Ayyyy I'm back! And with something for Halloween! Rotpocalypse is an idea I've had for a few months now, because why not have a zombie apocalypse themed AU for Rain World?

I really like the premise of the rot prioritizing spreading to new hosts instead of just consuming everything, it definitely makes it feel a lot scarier. You also did a great job depicting the infected characters, it was quite shocking to see so many beyond just Hunter and 5P!

The Master draws his last spear.
The Suns set for good.
The Hunter has their final fill.
The Harassment becomes too Significant to ignore.
The moon finally disappears from sight.
And it all ends when the Saint anoints the sick.

I love how probably all semi-intelligent cratures like scavs, lisors and scugs “work” toguether. We can see how each one has its problem in its specie, but they would probably work toguether to finish the rot. Its cool to that hunter knows that he is going to become a hll, and leaves the place before infecting moon. Indredible.
this is such a good concept and so well illustrated! I love zombie apocalypses that are just a little more unique in how they behave, like the potential The Rot has to really mutate. The idea that powerful things such as iterators are susceptible to disease is already a good idea that the game does, but making it a monster-making infection that spreads to the wildlife too and causes aggression is also super awesome! I assume Saint is putting everyone out of their misery but can't help but wonder if the Rot afflicted are just stuck in Rubicon instead of ascending, making it a true hell
edit: I'm gonna make this comment super long actually, to mention parts of the animatic that were awesome. Like at 0:51, the idea that Suns was just checking on Pebbles after some incident, only for something to happen to Spearmaster, waiting for their arrival for feedback, turning around and seeing THIS happened to their messenger 🥺and then at 1:11 The Rot is so aggressive that they crawl all the way to another iterator (NSH) just to spread the infection and attack. the whole sequence around 1:33 is so well done! the little goober that Rivulet is just making their way to try and help LTTM, only to be cornered by the very thing that technically started this whole mess, clearly without a mind of his own. and at 1:35 Arti comes in clutch with her grenades (love the Gourmand and I assume Monk being there too, caring about people 🥺)
the shot at 2:08 is also interesting, what happened to Nightcat?! poor guy.... anyway! the fact that Rivulet survived the whole ordeal with Pebbles and maneuvering through the infested land, made it to LTTM, only for her to be infected anyway is so gut wrenching!!! atleast it seemed still had part of her mind intact when Riv made it there. 2:23 The whole Saint ascending sequence is amazing, with the way the afflicted seem to turn away from the ascension targeted at them it seems like it might hurt, but it's probably The Rot just wanting to thrive as much as possible on the remaining planet. one more thing, with the way that Saint walks to LTTM at 2:46, it really seems to parallel Spearmaster at 0:30 well! great job on this animatic!
I love that the Saint’s ascension sequence is very sharp and flashy because it reflects the crosshairs of a gun, shooting rot zombies off
also in the saint ascension sequence you can see gourmand infected too.

nightcat , survivor and monk (?) are seen at 1:16 fighting off spearmaster and hunter . survivor in the end is seen infected so they likely killed them . nightcat probably sustained those injuries from that fight . monk also helps gourmand and arti so maybe seeing nightcat so heavily wounded and their brother being infected made them want to help fight off the rot
Seeing the process unfold. Seeing the completed piece. Probably some of the most gut wrenching watch I've had in a long time. I can say nothing but praise, this really deserves to be in the air.

it'd awesome exploring metropolis as artificer with everything being eerily quiet or something, and there's no trace of any creatures till you reach the house of braids and find that the rot already got to the scavenger chieftain before you did.
and then you have to fight an infected scavenger chieftain :)
and if you die to the chieftain or any other infected creature, it is permadeath.
How cool would it be if each time one of your characters died to the rot or a creature infected by it’d be a permadeath and trigger a cutscene of the character your playing as being overwhelmed by and infected by the rot?
Basically whomever dies and/or survives changes the ending.

Its kinda cathartic that no matter the outcome, no matter what, saint always comes to free the iterators from the cycle. Doesn't matter if there is a rot apocolypse, or if they all collapsed of old age.

Cool how the ending with Saint vs. everyone overtaken by the Rot is just like the cut campaign mentioned a couple of times in the dev commentaries. Before the MSC team decided to put all of their ideas for the Rot into Rivulet's campaign and to make Saint's campaign happen in the far distant future, the Saint was called the Judge and their campaign was all about them stopping the Rot from overtaking the whole world.

Ooooh I like that. It's interesting to think about because of how Saint can never ascend and has probably experienced everything, and everything resets when it tries to ascend. Maybe those resets happen when it completes its task, and then it repeats because the feeling of completing a mission no one else can do is better than what ascension could give it.
Dunno, Saint is interesting to me. I'm a Spearmaster main tho Lol.

