Bonus Tip: If you think the drain line might be plugged somewhere, save yourself some time and check ALL of the spots where it may plug before putting everything back together.
Bonus Bonus Tip: If the discharge of the pump isn't blocked, check the entirety of the suction line, including the lint trap, the ball valve on the outlet of the exterior washer drum, AND the wash drum outlet itself. After 3 days of trying to diagnose my washer's inability to drain, I found some socks somehow stuck between the interior and exterior drums, plugging up the whole works. Have no idea how they got there, but there they were.

Thank you sooo much for this!!!!! I didn’t even realize our whirlpool HAD a filter, most front loaders filters are accessible from the front kick panel, and since we don’t have a removable lock panel on our whirlpool, just assumed. Had been getting the “F9 01” code for a few weeks and was thinking I needed a new pump, that is, until I found this video! You saved me money and a headache! Thanks again!

My Whirlpool Duet washer was giving a F21 drain error. I took off the back panel as Brad demonstrated, and could see that the water filter on my model is actually at the front, which is even easier to remove (just 3 screws at the bottom). I opened the filter as Brad showed, and saw lots of junk, including a ziploc bag. No wonder it couldn't drain. Cleaned the filter, reassembled, and good to go. Thanks Brad!

Whirlpool Duet Steam with no easy access from the front. This video saved the day except when you said clockwise. That may have been accurate from the back but from the front it is lefty loosy. Since I tightened it first, I ended up have to reach in through the front with the cover pulled out just enough for my arm and an adjustable wrench to fit. We had a noted book disintegrate and the sole of a shoe clogging things up. Thank you for saving me the cost of a repairman. It does smell really bad though.

I have Duet just like this one where you have to remove the entire back panel to get at the "guts". A power drill with a nut driver bit made quick work of the screws and mine also has four nylon clips that need to be slid towards the sides of the washer that hold up the back panel. Inside it was the same with the pump filter facing the left side of the washer just like in the video, but unlike the video when I pulled mine it was pretty much completely clogged with lint, bits of fluff from a pillow that broke in the washer and a beer can tab. I cleaned that out, re-installed it and the washer works fine now. A miracle! The owners manual makes no mention of this drain pump filter in the "Maintenance" section so I had absolutely no idea it was in there so in the half dozen years I've owned mine (including doing lots loads for an Airbnb I used to have) it has NEVER been cleaned. Thanks for posting this video - it saved me real $$$ and now I know!!

Before attempting the "invasive repair" suggested here, why not try unclogging it the lazy way: with water and a backflush. Hold the drain pipe against a faucet in your your laundry sink (or any faucet or hose for that matter). Apply a gentle flow of water to backflush the drain. Hold the faucet and hose together to dislodge the gunk while the water flows in. Let your washer fill for a bit, and then let it drain out with the gunk. If shtuff comes out, you're winning the game. Repeat as necessary until no gunk comes out. Then tell your partner it was a huge job and that you're a hero not giving up and not calling a plumber.

That is cruddy design if you actually have to pull the back panel off to get to the water filter! My old LG front loader had this in a front panel, you just open the outer panel and then unscrew the filter and clean out. It should be done once a month to maintain the unit. No wonder my Duet never drains; I bet the old owners of the house never checked the water filter in 10 years... wow!

Absolutely agreed! After all, these washer/dryer sets are stackable and in fact are displayed that way on showroom floors. Our laundry "room" is actually a short hall by the back door, so short that stacking the washer & dryer was the only option. That makes it impossible to access/remove the back panel (to get to a filter in the back) or lift the washer onto blocks (to facilitate removing the lower front panel if the pump filter is in front).
The engineering is even more needlessly cumbersome for changing the gasket. You're supposed to remove the top panel in order to remove the control panel, dispenser tray and door panel. Again - impossible with a dryer sitting on top of the washer. Anything the owner can repair, replace or maintain themselves should be accessible from the front of the machine, with minimal disassembly required.
Just saying... After considerable time and effort wrangling the gasket to deep clean all the disgusting gunk trapped underneath - ew!

I had no clue you had to do this ! Maybe if it was on the front I would have investigated it. Heck I’m 70 & I’m trying to figure this out. If it’s broke…then I’ll either have to buy a machine that doesn’t match in style or color & I just bought the new dryer like 3 years ago. Pain in the but !!!

Stupidest design ever! Making the filter so inaccessible is a poor design decision by Whirlpool engineers. What were they thinking!?! The Duet stacked washer/dryers came with the condo I bought. The towels always have a funky moldy smell after a couple of days after a wash. I now have to seriously consider buying a new washer/dryer set by another manufacturer because of this stupid filter design. Filter access will be #1 must-have on my future machine buy.
