I know this video is way over a year old, but this was honestly one of the most painful games I've ever watched. Not simply because England played poorly, but because I was in the US during the finals, surrounded by mainly English people rooting for England, whilst the Scottish, Irish and Welsh people I was with were rooting for Iceland. The most awkward thing is that I'm half English and half Icelandic, so my loyalties were so split during this game, so much so that I quietly cheered when Iceland scored the two goals.

I'm not English but I think why most English people expect so much from the team is because of the quality of the premier league where I think only 33% of the players are English. It's stars like Martial, Aguero, Payet, Mahrez, etc that make the league what it is. Only English players that deserved to go to the Euros were Vardy and Kane. I also think this tournament opened the eyes of some of the big boys. Teams like Iceland and Hungary showing they're not there for taking and put up a fight. Great to see

Sturridge isn't a winger yet we play 4-3-3. Why play 4-3-3 when the only winger you take is Sterling? Why not take Townsend who was inform? Why not take Drinkwater over Wilshere? Drinkwater won the fucking league, Wilshere played hardly any fucking games. Pick players over merit, not their reputation. We need a team which is balanced, players playing in their right position, with a game plan and in good form.

We're all disappointed mate. Two points: Stop going on about Iceland's population. It's irrelevant. On the day it's 11 v 11. USA and Russia have massive populations but they don't win footy tournaments do they? Also, nobody should be surprised by this. England have been dismal in tournaments for 50 years - this is not new at all. This is a brand new England squad - and it looked like all the others by playing scared, nervy and slow football. Our players cacked themselves when they went down - and it happens almost every tournament. But we shouldn't be shocked it's Iceland. Iceland were also unbeaten in the qualifiers - and they beat Holland home and away. They were unbeaten in their group games, winning two, and looked much more organised and intelligent than England did in any of their games. We have to stop thinking of these smaller nations as eternally inferior - they're not.
Secondly, please don't advocate for Sherwood - he would be an absolute disaster. England are falling behind tactically and mentally and the last thing we need is another inexperienced ex-player running the show. Managers like Conte and Lagerbach would eat Sherwood alive. In fact, just ignore all the ex-England player pundits like Ferdinand, Shearer, McMannaman, Owen, etc. They are all part of the failed tournament mindset - they are not going to be able to instill a new mindset into a new crop of players. We need something fresh - and someone with tactical nous . Passion only gets you so far - remember Keegan? Sherwoods chest-thumping would get us to exactly the same stage and we'd get knocked out again. We need smart, astute leaders that can react in games - get us playing to our strengths - not more rah-rah backs against the wall bollocks. Technical precision and tactical awareness beats passion every time.

Admittedly, beating Colombia was something I doubt they would have done with Roy's side, but apart from that there hasn't been a serious test. Just look at their loss to the Czech Republic in qualification for 2020. Shows you how they haven't advanced nearly as much as their 4th-place finish in the WC would suggest.
