Prematurely Born Sisters (One Speaking and One Nonspeaking)

- Maggie was born weighing 11 ounces at 25 weeks. After being given a 0% chance to survive by medical staff she would eventually go home after 154 days in the NICU. Maggie's twin brother Noah did not survive the difficult pregnancy. Katie, her younger sister, was also born prematurely at 27 weeks and spent 112 days in the NICU. Katie adores everything about her nonspeaking sister Maggie and considers them both to be miracles.

Katie, you are so well-spoken, clever, and empathetic. Well done advocating for your sister.
DITTO!!! Well said!!!!
she's so well spoken, right???
COMMENTS yaaay
I couldn't agree with you all more. You all are so right shes so smart kind and loving
I know right
"I think they should include her since she is a human and deserves to be recognized"
these are VERY mature words, that girl is so well spoken! I bet lots of adults aren't that empathetic as she is!
That statement alone made my eyes well up and made me want to give this girl the biggest hug! She is so mature for her age and it's fantastic! I hope she can educate the people around her about her sister and help them to see we are all one. We are all humans.
Yes I love sbsk
@@leslie2149 she could be simply repeating what she hears from her parents...
That little girl is so mature. A true example
It blows my mind honestly, I haven't heard someone as wise from kids her age, let alone being born so premature.
I really like that Katie is explaining what she thinks Maggie is experiencing instead of speaking for her, it's really sweet that you can see how much she loves and respects her sister.
Katie,
I am a psychologist and I want you to know YOU ARE TOTALLY AMAZING. I have seen so many girls and boys, men and women and I don't know that I have ever seen anyone quite as wise as you are.
The depth of your understanding of life is that of an adult. And, even then few adults have as much understanding about life as you do.
Your love of Mags also something very special. It is almost as if you are an angel in human form.
It was an honor for me to watch you and get to know you if only for a brief time on this video. I love your spirit, you are a remarkable, exceptionally wonderful girl. xoxo
Impressive child!!
You mean "Your (her) love of Mags?" Great post tho. ❤️
@@g.h.7661 then you haven't met many psychologists
@@BethRazz Thanks for the edit!
Your comment made me tear up and I couldn’t have said it better
An amazing family. “I adore people who have differences.” Love this kid.
Same I love that quote
She has a really analytical way of thinking, she mentions probabilities a lot and how random series of events are interconnected to lead to certain outcomes. Her statements are never black and white, she always takes possibilities into account. I hope she looks into a career in mathematics or computer science in the future if she's into that stuff.
Comments are back. The kids are so sweet!
or the kids are back! sweet comments
This man and his work deserves FEDERAL FUNDING!
This is what our world needs!
"I adore people who are different". 🥰
I really love that when Katie talks about how something might make her sister feel, she says “probably.” She’s not speaking directly for her sister, and she doesn’t assume that “because you do this, Maggie will feel this”
“they indulge me” she’s so cute. i don’t know if i’ve ever seen such a poised and wise girl her age. this is a really wonderful family ❤️
Grandma 12:48-13:09. She knows the girl's answers?
@@agnsmnds1905 ....I didn't notice that untill you mentioned it
As an only child I've always asked people what it's like having siblings, but Katie's comment "It makes me feel better knowing someone who's technically the same as me" makes a lot of sense :)
I love the moment at 10:26 where Maggie scrolls to her favourite part of the video, then listens to it and gets excited for a second before quickly browsing for other videos. It really goes to show that even though she's nonverbal, she must still have a rich inner experience that is just more difficult for other people to access.
Good catch! Goes to show she's not just mindlessly scrolling through and clicking, she actually has thoughts and feelings about the content she's watching.
Katie is so spoken!! She provides such an interesting insight
Never thought about the problems of those statements about “how many kids do you have” or “why no boys/girls”, I’ll definitely be more conscious of that and try harder to listen to people who do/do not want to talk about those difficult things!
