The director said it would take 564 years for Kevin to save the money in order to buy that house, aka it's almost impossible for the poor to move up from their class at all, let alone get rich, no matter how hard they work.
Hence why some immigrant parents invest in their kids by giving them the best possible education they can afford to at least elevate their social status in life. Imagine this, a poor farmer had a son who was the 1st person in their family who graduated from university. 30 years later, his son, after becoming a teacher and having lived on a lower-middle-class income, has had his granddaughter become the first person in the family to earn a doctorate. 10 years later, the granddaughter is now one of the top surgeons in the country who marries into a wealthy family. Even if her granddaughter didn't marry into wealth, she'd still be earning top figures from her salary for being a surgeon. Situations like these happen in real life. But it takes one generation to start planting the seeds of toil and hardship for his/her future generations to reap the rewards.
@@Jakeylicious7891 One thing you forgot is that building wealth also means saving money. Let's say you make $300K a year (which puts you near the top 1%) and depending on where you live, after taxes, you can have as little as $140K. If you decide to spend on things like a semi-lavish apartment for $6000 a month, you are left with $68K. And if you decide to eat out or get delivery food every day, that means you are left with around $40K. Then, if you get an expensive car, with insurance, you are looking at around $1000 a month leaving you with $28k. And after you pay for health insurance, you are left with $14,000. Then if you go on vacation and spend $10K on your vacation, you are left with $4K. Then you have all other incidentals or luxuries you may end up buying leaving you hardly anything. This is why most wealth people are frugal with their money. They didn't become wealthy by lavishly spending money on things but sacrificing convenience and luxury by just spending little on what they need to live and eat while treating themselves once in a while and investing the rest.
Jessica, being the most capable in the family, was the most likely to socially progress and lift them from poverty. Notice that she's the only one who had an active role in all of them securing jobs in the household. She's also the only one who didn't replace anybody and even had a job invented for her. The pizza lady said "1 out of 4 are rejects". She's the one who most didn't belong in the sub-basement. She was the most capable of succeeding in life out of them. That's why she died.
I thought it was gitaek, the father, was the one who failed at folding the pizza box. He was the only one who continued to fold it and try hard(He didn't even stared at it, he just automized himself) even when the gas came in to their house. And at the second half of the movie he said "No plan is the plan that never fails." to his son. Which somehow subtly shows that every effort he makes become meaningless.
the fight between the family and ex-maid potraying how low classes people always fight against each other to climb up to higher class rather than being in it together
The smell of the man living in the basement represented poverty so when the guy plugged his nose in disgust it enraged the dad because his family was also poor.
Adding on to what you’re saying, it also means that the family chooses to distance and distinguish themselves and be ignorant of the lower classes. They don’t acknowledge them and don’t care, don’t even see them as human. They only see them as lower, and they choose to do that making them inhumane.
It goes deeper than that. Remember the very beginning of the film. The poor family is trying to leech wifi, and the father is eating. Some crumbs fall to the table. A stinkbug tries to eat some of the crumbs and the father flicks it away. Later, fumigation comes along and the father tells them to leave the window open, it will take care of the bugs. Later, after the poor family has spent the night literally hiding under the table like bugs during the storm, and the poor family's home has been destroyed, the rich wife is celebrating how clean and clear everything is now that the rain has washed away the filth. This puts the poor family in the position of being the bugs fumigated from the rich peoples' homes.
@@Windupchronic it goes deeper than that. The father, in his own mind, had valued his accomplishments. At the beginning, and when his home floods, we see his medal on the wall and how he prides himself in it. He saves it as one of the few items before they leave for the gym shelter. Every time the Parks couldn't stand his smell, he took it personally and brooded in hatred at what he viewed as people looking down at him.
These comments are a blessing! The movie does go deeper than what it seems and when you think you’ve reached the core, there’s more. Parasite is such a masterpiece and even the future generations can add more to its meanings and connect it to their society too.
The saddest part is the end.. Kevin making this elaborate plan to get his father out... but what did his father say about plans? Something always happens...
i think bong joon ho mentioned something along the lines that another tragic/ironic aspect to jessica's death is that she was the most intelligent out of all of them, and the most capable of social climbing. if u remember, kevin says how when jessica was watching tv in the park's lavish bath tub it looked like she belonged there
The fact is, you really can't tell who the real parasite is in this movie. This film has a lot of layers & symbolism with brilliant cinematography. They say this movie is gonna be used in film classes. It's a masterpiece.
@@swastisrivastava4775 That doesnt make sense. Do you know what a parasite is ? A being that lives and feeds off of another being's resources until it's dead. So it's most likely the poor family, they go into the rich house and live off of them until the end.
@@sparrow56able - no friend, he's talking about totally appreciating the FULL artistry on display in this film. There's a LOT going on here and nobody can catch it all in one viewing of this fucked up masterpiece. LOL. I can still watch flicks like Seven, Boogie Nights and I Saw The Devil and see new things.
I’ve been wanting to watch this movie badly for a long time but I absolutely hate horror movies because I have a weak stomach. I can do thrillers but the reviews on this movie say there are lots of intense scenes. So that’s fun
Seriously one of the best movies I have ever seen. There is SOOOO much there and SOOO much you dont notice the first time. The movie is masterfully made. Everything has a meaning. I spent 2 days after I watched the first time thinking about it, constantly going "Oh this part, they foreshadowed it earlier with this part, holy shit". Definitely deserved the Oscar.
So much symbolism for classicism in this movie. The ascending and descending of stairs for certain characters, the living on the hill vs living in a basement, the ram-don with super expensive beef in it...
What I love about this film is how the symbolism is so subtle it wouldn't be noticed the first watch, unlike most other movies where the symbolism/theme is head-bashingly obvious.
The beauty of the movie is Kevin's monologue, "I'll make money," as he puts the stone, a symbol of wealth, down in the river at the end. Shocked black comedy.
Everytime there are scenes where a character crosses a line there are some really great uses of cinematography. The first one I can think of is when Kevin arrives for the first time and the house maid wakes the lady of the house. Her arm literally crosses the line created by the window panes meeting. Nice reaction. Love this movie so much.
I just noticed that the scene of them triumphantly dumping water on the guy who was peeing outside their window came back to bite them in the ass because they got water dumped on them right afterwards
Class warfare isn't simply rich vs poor. The basement couple are poor and are grateful for the trappings and scraps they get from serving the rich (respect) while the Kims fought to keep their setup instead of working it out. The Parks were between oblivious and entitled
Wow Jimmy! Did not know you reacted to Parasite! Easily the best film to come out last year and one of the best to come out in a very, very long time. As someone who has watched the movie three times there is definitely A LOT of rewatch value. The creative ideas that went into this movie are INSANE. I also love the many genre shifts within the film because it just flows together seamlessly (a lot of movies or shows for that matter cannot pull that off). It reminded me of real life honestly.
