    The first time I saw Stu with Satriani back in the day, when Joe introduced Stu, the crowd went "Stuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!" and it sounded like they were booing him. Then Joe said "They Stu him because they love him" and I got it, haha. Then I heard his solo and realized he's on another level. Awesome bassist.

    "I played piano for years and years" at 3:49 well that explains his depth of knowledge. His videos for TrueFire made me a better bassist, got me to know the modes and underlined the fundamentals. This was a casual, cool and excellent interview. Very in-depth. Thanks to all involved.

    Stu's the reason I play bass: 20 years ago couple friends in high school were fans of Satriani. They played his 2000 Live in San Francisco DVD to convince me of how cool and amazing he was. Stu's solo stole the show. I bought a bass a couple weeks later and the rest was (my) history.

    I love the fact that Vikingur Olafsson got a mention! Adapting classical works to guitar/bass/electronics can be a touchy subject but many artists are doing it tastefully and wonderfully. Paul Galbraith has an incredible album of Debussy’s Children’s Corner on 8 string classical guitar (the Brahms guitar), which Stu Hamm also mentioned. Unexpected in this conversation but was happy to see it go this direction.

    • @matthewguzda4075
      @matthewguzda4075 Před 4 lety +1

      I think those things are important. I love history and I think history Is
      Important because it's where we've come from, it's our roots , our heritage. Saying that classical music has an influence on his music's very cool. You'd never think such different music could/would influence each other. But that's the thing about art. Different ppl see the world differently. Obvious I know but it speaks to the character of a person when they take different sources and make a connection between them . 2 of my favorite music groups are hank William's (country star) and the temptations(motown greats) at first they seem very different. Both are distinct icons of their genre. Hank for country ,tempts for soul motown. But despite the cultural differences (and the obvious racial component) both speak of the trials of men and women in every day situations. The loves the loses the extreme joy of life and the misery and unmet expectations. Both have amazing melodies and rhythm. And what I hear in country music like hank William's, is real soul. The temptations and motown in general is described as "soul" music. What some ppl see in country is a lot of cornyness. A lot of hackey topics and ideas which is true in some cases, but with the best artists you see and hear the real talent come thru. Hank had real soul. It was a white person's version but it was undeniably there. Cheers ! I just felt the need to testify. Thanks. Have a great 2020 have fun! Be happy!

    Saw Stu Hamm with Satch in 1996? in Sheffield on the Satriani self titled album tour. Tiny venue. Also the Crystal Planet tour Birmingham NEC when Schenker supported (and had black hair due to his dad's death), and also the Engines Of Creation tour in Birmingham NIA when Stu was using Hartke (sticks in my mind). Surprised the interviewer hadn't seen him before two years ago!
    Stu's Washburn was a pretty bland looking bass and the bright sound of his Kubicki couldn't be replicated. Glad he is with Warwick these days, although his configuration is pretty nonstandard Warwick!
    Really enjoy Stu's playing, hope to see him again one day and finally work out some of the tracks from Outbound as they're impossibly difficult. I think Crystal Planet has the most interesting bass lines on it, and albums since then by Satriani have very pedestrian boring supporting lines with no frills or flourishes.