Yh

It's an even harder question for those who cannot have kids at all, like me. I have a lot of young children in my family and they curiously ask me "Chrissy why don't you have any babies?" I know they can't help it and I can't explain to them why I'm not able to have children, so I just laugh and tell them "because I have all of you guys." It's a hard subject. I try not to ask those types of questions because you never know what someone might be going through.
"How many kids do you have" is not a derisive or upsetting statement in and of itself though. In this case it was hard for her and I get that. But why be afraid to talk to people?

Yesterday I was bummed I couldn't leave a comment, and today I come back and I can! Yay!
The younger sister has SUCH a beautiful mind, she's SO smart and I can tell nothing will hold this girl back :D She loves and supports her sister so much, and she displays better confidence than most people I know :D God bless her and her family, God bless SBSK and God bless everyone here
Yea the not being able to leave comments has been a long battle they have been fighting for like at least a year. I think they just won it. Great job Maggie and Maggie's sister!! You two girls rock!!
@Doza God bless you as well
That child is wise beyond her years. Yay. Also Maggie has amazing cheek bones.
Lol, I was also thinking about how lovely their cheekbones are. Seems kinda shallow considering the rest of the video’s content, but it’s true
I related to this interview so strongly. I was born at 28 weeks weighing 1 lb 9 oz. I also had a twin sister, Nicole, who passed away a few hours after we were born. I can't imagine what my mom went through, having one girl fighting for life and grieving the loss of another. our birthday is hard for her I’m sure. I spend a lot of time wondering how my whole life would be diffent if Nicole was still here. grief never goes away. I miss her every day even though we never got to know each other outside the womb. and the question of how many brothers and sisters do you have? is always difficult to answer cuz neither answer feels like the right one. I lost my sight due to retanopathy of prematurity but I’m glad to be here. I loved listening to Katie be so smart and completely accepting of her sister. I love the way they are together and I’m glad they have each other. and I understand what the parents are going through with the loss of Noah. I’m sure Mags misses her brother, too. thank you for this beautiful interview. I feel a connection to this family.
I appreciate everything that you shared here. I was born 2 months premature and weighed 2 lb and also had a twin. She died at a month and I've also wondered what my life would be like if she had survived. Both of these girls are miracles. ❤️
thanks for sharing Yolanda! they are miracles and we are too! feels good to know I’m not the only one who wonders what it might be like if their twin had survived! our whole lives would be different!!
I am glad maybe you talk to them at some point
@julia mcclean that would be seriously cool!!
Oh man.. My sympathies to you and Nicole.. 😢
I was born at 26 weeks and also spent around 100 days in the hospital. My twin has very similar diagnoses to Maggie (she even looks astonishingly like my sister), and our brother didn't survive birth either. We were also fortunate to be born to a loving and dedicated family. This video really, really resonated with me. I've never seen another person with a story similar to that of myself and my sister. Thank you, Chris.
“Well I guess I need one more [miracle].” Props to the mom for being so strong, losing a child is one of the worst things someone can experience. On an unrelated note, it’s also cool that she’s a teacher and you can tell that her kids are really smart.
The kid is so mature. Empathetic, sensitive, selfless. Nowadays it seems like everyone under 10 has got more emotional maturity than everyone over 10
never thought of it that way before, but very true.
There has been major shifts in parenting philosophy. Many parents these days don't do "baby talk" with their small kids, they talk to them in a normal, open way. They also dont aimlessly read them one picture book after another for story time. They opt for books that invite children to think, explore, understand, and engage with topics like bullying, feeling angry, or how to share but also set boundaries. Many parents finally allow kids not only to have feelings but to express their feelings. There is also a growing understanding of each child being a fully realized individual and not a little presence that must be obedient. There are so many factors that have resulted in kids being self-aware, articulate, perceptive, interested in bigger things like what's happening in the news....they know to be mature and helpful at certain times and they know when they can get away with being a baby. 😂
@@kulsoomahsan4440 This is a great comment, but there's really nothing wrong with "baby talk" early in life. It's a common misconception. In fact, there's strong evidence baby talk supports language acquisition better than exclusively speaking normally to young children. There's even a name for it. Motherese. The high-pitched voice draws the attention of infants and toddlers.
