult is moved to tears looking at a sunset saying "no way... that's what you see ? ! ?" Dude, that's what you see now too ! (and I'm one of those adults moved to tears and being reminded how AWESOME it is to be able to see .... and in color too ! " There's an old "radio lab" episode where a woman (author) describes her encounter in a sign language class with a man in his mid 20s who was deaf. With time and patience she breaks through to him and helps him discover LANGUAGE (Oh ? humans have named things ? why didn't someone tell me that decades ago ? ! ? ) Your eyesight story and color blind glasses and an adult discovering language are the kinds of reminders I need to appreciate this moment; that sunset; this cup; and think "what was I complaining about again ? " ... I love appreciating consciousness ... but inevitably my ego crawls back and starts bitching about something and then I'm glad, again, to hear from Sam or you or someone and be reminded to appreciate all that is awesome in this conscious moment ! It's good stuff and it's precious and it's a finite thang. Cheers. B-)

Living in a western world dominated by a culture of individualism, it can feel obvious to internalize your problems and think that they are your responsibility. Accepting Sams view of determinism might really motivate us to see individual emotions as more of a common responsibility and help a lot of people share their emotions and ask for help from their family. @@johnbloom1109 Don't try to explain hard science with arbitrary philosophy and vice versa.
'Consciousness' exists and it has basis in hard science, chemistry and physics, although we cannot explain it yet. The evidence is found in our mutual lived experiences.
And as such it can be explained and, perhaps, understood, at our nervous systems' lowest through to the highest levels of abstraction whatever that may be.
The problem lies in us not being the architects of our own processing units and since we didn't build us we are forced to reverse engineer ourselves.
It's akin to figuring out how a CPU works and what it does without knowing what a CPU/Computer is whilst simultaneously reinventing boolean logic.

letting it write a bit of his own code, and remember the changes will help to. and lastly a cam it can move, a drone to look around if it want and to learn new stuff. and last, you have to create a network of ai's it can talk to about that did go well and about bad chances etc.
a real human mind depends a lot of our combined knowledge, reflection and community. you will need it for a real ai. maybe a human chat works to, a bit but with a lot of downsides.
