The CAGED System: What Most People Are Not Telling You!

  • Hey, friends!
    Happy Saturday to you and I hope you’re all doing great out there.
    Here’s a little insight to some of the less talked about benefits of the famous CAGED system.
    It’s not new and it’s not going anywhere. It’s simply the way the fretboard is laid out on the guitar.
    Hand position and triad voicings are the two main components that I see as the most important.
    Have fun with it all!

    I’m in rural Iowa and picked up the guitar about 30 years ago. In 2021, my dad retired and always had wanted to play guitar. I have taught what I can. He plays every day and loves it - 76 years old. Teaching helped me improve but showed how I need to or can improve. I have decided to start your online course since I play around an hour a day and want to use the time constructively - and your CZcams videos have shown me that you have the combination of fundamentals, knowledge, experience and understanding that makes a great teacher. You are a hell of a guitarist, but you may be an even better teacher - you have the calling to teach. Few can say that but everyone remembers their favorite teacher - it’s a special gift. Looking forward to it!

      Update: I subscribed to your lessons. Although I’ve been playing 30 years and considered myself an intermediate, wanting to learn more chicken pickin’ and bends, the beginner part has me fixing so many obstacles because I needed to see how to fix my technique. It is exciting for playing to come together with proper technique - it’s like finding 4th and 5th gear after thinking 3rd was the highest it could go. Thanks, buddy! Money so well spent - 1000x more valuable than another pedal or gear I could try to sound better!

    I had to stop it half way to add something. I started playing in 1968, with no music training at all. CAGED was my "ah ha" moment! Forget the name caged, and just think chords CAGED. Start with barr G, keep the barr and play the A position and you get a C, that is also the #4 chord in the key of G! Keep that and move up 2 frets, you get a "D", or the #5 position in the key of G! If you go back to the original G barr 3, move that up 2 frets, you get the A, or the #2 position in the key of G. Now you have a box, with G, C, D, A, or the 1, 4, 5, 2 in the key of G. Starting with F baring the 1st fret, that works all the way up the neck! 1, 4, 5, 2 !! When you understand that, you just move the A position, or #4, up 4 frets, make it Am, and you get the relative, or 6m, in the key of G that would be the Em. I also used an exercise consisting of the chords that made 1000's of songs. We even called it the C, Am, F and G. It's just 1, 6m, 4 and 5. Then later the 2 is added in the bridge. When you can play the 1, 6m, 4, 5 (or C, Am, F, G) in the CAGED positions, your well on your way to understanding. That is also knowing little about music, and just using letters and numbers! I think that is part of what GT is trying/showing here, I hope. 8) He is tying scales into those positions, and that is helping me! Some of that I never thought about that way before! I'm no expert, just trying to help friends if I can. Peace --gary

    Thanks for the detail in this CAGED video. One of your best. But a request. You mentioned in a recent video that you are considering setting up to add backing tracks for some of your videos. For me your totally solo playing at the beginning is one of the most special things you gift to us. Few others do (can?) that. It’s not easy to transcribe your solos and study your playing but with a backing track it would be much harder. So, from one of your admirers and fans. What you do now is great. Thanks Guthrie.

Kept hearing a lot of you guys on line talking about going through the chord shapes and using those notes I thought to myself ok let me sit down and figure out what they mean. I haven't gotten deep into it yet but it was coming together making sense and sounding musical, a lot more musical than attempting to pick out a solo from a scale pattern for sure. This is a big help.

    Gee, whizz, Guthrie! That intro sounded like something my hero Andres Segovia might've played!
    I can't wait to find out "what they're not telling me" (about CAGED) lol. 🤪
    👌 👍
    EDIT:
    Around ~14:52 -->
    This is something I figured out, way, way back when I was teaching myself how to play Classical guitar!
    That you could find chords all around wherever your hand position is. In fact, I figured out the CAGED thingy before I'd ever heard of it. I'd literally never heard anyone call it that, but I noticed that I could simply bar those basic, 1st position "cowboy" chords to make any chord along the neck, and that the shapes were related to each other.
    But, I'm still learning about those relationships, and buddy, you showed me some new things---yet again--- today!
    Thanks, GT!
    ... ... ... ... -->
    BTW, I am STILL WAITING for SOMEONE to explain how you get "Uncle Larry" from Tom Bukavac. Anyone? ? ?

    “GT” several times in this lesson you mentioned “a major 7th and a Dominant 7th”
    I’ve heard other instructors say “They’re the same”. What’s the truth?
    Thank you so much! I’m rarely ever jealous or envious of others ; you sir, are an exception to that rule!!

      Thanks a bunch. They are NOT the same at all. The Dom7 is using the flat 7 (in G that would be F) Maj7 is using the 7th degree of the major scale. So F# if in key of G. Think of Mister Sandman for Maj7 and Sky Is Crying for Dom7.

    Essentially the same/only lesson you will ever need which you have been giving for years now, always a pleasure checking back in to your channel when i have the time now i have kids. You really helped me level up a couple years back and set me on the right path to become a better player every day. I will be teaching this to my kids hopefully in a few years time! Cheers Guthrie once again...

    My Uncle taught me to play 35 years ago. He didn't know to call it caged, he say they were mill hill chords. Good stuff Guthrie 👏 👍

    I love the Spanish sounding tones and exotic flavors. Exotic to my ear anyway. You never disappoint by playing things a little outside the box and different from the usual and in the sweetest grooviest ways.

    That’s no longer the Caged system. I would say it’s the Guthrie “Trapp” system. It’s how you trap the right notes under your fret hand at all times! Thanks for posting!