@@AmyJoy6 I totally agree. I was only mentioning current trends without labelling them as right or wrong or better or worse. I love baby talk and think it should still be utilized but many moms these days don't do it. I'm an aunt to 4 little ones and my sis didn't want me using baby talk with them so I stopped (sad face) but my mom (the grandma!) did the baby talk with them. We have adopted some of the kids' cute pronunciations over the years though. :) Ex. one of my nieces used to call chewing gum: chewbattan. And we still call it that to this day even though she doesnt anymore. Her big brother used to call trains "tooggoo" (from choo! choo!). We still call it that sometimes even though he doesnt anymore. And the name the kids have for me is also from what my nephew started called me when he was a toddler and all the 4 kids call me that now instead of any of the traditional words for aunt. :)
There’s something so special about Katie. Her way with words, her kindness and empathy…her mind is amazing. She’s going to do amazing things.
@lisa J thank you! And yes, I am the real Katie from the video.
Katie is an angel on earth. Wise well beyond her years. Compassionate, empathetic, eloquent, and loving. Her family is so blessed to have such a remarkable young lady in their lives
Katie is more well spoken than most of the adults I know
Amen. Such a sweetheart she is. Very wise beyond her years
I love how she said “I adore people who have differences” . Me too
As a fellow NICU graduate, I loved hearing Katie and Maggie’s story!
I was born at 28weeks at 1lb6oz!
Same! I'm a 28 weeker too, 1lb 12oz. I love discovering people who've had similar experiences as me :)
Aye the comments are on. Just wanna say I love you man and you’re a life changer
I agree
Thank for someone who like my comment 👍
Hi lucid ter
Maggie was 11 ounces, wow! She and Katie are truly living miracles. I'm so sorry Noah did not survive. My niece was a preemie too, 1lb. 3oz. She's 13 now and is doing great, smart as a whip.
Katie is such an insightful, wellspoken girl. She's very calm and patient. She values her close relationships above all else. She's on a great path! Mags has such a close connection to mom that is very important. They are a pair that have a bond that is like no other in this world. Such love in this family ❤
"I adore people who have differences."
"I really wish she could talk and explain all her emotions to me."
you have such a beautiful and wise spirit little girl!! ❤️
First of all, I'm so excited that the comments are back on! Second of all, I really admire Katie's perspectives on inclusion, and her quote "she is a human and she deserves to be recognized" really stuck with me. That's just it-recognition! I so often see people 'turning the other way' so-to-speak when given the opportunity to meet and get to know people with disabilities, and that is so disheartening. We're all humans and we all have great things to offer to the world! Thank you Katie for that very intelligent and illuminating thought, and I wish you and Maggie the best!
What a lovely comment.I agree!
Thank you both! I’m the real Katie from the video, and thank you a lot. I was actually very nervous about what to say in the video honestly.
Does anyone else see Maggie and Katie having a great career as a motivational speaking team? Or is it just me?
Katie is such a well-spoken intelligent girl. When she said “I adore people with differences” my heart melted. And “they indulge me” had me cracking up. Such great insight, especially for her age!
What an emotionally intelligent child
What a lovely message of unconditional love: “We’ll figure the rest out. You just need to be here.”
That girl is so awaken and aware of the present, adorable and very smart!
I'm so happy that the comments are back! I never used to comment but I always read through them.
Keep doing these amazing things. Lots of love from the UK 💕
Me too. I don't comment too often, but I love reading them.
I love reading the comments too 🤗You get to see the best of humanity which can be harder and harder to do on the internet ❤️
Such a sweet relationship these sisters have. I think Katie will always be there for Maggie and It's beautiful to see such a bond. What a wise and kind girl Katie is!
Im blown away by how stunning they are. Their bond is adorable!
