  • The Steamship Shieldhall is Britain's largest working steamship. This video introduces her, from her build and working life in the Clyde to her present active retirement based in Southampton.
She has a full program of summer excursions and as an events venue throughout the year, maintained and operated entirely by a dedicated team of volunteers.
This video shows her full story from the very beginning.
You too are welcome to come aboard and say "We are Shieldhall".

I retired being an electrician/operating engineer for a hospital. Our physical plant had a battery of four Waukesha scotch marine fire tube boilers, 150 btu horsepower each. We would run the boilers at about 55 PSI of non superheated steam. I loved working as a high voltage electrician but I particularly enjoyed managing those boilers. That career field served me well through the years. I really miss that job!

I was given a guided tour of the ship about 20years ago. I was in Weymouth on a day trip with my coach, I spotted her and went for a look. The friendly volunteers invited me on board, I was wearing my uniform, maybe that helped!
I thoroughly enjoyed it and met a few of my passengers on board too.
Myself and my passengers were from the West of Scotland so knew about the SS Sheildhall and it's former use.
Maybe one day I will get a sail aboard this wonderful ship.

I'm glad the Shieldhall is still sailing l was on it twice, once when it worked with sooage taking it to Garroch head then as a pleasure boat, it came up from England & spent a few days on the Clyde & l had a great sail on her with others, also it was a sunny day.

Did a sail on Waverley which took us through the sludge off Garroch Head. I felt a bit sick from the smell ! The Shieldhall was replaced by the Dalmuir at that time. I think the dumping of sludge was banned in the late 70s.

Crawling into the boiler tubes reminded me of 6months I spent in Boiler Room #2 on the USS TICONDEROGA which was fired by black oil. When ever we were in Port for a few months as a Fireman we had to crawl inside the fire box to scrape the tubes. I was assigned temporarily to the boiler room because they had a shortage of personal I was a Photographers Mate by my training but at the time I was the new guy in the photo lab so I did what I was ordered no regrets I was young. I have suffered from breathing issues since the. The TICONDEROGA was an Essex class carrier of which 24 were built in WW2. I served on board up until decommissioning in 1973. I was also the last Photographer on board and photographed the Decommissioning Ceremony. By the way the TICONDEROGA had 8 boilers in 4 boiler rooms and General electric Steam Turbines with a published speed of 36knots which is very fast. Proud to have served. I no the attachment one gets after serving on such magnificent ships.

What a lovely machine! Triple expansion engines! Yes, like the Titanic, but she had two triple expansion reciprocating engines for ahead and a high pressure turbine driving the centre line prop for astern motion and maximum ahead speed. Shieldhall is really beautiful and so odd to have modern equipment we take for granted, yet old fashioned oil fired boilers to make steam. Well done to all of Shieldhall's membership and crew.

Being a strictly lake boat, it suffers much less corrosion. A bit like some of the Great Lakes freighters, which can go a century or more (with mechanical refits).

I served my apprenticeship in Barclay Curles & Co, Drydock. The Shieldhall came in for service around 1956o 57.and I worked in the sewage tanks. Redeleaded and immaculate. I always thought it and its sister ship Dalmarnock were called banana boats bcause of the cargo of turds?

Boy watching that bloke crawl into a boiler took me right back to my RCN ERA apprenticeship days of crawling into the muddrum of a Babcock Wilcox boiler on a DDE. Pleasant times they were NOT! They are correct in describing a steamship as a living thing, sorta like a cantankerous grandpa, keep him clean and in fresh chewing baccy and he's your best friend, neglect him and suddenly the Weirs pump fails and you have to help him to the loo to get rid of a surplus of condensate.

Oil fired, you can see them lighting it with a burning rag on the end of a long steel rod, poking it through the peephole to ignite the oil burner jet.
