  • I made a colossal mistake re-sealing my Volvo 122 transmission and may have other problems. Even when you try to be as careful as possible, you still might mess up.

17:27. I gasped that at this point, the output shaft fell off the input shaft. A needle bearing/s also likely fell out or became jumbled. Not unrecoverable, but there is a bit of work to recover at this point.

Yep. Going to take it all apart, learn about transmissions, and hopefully get it all back together properly!

On those missing copper washers, usually they are one-time use as once they're tightened that's it. Sometimes called "crush" washers. You can soften them for re-use by heating them to cherry red and letting them cool. Do not quench them in water or oil or they will just become brittle. Let them cool on their own.

Did you notice how much the axle end is bent at 34:25 when you rotate it from the other end or is it just an optical illusion?

Good eye! I’ll have to watch and see. Everything was working properly before I started this, so I don’t “think” anything is bent, but I will check!

Yep! I see it. Likely the 2 parts of the main shaft not lining up, maybe a missing roller or 2. The plan is to pull it all apart over the next few weeks, and get it back together the right way with some new parts. Stay tuned.

Hey man, nice volvo series.. I made the same mistake before..the gears on the m40 are two shafts in parts.. the front rides on roller bearings.. before re installing the gearbox.. run a long magnet into the housing.. check if any of the rollers popped out.. and check the gears shifts on the bench.. sometimes the tiny dog legs on the shifter tends to pop out.. do check out Amazon cars vids.. they help explain in great detail. Keep up the good work.. much respect from Malaysia..

Thank you! I totally forgot the main shaft is in two parts. I’m sure something like that did happen, I’ll have to check it out. I have seen the Amazon Carz videos and they are a big help. I’ll get this together soon.

@@Misunderstoodboygenius Step one for any project on my Amazon is to see if Ron at Amazon Cars has a video on it! I think to acess all of them you have to be a Patreon subscriber but it's totally worth it. I have an M41(overdrive) I'm going to be swapping in soon.

@@moldyapples I had watched his, but I couldn’t find it! Is that what happened? He moved it to Patreon only? I’ll have to go find it.

Where did you find the replacement part on the transmission top/cover? I have looked for one but so far have not found one.

I think you definately should have changed those tranny bearings while at it, next time around you might get old or sick and will not be able to do it again!!!

I did change both bearings. That may not have made it into the video. The rollers internally were not. I’m getting an M41 to replace this one soon.
