That is the way my mother and grandmother made the tea but they would add a little more water to it to make it less strong very good

I am a born & raised Southerner. You made strong and very sweet ice tea. I would added 1 cup of sugar or a little less than a cup. I also would have filled the pitcher up to almost the full line. I personally
use family size tea bags. I use cold water & then add the tea bags and when the water boils I cut off the
stovetop and let steep 5-10 minutes depending on how strong you want your tea. I then remove the tea bags. See instructions at the beginning of this comment. Refrig for several hours or overnight. I realize everyone makes their tea different but this is a great way to make tea.

My mom and I always drank hot tea. What she would do is save the tea bags in a glass in the refrigerator and used them to make sweet tea. Of course you need a little more tea bags since they have already been used but the whole idea is a lot of the tannic acid which causes the bitterness is gone and the iced tea comes out phenomenal. thank you for the vid BTW....hearing what a tea lover you are I want to recommend a tea that is the best around. I have tried many different types of black teas, mostly Assam but the one I am stuck on to the point where I will drink nothing else is Lipton Yellow Label loose tea. When you brew it, it has an orange foam on top and brews up really dark. They make Lipton Yellow Label as bagged tea as well if you don't use loose tea. Enjoy!

The only thing I do like you is boil water remove from heat put in your tea bags, but not that many. And let it sit for 15 min. Add 1 cup of sugar to the hot mix. Then add to pitcher and fill it up with water. Couple things my aunt from Oklahoma taught me was never boil tea bags and never pinch the bags into the water because that will make your tea bitter. My tea taste like sun tea every time.

  • @commanderNSO

First off, it has to be Luzianne tea. Nothing else. Luzianne. It's what Southerners drink.
I bring 8 cups of water to a boil, once it's at a rolling boil, I take it off of the heat immediately. I let it sit for 30 seconds to a minute, and place 4 Luzianne family sized tea bags into the water. I let it sit for around 5 minutes, sometimes 6 or 7. I usually pour mine into a gallon jug, which i've already added 1 cup of sugar to ahead of time. I pour the hot tea in slowly, and then share the jug to help dissolve and stir it. I then fill the jug with cold water, and shake some more, and put it in the refrigerator. 4 bags in 8 cups of water for 5 minutes, with 1 cup of sugar is just right for a gallon of tea.

I make my tea also by melting my sugar in the hot tea, but I only use 3/4 cup. I also pour it over ice, about half the pitcher of ice, and finish it with cold water, and always make it in the early morning so it's good and cold. It's sweet, but not too sweet.

Is that a gallon? I use a cup and a third of sugar for a gallon of tea. I was born in Savannah Georgia and have lived in the South my whole life. I've been making tea for over 60 years and love it maybe as much as you do.... your accent does not sound like a southern person so I'm delighted that you like tea made the southern way.

I use Luzianne much better flavor, The way I make it is boil a pan of probably 6 cups water, Take off the heat get a long handled spoon tie tea bags together up at the top right under the paper put in 9 or10 tea bags let steep 5 min(can make tea bitter if l steeped longer)put some water in a pitcher with 3/4 cup sugar stir until dissolved Take tea bags out of pan separate the string and put a long handled spoon through the strings have pitcher handy take the spoon with the bags put on top of pitcher so bags can drip

FYI Never use hot water to cook with, it comes from a nasty hot water tank. There is a lot of sediment in there that don't want to ingest.

With more than 2.5 cups of sugar per gallon, I don't think it's a caffeine high you've experienced. It's a sugar buzz. Dang sure puts the emphasis on "sweet", like liquid candy, heh!
I'm new to making my own sweet tea. But this really seemed like too much, so I made a full gallon with "only" one cup of sugar. It's plenty sweet for my taste and I may reduce that to 3/4ths cup for my next gallon.

I stand by my statement so you get over it. I live in the south and it does not give me superior credentials or credibility as a cook or chef but my skills do.

A pinch of baking soda will illuminate the bitterness in tea. This can be done when sugar is added. Adding a pinch of baking soda also helps to see thru the tea when poured into a glass. A trick most restaurants use. Try it!