The way dad lights up when he watches Katie being interviewed about their relationship is just so sweet. What a wonderful family with so much love and support ❤️
I cannot believe the doctor would say that to her after her first miracle baby!!, that is not on at all, doctors need to have compassion, not to give false hope but hope for the best for a mother that has already had one premature baby,, these two girls are absolutely gorgeous and both miracles 💖 I’m so glad they both got to come home with their beautiful Mumma 💖 love hugs and best wishes all the way from Australia 🇦🇺 for an awesome future for both of your gorgeous girls 💖
What a strong mama, what a beautiful family. It’s so wonderful to hear their stories and to see their strength and resilience. Thank you for sharing.
My cousin RJ was born just before 26 weeks. I remember how traumatic it was, and how worried everyone was. He is a true miracle. Today, he is 31 yrs old and was a Marine for 8 yrs, he was fortunate to grow up healthy.
I love Katie's maturity and Maggie's ability to communicate without words. Their parents are very strong - losing a child you wanted might be the worst thing someone can ever go through. I also love how supportive the grandparents are. That is a wonderful family if I ever saw one.
Katie is such a gem. She’s going to go far in life, Maggie has an angel as a sister
“I adore people who have differences” TEARS TEARS TEARS TEARS
What a beautiful pair of sisters.
Katie you are one of the most well spoken kids I have ever heard, the way you can express the love you feel for your family is amazing
“That’s what sisters do” - so we’ll said Katie. Big hugs to mama. You’re doing amazing.
I really appreciate how Katie always says "I *think* Maggie would feel [x] way." It shows how much she respects her by not presuming her emotions.
My step cousin was born at 25 weeks and 1.11lb and spent about 6 months in the hospital. All NICU grads are miracles.
Yay! Comments! 😊 before they go away I just want to admire their courage.
This is so sweet! “I adore people with differences” is a lovely thing to say
idk if it is just me, but at 7:40 she said "he was with my husband when he passed away with my parents and sister." I had to listen to this 3 times before realizing her parents and sister did not pass away! I'm definitely glad that's not the case.
I love this little mama. She's the smartest thing. I could listen to her talk all day.
Wow her perception of the world and insight is amazing, very smart child. Way to go mom!
Here before the comments are off! You're totally awesome!
Katie is such an amazingly intelligent child WOW!
Katie is an absolute sweetheart. I love the way her dad looks at her. Such love in his eyes for his little girl.

I was so blown away by how intelligent, well spoken and kind Katie is. What an amazing friend and sister. And Maggie did amazing in this video very inspiring I’m so happy your comments are back on so we can show our support to this amazing community!!! Also their mom’s strength is amazing I love the fight you have for your children inspirational.
What an amazing, brave and resilient mom. She faced insurmountable pain and pulled through to raise such beautiful daughters. The amount of respect, empathy, and acceptance she has taught them far exceeds what so many people in this world have. Katie will move mountains with that intelligence and pure soul.
I have incompetent cervix. I miscarried twins, my son was born at 28 weeks (hes now 13), my daughter was born at 34 weeks (she is almost 9 now) and my 5 year old was born at 38 weeks he was breech and didn't put as much pressure on my cervix. I went to a specialist with my youngest two after they realized the problems. All 3 spent months in the NICU. Although my youngest was almost full term I had a bone infection while pregnant and because of the medicines they gave me he had hard time at first.
Yes, "miracles can happen" indeed! Katie is wise beyond her years. Also, my heart goes out to the mother and father in this video. They are so strong despite all that they've been through. Keep up the good work! These two young ladies have wonderful parents!!!
Such a wonderful family! Meg is so strong in overcoming so much, Katie is so empathetic and well-spoken, the mom unconditionally loves her kids, the father cares so much, and the grandparents are so supportive! Beautiful people, inside and out ❤️

I was also born prematurely at 27 weeks and I weighed 850 grams (don't know how much that is in ounces). A hard question for me to answer is when people ask do i have any brothers or sisters.
