Pratchett knows how to provide information in such a subtle way. He asks if he is a good grandpa she replies "you have boney knees" which sounds like a complaint but it lets Death know he's been a good enough of a grandfather to have spent enough time with his granddaughter on his lap his boney knees would be enough of a issue to be brought up. He doesn't waste a sentence, everything can be broke open to provide more than what many will ever find.
I just finished reading Mort and one of the things Death says at the end of it is that he doesn't think he'd be a good grandad, that he doesn't have the right knees.
Later in the book this movie is based on, Susan starts having childhood memories of sitting on a comfortable cushion on Death's knee. He changed the past to be a better grandfather.
I think it calls back to her having to sit on his lap during her upbringing; showing that despite his efforts to be an affectionate grandfather, his image and being were unsuited for that role.

I think Death took the phrase 'grandchildren are the reward for not killing your kids' a little too seriously. But this part definitely explains the climax of Mort because I didn't understand why Death suddenly changed his mind.
In the original it was because he saw the love his daughter had for mort and said "buggerit" I'll take the consequences, hence the "bit of emotion" he allowed himself. Kinda rewritten in a good way for this book where it becomes a time of trousers moment where he realises he must have allowed Mort life because she existed.
This exchange reminds me of an episode of Gargoyles where the villains imprison Anubis, Egyptian God of Death. One of them tells Anubis he's only doing it because he wants Anubis to give him back his dead son, who died in a "pointless car crash". Anubis, voiced wonderfully by the late Tony Jay, replied thus: "All death is pointless; THAT is the point. Young and old, rich and poor, good and evil, death comes for them all. It is the ultimate fairness."
Susan is such a great character, her grandfather basically tells her she shouldn't have been born, and her response is sympathy. A little girl in a night dress reminding Death himself of fear.
I love how you can tell that Death isn't actually upset with Mort, he's upset with himself. Death accuses Mort of doing the exact same thing as he did; changing the course of human history by interacting with it and refusing to abide by "The Duty." Death adopted a human child and raised her. He was indeed a loving father but I believe he also understood just how selfish his decisions were when he realized that his daughter was not only mortal, but could live a life he wishes he had. A normal mortal life. Hell that brings back his personalty from Reaper-man. Where he's expelled as the personification of death and he just wants to live a human-ish life. It's almost like the movie Arrival with it's time travel principle. Death knew that he would eventually one day not only lose his daughter to a mortal way of living, but that he would have to be present at her death as well. It's a tragedy that is completely set up by himself, for himself. It's both horrifying and depressing.
The Novel the film this is from is based on brings up the concept that Death remembers everything. Perfect and complete recall of everything. Not just everything that HAS happened. Not just the past. A continuous, unending present, all remembered as clearly as if it happened tomorrow. He spends most of the novel in a funk specifically BECAUSE of this memory, on a mission to forget, which is how Susan ends up playing understudy. However, at the end of it all, we do get a sort of closure around the death of the Duke and Duchess of Sto Helit.
Death brings up a good point. Everyone wants to change the world and reap the benefits, but never willing to accept (or expect) the negative consequences of that change.
Despite the stiff animation, this is actually a pretty great adaptation in sheer spirit ^^ I love how they stage the scene from Mort, and I love Christopher Lee as Death.

And there's nothing wrong with still liking animation that seems on the cheaper side, especially if it comes packaged with other aspects of greater value.
I've never even heard of this series before, and the moment Death started speaking, I immediately knew it was Sir Christopher Lee. Such an iconic regal, classy, bass voice.
They both feel similar, great cosmic forces that can interact with humans in a relatable way but are completely opposite on the spectrum. Discworld is wise and compassionate, albeit prone to anger, that views his purpose as a nessixary balance to the universe and acts as a guide. Castlevania is a cruel and treacherous bastard that devours everything in his path and will destroy the world just to not go hungry, he's also so apathetic to any idea of "cosmic order" and thus he gives no shits.

And I love it even more, there is a lot of my country folk what he took and it warms my heart when it is being told so well (most of it is in feet of clay and Thud) to be precise (360 painting and the Golems) and I think there is so much from all over the world and it makes the stories so much more valuable when you get to know other countries stories.
In that last part, where Susan walks off, you can really tell that Death sees a part of himself in her, and not just physically. The difference is that Susan, in her inexperience, has what Death has lost: the will to change and to cause change in an attempt to make the world better. Both sides make good arguments. Truly, an underrated show.
I didn't get that impression that he saw a part of himself in her, nor that he lost a part of himself and I just finished this book 2 weeks ago... Though they did make him pay in Reaper Man for trying to change things... So I can't say you are wrong on that part.

Fighter jets as well as how the use of the atomic bomb was utilized through by the very variations of their efforts and hard work. Any one with a proper sensible brain in their heads would understand the total gravity and weight of the consequences of their actions. For every great change/benefit that is made, so too will their always be those that will exploit for the wrong reasons and abuse them as well as such equal consequences as there is good. This is something everyone must always understand
I do appreciate the fact that he doesn’t come off as fully in the right though. As Susan points out, his _actual_ reason for not taking action is because the responsibility is “too heavy to bear,” which is just an excuse to be passive.
My favourite line from Death comes from the Hogfather when he tells the Auditors that the problem with living is it's really hard to give it up once you start doing it.

