Yes, it’s been done. The main benefit of the approach probably involves the access to point of sale features you get with Shopify that Squarespace doesn’t currently provide. It’s a bit of a clunky way to get them however - you’d probably be better off just using Shopify by itself if POS is going to be a big part of what you do.
Technically yes - you can use the Shopify 'Buy Button' feature to embed products or product catalogs on a Squarespace site, and use Shopify's POS system rather than Squraespace's. However, you won't get the most out of Shopify this way (particularly if you plan to sell internationally - the 'Buy Button' doesn't facilitate multi-currency transactions yet). And you'd also increase your costs considerably. My gut feeling is that you'd probably be better off using one or other of these platforms rather than trying to crowbar them together.

That’s probably a fair summary - Shopify sites are also very ‘pretty’ but less easy to configure visually. A key thing to consider if selling locally is point of sale features though - the options on this front are considerably better with Shopify.