Seeing how the rot spread from 5P to suns and then onwards was such cool storytelling that fit so well in the narrative! It was very creepy and I absolutely love how you mainly used greys, whites and blacks to really make the presence of the blue in The Rot pop!
I'll definitely be re-watching this a few times to look back at everything and see what details I missed the first time
The concept of the rot being infectious and turning it into a zombie-like apocalypse is really kinda scary especially when it can also spread to wildlife too

Rain world has some of the most horrifying concepts I’ve seen in a video game. The rot is just so horrifying in concept.
That was legendry, seeing Artficer team up with Gourmond (oh and that other guy) was amazing. The two strongest combat slugcats would be a force to be reconded with and seeing the Slugcat camp was also truly great.
I've watched this on loop for too long so Ima do my best to analyze one specific part: Where 5P corners Riv, right before he attatcks (1:40) because I just love it
1:40 to 1:43 - Really putting the 'bio' in biomechanical here. When yo first meet him during survivors or any campaign before that, he does come off as a higher being (literally floating above you, being able to grant the mark of communication, etc). So to see him do something so natural, so animalistic as breathing heavily, like he's feral? Awesome contrast that also matches with the lyrics of the song.
1:44 - Pebbles has a neutral expression here, you can't really tell if it's the rot or if it's him. His yellow marks changing to blue really drive in that bro's infected, and the one 'X' of an eye... is he literally half dead?
1:45 - He might still be in there. You brought the eyebrow back, as if Pebbles is still conscious, still struggling for control over his whole puppet body. A mix of frustration and fear, hell I could push it and say he's almost concerned for Riv as the bottom of his face literally cracks open. Hey you know what would be messed up? If the rot gave creatures the ability to feel extra pain so the host can prioritize keeping itself alive via fear.
A lil after 1:45 - The eyebrow leaves again,showing the lack of emotions, aka what I think to be Pebbles morals getting forcibly booted out of him. The blue X in his eye shows the rot physically moving in to better control him as the cracks where Pebbles mouth would've been worsen.
1:46 - And congrats, the rot made him snap. Not only did it break the face of his puppet in an almost gruesome mouth (the rot consumes), but the blue 'X' is there front and center. That makes me wonder if it's literal still his eye. The rot is blind, but Pebs can clearly see Rivulet here (or maybe he's attracted to the noises of the mass rarefaction cell). So maybe it was less of kicking Pebbles out and more of needing time to utilize his body, which is why Pebbles didn't immediately try and infect Rivulet here.
Anyways 10/10 scene really enjoyed both the animatic and the video, will continue to watch on loop either for background noise or to spot anything else I can type a mini-essay for.
I do wonder if SOS intended for the pearl to be rot-infected.

This AU is never something I thought I wouldve seen but it is now my favorite thing, I will continue to watch this for several hours longer.

Reminds me how I had tried making an exe out of 5p, yet this AU executes the concept of something changing the course of events and thus the entirety of the Rain World we know being corrupted and twisted into something even more frightening than its original/canon counterpart.
Hell, this AU even does the whole "iterators growing/forming mouths" concept better.
I hope Saint was able to cleanse the world of Rot before ascending..

Oh and the fact that moon isn’t infected at all when rivulet and when saint is not rotten at all is curious.
Edit: we can see that moon is not rotten at all at least when ruffles because pebbies couldn’t send him to the core, and she was the only one who could do that.
Honesty really shocked. Its very rare for anything to make my heart seemingly stop but this is one of this things. Always shocked how despite rain world being really small game with small community it keeps making more quality stuff than many of the way bigger communities.
Also you made my boy saint look good AND *ANYBODY* who does that gets instant respect from me. I hope you will continue make smt like this because its ABSOLUTELY incredible. Literally writing this comment with my arms shacking great job!!!

There’s something kind of cathartic about seeing Artificer working with the other slugcats. Whether she found out the scavs were already handled or decided on her own that looking out for the others was a better use of her time, she broke the cycle of hatred and bloodshed that defines her normally.
Also let’s be real, is anyone shocked it took a zombie apocalypse to get her mind off blowing up monkeys?

I like to think Rivulet was one of the first generation born into the rot outbreak aftermath and thus doesn’t know what life was like before that. All she knows is one day the rot spread out of control and now it’s a fight for survival as the number of survivors slowly dwindles each passing day.

I love the infected designs!
My OC Scug is "The Camouflager" and looks like a dark green Hunter just without the rot, hence the name, he can camouflage alot like a white lizard, he tries to pick off enemies one at a time, he would probably do that to the infected and probably get infected because just camouflaging won't hide your presence from the rot, or he would probably try to protect iterators like chasing wind and beyond because they aren't infected.
I almost cried out of fear, but then everything ended on a peaceful note. It was truly terrifying to watch

Imagine if the Saint campaign was like a sort of bad ending in this au?
Basically all you have to do is let every other playable character get infected leading to Saint literally being the only one left.
It’s pretty much just a kill-I mean ascending spree as you track down each infected character one by one.
The good ending would just be Saint going after Spear, Hunter and the iterators.
More people need to see this! This is amazing!