Death from Discworld and The Doctor from Doctor Who have quite a few similarities in character. One of the most notable is that they’re the only ones in their respective settings who both _have_ the ability to steer the course of the universe as they wish, yet understand the _full_ cost of doing so, no matter how “good” the immediate outcome may seem.

There was a saying in another book about why Death does not interfere with mortal matter of life and death. For every one life that Death does not end as he is supposed to 10 more lives must take it's place in order to keep the Cosmos balanced. Only the Divine can interfere without there being any consequences.
Well, we see the consequences of that in Mort when He spares Princess Keli. Then reality begins spring cleaning the paradox. Starting with the weird reality warp that happens in the public house that makes Mort flip his shit.

The animation in this series was never really that good I thought. Except for Death, I think they really nailed his look in this series, he is what I see when I imagine him in the stories.
Honestly, I find *DEATH* too expressive in the cartoon. The skull shifts, which never happened in the book. His all-caps bold font gave gravitas to everything he said, but it was his actions that revealed his warmth more than how he talked. *DEATH* is an unchanging entity; it is only our understanding of him that changes. This is basically how modern theology treats God; poor Terry wanted to believe, but just couldn't. He believed that death was all there was, and perhaps that is why he assigned all the positive aspects of God to the Discworld Reaper. We all want a merciful death, after all.
I started with a hardback trilogy following a young captain Carrot, then darted from book to book in whatever order was available from the library. Amazing magical books of fantasy fiction and facts.
I know there were completely legal region code disabling software DVD's for the Playstation 2, isn't something like that available for conventional DVD players as well?

@dawndusk1007 Yeah, Terry Pratchett is the author. He wrote like 20 odd novels based in the Discworld. He also co wrote Good Omens with Neil Gaiman before his death. If you enjoy these animations. I can not recommend these books enough. They are all on Audible if you want to check them out if you have time to read that many books.

For those who don't know: there is a character in it called the Grand Assassin, he has a definite Skull and Grim Reaper motif and because of his ancient status and occasional kind deeds (as well as a popular fan comic) the fanbase has given him the nickname Gramps.

To my knowledge they made two animated movies (soul music and wyird sisters)
And two live action ones(going postal and hogfather)

@Darkseid, The animation was done by Cosgrove Hall, A British animation studio. The only thing that really sticks out that has been on the air in the U.S is Count Duckula
@@dragonson72 Dangermouse was shown here in the U.S. for a time, on Nickelodeon. I believe Count Duckula was a spinoff series. (At least I remember Duckula being a guest character on DM.)

Death from Discworld and The Doctor from Doctor Who have quite a few similarities in character. One of the most notable is that they’re the only ones in their respective settings who both _have_ the ability to steer the course of the universe as they wish, yet understand the _full_ cost of doing so, no matter how “good” the immediate outcome may seem.
And they both have a granddaughter named Susan.
One of my favourite interactions out of the entire series.

I listen to the audio books as well and I must say that this voice actor for the books is phenomenal! He brings each character to life and gives them their own unique personality. Plus the best thing about the audio books is that I can listen while cleaning or working out at the gym

I remember watching this when I was little with my dad.
There was a saying in another book about why Death does not interfere with mortal matter of life and death. For every one life that Death does not end as he is supposed to 10 more lives must take it's place in order to keep the Cosmos balanced. Only the Divine can interfere without there being any consequences.

He spares Princess Keli. Then reality begins spring cleaning the paradox. Starting with the weird reality warp that happens in the public house that makes Mort flip his shit.

The animation in this series was never really that good I thought. Except for Death, I think they really nailed his look in this series, he is what I see when I imagine him in the stories.
Honestly, I find *DEATH* too expressive in the cartoon. The skull shifts, which never happened in the book. His all-caps bold font gave gravitas to everything he said, but it was his actions that revealed his warmth more than how he talked. *DEATH* is an unchanging entity; it is only our understanding of him that changes. This is basically how modern theology treats God; poor Terry wanted to believe, but just couldn't. He believed that death was all there was, and perhaps that is why he assigned all the positive aspects of God to the Discworld Reaper. We all want a merciful death, after all.
What an interesting series.. I never even heard of this before, now that I have.. I'm gald.

I started with a hardback trilogy following a young captain Carrot, then darted from book to book in whatever order was available from the library. Amazing magical books of fantasy fiction and facts.

I can't stop being surprised at how Death is so fixed on the point how the future cannot be changed by anyone (except for gods if you really push his fixation).

@dawndusk1007 Yeah, Terry Pratchett is the author. He wrote like 20 odd novels based in the Discworld. He also co wrote Good Omens with Neil Gaiman before his death. If you enjoy these animations. I can not recommend these books enough. They are all on Audible if you want to check them out if you have time to read that many books.
