  • In this video I answer a couple of questions which you guys have asked, Both deal with the run-up or runway as you Stateside like to call them. The first is about checkmarks and whether or not I think they are of benefit. Basically I’m not in favour of them but do like to use a mark in training for the penultimate step This will help with accuracy and with ensuring the optimum take-off step length. I think checkmarks can be a distraction in competitions. The jumper needs to constantly practise their run-up in training so that the rhythm is learnt and it becomes consistent. In the video you’ll see some of the drills we do to achieve this.
The second question is about whether you should do full run-ups with take-offs/jumps. I think that run-ups with a take-off to the pit is a must-do. I recommend that these are combined with medium to long length run-up jumping across training phases and sessions.
We will therefore do jumps regularly from 12-14 steps in training and as noted regular full run-ups with take-offs. You’ll see various age athletes in the group doing this in the video. This combination will bring the jumper literally up to speed over time so that they will be able to take-off at full/optimum speed in a competition.
If you have any specific questions on run-ups or anything else long and triple jump related then let me know.
